Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Known today as Cycling UK , the organisation is now a charity but it was founded as the Bicycle Touring Club 144 years ago today. The Bicycle Touring Club (BTC) was founded at the North of England Meet of high-wheel riders held on the Stray at Harrogate, Yorkshire, on August 5, 1878. The club was the idea of three young blades: Stanley Cotterell, an English medical student studying in Edinburgh, S. H. Ineson of the Bradford Bicycle Club and T. H. Holding of Banbury in Oxfordshire. Because tricyclists joined the club, it was renamed in 1882 as the Cyclists’ Touring Club, or CTC. The aims of the CTC were to “encourage and facilitate touring in all parts of the world. To protect its members against unprovoked assaults. To provide riding or touring companions.” Ten years after its first meet the CTC’s membership reached 20,000, making it the largest athletic club in the world. And its members were influential. … [Read more...] about Happy Birthday Cycling UK — Fighting For Cyclists Since This Day In 1878

Liz Truss fends off Rishi Sunak attacks to hold her lead in UK race
File image of Liz Truss (Source: Reuters) Marcus Ashworth On the July 25 prime-time BBC television debate between the two candidates to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative party leader and United Kingdom Prime Minister, former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak started very much as the underdog against Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. He certainly came out fighting, but Truss held her ground, and steadily got her points across. Post-game analysis suggests he’ll remain the second choice with the 175,000 or so Tory party members who get to make the selection. Sunak’s hopes rest on whether a reputation for competency can overcome a perceived weakness in radical policy offerings. His popularity, derived from his economy-saving employment-furlough scheme during the pandemic, has been undermined by the cost-of-living crisis that started on his watch. He needed to gamble, but the cautious numbers guy couldn’t find the lever to reverse his fortunes. Truss is successfully … [Read more...] about Liz Truss fends off Rishi Sunak attacks to hold her lead in UK race
How To Buy Better Time
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin All of us think that timing is exact, that it will always be there on our smartphones or watches. But these devices are not foolproof. Electromagnetic storms, foreign interference with satellites, and spoofing and jamming can all disrupt the timing streams sent to our computers and other devices. American Global Positioning System satellite navigation systems provide timing services, in addition to positioning information, through a constellation of satellites. The same GPS system that tells you where you are (using your car navigation system) also tells you the time. Just as interruptions to these satellite signals can affect how you perceive your location, they can also affect how your watch and smartphone tell you the time. Russia and China have demonstrated that they can take down satellites, enabling them to meddle with Americans’ perception of location and time. In July sunspots caused unusually-strong solar … [Read more...] about How To Buy Better Time

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Twenty-two-year old Grammy-nominated artist, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram , known as the defining blues voice of his generation, is on a roll. This article first appeared in City & Country, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on July 25, 2022 - July 31, 2022. - A + A The overseas market — especially the UK and Australia and even Japan — is drawing Malaysian investors. The appetite for international projects is good especially since most international borders have reopened, observed JLL Property Services (M) Sdn Bhd country head Y Y Lau during the session entitled “Investing in Overseas Projects” at The Edge Malaysia RealTalk 2022 forum. Lau was joined in the session by JLL global residential agency senior negotiator Chong Shu Ling. Both explored the complexities, prospects and outlook of foreign investments. “There’s been a pickup in activity … especially with the markets in the UK, Australia, Japan and Portugal recently. Nonetheless, with overseas investments, we believe that investors will have to take on a more median [long-term] approach,” said Lau. “It is important to be clear in your … [Read more...] about Overseas market drawing local investors in endemic phase, says JLL
Inclusivity in the new era of banking
- A + A Shankar Kanabiran, Malaysia financial services consulting leader and partner of Ernst and Young Consulting. KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 4): Digital banking offers its users a wide range of value propositions. The commonly listed benefits are the speed of operations, convenience, and transparency and support. These value propositions apply to both developed and developing countries with the focus on promoting financial inclusion and benefiting end-users. “If value propositions are not tailored to customers whether in a developed or developing country, you are not going to see success. We see [that] digital banking, in both developed and developing countries, is enabling access to credit,” says Shankar Kanabiran, Malaysia financial services consulting leader and partner of Ernst and Young Consulting. “Small and medium enterprises, which are sometimes left out by conventional banks because of stringent credit assessment and policies, are able to gain access to … [Read more...] about Inclusivity in the new era of banking
BOE raises rates by most since 1995, warns of long recession
- A + A (Aug 4): The Bank of England unleashed its biggest interest-rate hike in 27 years as it warned the UK is heading for more than a year of recession under the weight of soaring inflation. The half-point increase to 1.75% on Thursday was backed by eight of the bank’s nine policy makers, who also kept up a pledge to act forcefully again in the future if needed. “The committee will be particularly alert to indications of more persistent inflationary pressures, and will if necessary act forcefully in response,” Governor Andrew Bailey told reporters in London. “All options are on the table for our September meeting, and beyond that.” The pound pared gains dipped after the move, which was accompanied by warning that a UK recession will begin in the fourth quarter and last all the way through next year. That would be the longest slump since the financial crisis, with officials expecting the economy to shrink by around 2.1% in total. The BOE also boosted its … [Read more...] about BOE raises rates by most since 1995, warns of long recession

This article first appeared in City & Country, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on July 25, 2022 - July 31, 2022. - A + A Additional questions from those who attended The Edge Malaysia RealTalk 2022 were sent via email after the event. Here are the responses from the speakers. Anthony Lee 1. I was recently informed by the joint management office that the unit on the 15th floor has a water leak and it is due to water dripping from the common toilet. May I know who is responsible for repairing this sewerage pipe/water leak? In strata properties, water leaks or seepages that emanate from a higher floor that affect the floor below may be termed as an inter-floor leakage. The source of water leakage is usually the bathrooms, toilets, sewerage, water pipes or roofing, resulting in water stains, paint damage, mould or bio-hazardous wastewater. Unfortunately, inter-floor leakage has become a serious and recurring systemic problem in high-rise … [Read more...] about After The Forum
Ben&Ben beyond soaring melodies, crowd-pleasing musicality
Ben&Ben What started out as light rain quickly deteriorated to a heavy downpour as the nine-member pop-rock/folk-pop band Ben&Ben, the Philippines’ most-streamed artist since 2020, was gearing up for its six-song set at The Island in Uptown BGC last July 30. But Paolo and Miguel Guico (lead vocals and acoustic guitar) and their colleagues, Poch Barretto (lead guitar), Jam Villanueva (drums), Agnes Reoma (bass), Andrew de Pano (percussion), Toni Muñoz (percussion, vocals), Keifer Cabugao (violin) and Patricia Lasaten (keyboard), refused to let the gloomy weather rain on their music-making parade. After a slight delay, the group took center stage and brought the house down with a cleverly curated lineup that had the audience singing and grooving along to it in no time. We’ve been monitoring contemporary OPM’s exciting trends for some time now, but the miniconcert was something we looked forward to because it was our first time to see the group strut its stuff in front of … [Read more...] about Ben&Ben beyond soaring melodies, crowd-pleasing musicality
Opinion: Britain is closer than ever to a non-White prime minister. Don’t think it’s racial progress
Kehinde Andrews is professor of Black Studies at Birmingham City University and the author of the book "The New Age of Empire: How Racism and Colonialism Still Rule the World." The opinions in this article belong to the author. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) Britain is as close as it has ever been to being run by a prime minister who is not White. When Boris Johnson eventually skulks out of office, he will be replaced by either Rishi Sunak, son of Indian migrants via East Africa, or Liz Truss who is doing her best Margaret Thatcher impression. Kehinde Andrews There was much fanfare that half of the original eight Conservative candidates were from an ethnic minority, representing far and away the most diverse contest for the next leader of the country ever. But rather than being a signal that we are at a watershed moment in British politics, this whole episode is the perfect example that diversity is often the enemy of … [Read more...] about Opinion: Britain is closer than ever to a non-White prime minister.
