- A + A SYDNEY (May 16): Asian share markets were struggling to sustain even a minor rally on Monday, after shockingly weak data from China underlined the deep damage lockdowns were doing to the world's second-largest economy. China's April retail sales plunged 11.1% on the year, almost twice the drop forecast, while industrial output dropped 2.9% when analysts had looked for a slight increase. The risks had been to the downside, given new bank lending in China hit the lowest in nearly four and half years in April. China's central bank also disappointed those hoping for a rate easing, though Beijing on Sunday did allow a further cut in mortgage loan interest rates for some home buyers. News that Shanghai was relaxing some of its lockdown restrictions offered only cold comfort to investors. Chinese blue chips shed 0.4% in reaction while commodity currencies took a knock led by the Australian dollar, which is often used as a liquid proxy for the yuan. 73 of India’s 100 unicorns have at least one founder from IIT
In his book, The Golden Tap, serial entrepreneur Kashyap Deorah had described how Lee Fixel, a former partner with Tiger Global, used to filter potential startups on the basis of the founders' caste and JEE (advanced) ranks. Only candidates with high JEE (joint entrance examination) ranks make it to India’s premier technical institutes -- the central-government owned Indian Institutes of Technology, commonly known as IITs. “Fixel preferred North Indian Marwari banias with single or double-digit JEE ranks who were young and first-time entrepreneurs. An analysis had probably revealed that such entrepreneurs were the best performers in the companies Tiger liked funding,” Deorah had written. Fixel had led negotiations for funding rounds for Tiger Global in unicorns like Flipkart and Ola, which were among the New York-based hedge fund’s largest bets in India. Both the companies best fit Deorah’s description as Sachin and Binny Bansal, founders of Flipkart, come from IIT Delhi, … [Read more...] about 73 of India’s 100 unicorns have at least one founder from IIT

Shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism: Are Indian family firms prepared?
The governance scores of family firms in the ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) rating, as per Reuters and Sustainalytics data, were found to be lower than those of other firms. (Photo by Akil Mazumder/Pexels) SOUGATA RAY, NUPUR PAVAN BANG & NAVNEET BHATNAGAR The debate whether companies should be governed with the sole objective of maximising shareholder value (shareholder capitalism as reflected in the shareholder primacy model advocated by Prof. Milton Friedman) or balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders (stakeholder capitalism as reflected in stakeholder primacy model advocated by Prof. R. Edward Freeman), including shareholders, has been raging for several decades. Climate disasters, rapidly rising inequalities and COVID-19 have perhaps put to rest the shareholder vs. stakeholder primacy debate and tilted the balance firmly in favour of the latter. Modern corporations, irrespective of ownership, have an obligation to act in the interests of … [Read more...] about Shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism: Are Indian family firms prepared?

Crypto’s Richest Lost Nearly $60 Billion In Recent Weeks In Massive Crypto Collapse
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Fortunes rise and fall in the volatile world of cryptocurrency, but over the last few weeks, they’ve only moved in one direction—down. The total value of all outstanding cryptocurrency tokens is down over 26%, and Bitcoin is down 25% since March 11, when Forbes counted 19 crypto billionaires . Now, just 16 are billionaires, Forbes estimates. For moguls whose net worths are hitched to token prices and publicly traded stocks of crypto firms, it’s been a difficult few weeks. Languedoc In Southern France: Quality Wines Minus The Prestige Means Great Value
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The price of a wine is, to some extent, determined by supply and demand. But supply can be plentiful, and the prices still soar. I don’t have a problem with expensive wines. They are easy to avoid. The challenge for a wine lover lies in finding exceptional wines at a reasonable cost, wines where prestige plays a minor role and it’s all about great flavour and character. There are many of these wines around. But they are harder to find than the super-expensive ones. At the extensive wine fair Wine Paris in February, we met four of our favourites from the Languedoc region in southern France. These four producers are exceptional value for money. Domaine du Nouveau Monde, Languedoc Domaine L’Arbuselle, Faugères Domaine Rouanet Montcelebre, Minervois Domaine des Terres Georges, Minervois (All prices mentioned in the text are for purchases at the estates.)
