10 Ways Remote Workers Can Find Work-Life Balance In 2023

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A recent article in The Atlantic claims that America’s fever of workaholism is finally breaking for the rich, who are buying more free time. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for the average American worker. Now that remote and hybrid work are becoming the new normal, employees face new challenges along with the advantages. Chronic work stress no longer exists solely in the office. In one study , 48% of remote workers said they were struggling to disconnect from work, burning the midnight oil. This trend has led to nearly half of the workforce feeling burned out—conditions detrimental to productivity and job satisfaction. If you work at home, you’re in your personal space, not your usual professional environment, with your personal and professional worlds under one roof. The upside is you have greater flexibility, but the downside is your personal life can bleed into your workday. Laundry needs to be done, dishes … [Read more...] about 10 Ways Remote Workers Can Find Work-Life Balance In 2023

What Makes Economies Strong?

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Over the last year a number of you have pointed out the odd typo or two in my Sunday note. For example, one eagle eyed reader in Brazil registered that I had written ‘South China Sean’ rather than ‘South China Sea’, which is a Freudian slip of sorts. The real reason the quality of the note may have slipped is that this time last year my ‘editor’ Nicholas Benachi, passed away. In addition to being a good friend, he made sure that the logic and quality of the note were up to scratch. One of his favourite greetings and ‘sign-offs’ was ‘Strength and Honour’, which may have been inspired by his love of bushido and his family’s ties to Greece, not to mention a sweeping appreciation of history. It is a phrase that comes to mind more and more often in a world where the moral pendulum is swinging wildly, and I often find myself using it as a maxim to scrutinise people, places and projects. Here are a few examples. Strength … [Read more...] about What Makes Economies Strong?

Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon

October 1, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Not just Bengaluru, many towns and cities across India — Jodhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Silchar, Surat, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Gurugram (above), to name a few — were flooded after spells of intense rain that overwhelmed their poor and choked urban infrastructure. (Image: @ashwinning/Twitter) While there are a host of manmade and natural factors behind the increasing incidence of floods in Indian cities, it is the former that is more to blame, experts have warned, emphasising that the environment must be respected and things set right before it is too late. Unplanned construction in low-lying areas and wetlands, rampant concretisation, choked and overwhelmed storm-water drains, as well as disappearing water bodies and natural water channels are responsible for urban floods, which throw life out of gear in cities every monsoon. A spurt in spells of very heavy rainfall in short durations triggered by erratic weather patterns is a double whammy for already-choked urban infrastructure, … [Read more...] about Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon

What Can Past Technological Revolutions Tell Us About Today?

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While the furor around robots taking our jobs has largely died down in recent years (not least due to the lack of any real evidence that it's happening), it remains inevitable that the introduction of new technologies will cause disruption in the labor market. "Throughout history the introduction of new technologies has had an inevitable impact on the labour market, whether through displacing jobs, creating new ones, or significantly altering those that already exist," Alexander Dick, Executive Chairman of cloud technology firm VeUP says. "Technologies like AI and robotics are not going to be any different and we're already seeing this across the economy at the moment, with some new jobs being created, some being displaced, and many being altered by the introduction of these new technologies." Research from the Kellogg School explores historical periods of technology-driven disruption to see if there are any patterns … [Read more...] about What Can Past Technological Revolutions Tell Us About Today?

Xavi Rules Out Manchester United Signing Ansu Fati From FC Barcelona

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez has ruled out any chance Manchester United might have had of signing Ansu Fati. Reports emerged from Catalonia on Friday claiming that the Premier PINC League giants were interested in buying the former teenager prodigy from his boyhood club. Fati is struggling for form and protaganism in Xavi's talented team which currently tops La Liga, with a decision to opt for a four-man midfield only leaving space for a right winger as either Gavi or Pedri operate as false left wingers. Probed on the rumors ahead of Barca's meeting with Sevilla at Camp Nou on Sunday evening, Xavi Hernandez poured cold water on any remote hopes Barca's opponents in the Europa League in under a fortnight might have had of landing the number '10'. "No, no, no... Things will work out for him," Xavi insisted . "We have to be patient. Ansu is a spectacular asset to the club. We trust him a … [Read more...] about Xavi Rules Out Manchester United Signing Ansu Fati From FC Barcelona

Bayern Munich Lead Seven Clubs Interested In Signing FC Barcelona Star Ansu Fati – Reports

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are the club that has shown the most interest in signing FC Barcelona star Ansu Fati from a total seven European rivals, according to a report. On Friday, it was claimed that Manchester United were interested in acquiring the 20-year-old number '10', who is currently spending more time on the bench than featuring for Xavi Hernandez's La Liga-leading first team. The youngster's plight hasn't gone unnoticed continent-wide according to Mundo Deportivo , however, which says on Saturday that Bayern Munich have registered the most interest in the Guinea-Bissau-born sensation. North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are also said to be keeping their ears to the ground when it comes to Fati, who burst onto the scene as a prodigious 16-year-old in 2019 under Ernesto Valverde. It is now starting to be muttered by many fans that Fati hasn't been the same since that time, when he … [Read more...] about Bayern Munich Lead Seven Clubs Interested In Signing FC Barcelona Star Ansu Fati – Reports

Teachers Need The Why, The What, And The How For Change To Happen

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There’s a dizzying amount of activity going on in some states and school districts, spurred by the push to bring classroom practice in line with the “science of reading.” But not all of that activity translates into better reading instruction. Some teachers are being required to take rigorous courses that ask them to re-examine and abandon deeply held beliefs about how children learn to read. Even if they become convinced that change is needed—that is, they have the why— they may not be equipped to put their new understanding into practice. Other teachers are simply being asked to follow a radically different kind of literacy curriculum. They have the what— the instructional materials. But they may not understand why change is necessary. That could lead them to depart from the new curriculum or implement it in a way that doesn’t work. Even if teachers have both the why and the what , a radical shift in … [Read more...] about Teachers Need The Why, The What, And The How For Change To Happen
