Startup founders need every tool at their disposal to successfully launch and grow their businesses. One of those tools is a clear understanding of how the licensing business model can be employed to support their goals , including speed to market and filing intellectual property that is attractive to investors. The concept of licensing has been around for a very long time. The inventor of the first patented technology -- Samuel Hopkins, in 1790, for a new method of manufacturing potash and pearl ash -- licensed it to a local businessman the next year, says historian Arthur Daemmrich at the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. Basically, one party (the inventor or artist) grants another party (typically a company) the right to produce and sell something they created. As far as I can tell, most startup founders aren't very familiar with the concept of licensing a product onto the market. Venturing -- the traditional method of bringing a … [Read more...] about The Benefits of Licensing for Startups.

Go For It: How Success And Risk Go Hand In Hand
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Robert W. Bache (aka "Medicare Bob") is founder and chief of sales for Senior Healthcare Direct , an AmeriLife company. For any successful entrepreneur, risk-taking is a must for true success. When I think about taking risks, I picture myself early on in my career in the insurance industry when I decided to take a chance on a new business venture. My wife was six months pregnant with our second child at the time, and I’d been working as an insurance agent for the last three years, bringing home a steady paycheck. We had stability and the comfort of a familiar routine. The last thing my wife wanted was for me to shake things up. But that’s exactly what I did. I told her I was going to leave my job and open up my own agency. At the time, I knew I’d learned as much as I could at my current job. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I told my wife that if I didn’t take my chance and pursue my passion now, I wasn’t … [Read more...] about Go For It: How Success And Risk Go Hand In Hand
RBI repo announcement: Exporters say banks not passing on benefits of low interest rate to businesses
Representative image While the Reserve Bank of India’s lower interest rate regime is intended at supporting growth for industry facing a liquidity crisis, banks are still not fully transmitting the benefits of the rates to exporters and end-customers at large, exporters say. On April 7, the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee voted to maintain the repo rate at 4 percent and reverse repo rate at 3.35 percent. The RBI has now kept the key interest rate (repo) unchanged for the fifth consecutive meeting. The last time the repo rate was changed was in May 2020, when it was cut from 4.40 per cent to 4 per cent. The Repo Rate is the rate at which commercial banks borrow short-term money from the RBI. The government has kept the repo rate low with the understanding that as a result of the lower cost of securing funds, banks will provide cheaper loans to citizens. Under the Reverse Repo Rate, banks deposit excess funds with the RBI and earn interest for it. However, arguing that the … [Read more...] about RBI repo announcement: Exporters say banks not passing on benefits of low interest rate to businesses
Is The White House Underplaying Inflation Risk? Here’s What The Experts—And Markets—Are Saying
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Biden officials and the Fed insist inflation is no big threat, but investors seem to be bracing themselves anyway. In a pre-recorded interview with The Atlantic’s Future Economy Summit released Tuesday morning, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen indicated that if President Biden’s multi trillion-dollar spending plans are enacted by Congress, “it may be that interest rates will have to rise” to prevent the economy from overheating. It was the most overt acknowledgement to date by a Biden administration or Federal Reserve official that inflationary pressures exacerbated by unprecedented federal stimulus spending and a coming consumer boom might actually harm the economy. Markets dropped briefly following Yellen’s comments. Edward Moya, a senior market analyst at OANDA, a foreign exchange broker, described the remark as a “big oops”—until now, the White House and Federal Reserve have been consistent about careful … [Read more...] about Is The White House Underplaying Inflation Risk? You Don’t Have to Starve Yourself for Days Like Jack Dorsey to Get the Benefits of Fasting
When Jack Dorsey announced on Twitter a while back that he sometimes doesn't eat for days , healthy eating advocates responded with a howl of outrage. But even though Dorsey's routine may be extreme, he's certainly not alone in his fascination with "intermittent fasting." "Eating is so last season" According to its many Silicon Valley backers, fasting isn't just a new trendy take on the good, old diet (or anorexia in disguise). It's a science-backed way to promote increased health and productivity. "Eating is so last season; these days all the cool kids fast," joked Arwa Mahdawi in a UK Guardian article chronicling the newfound obsession with not eating in Silicon Valley "where a number of high-profile tech execs extol the transformative power of extreme fasting." The Atlantic has also covered the tech industry's obsession with the idea. The claims of fasting fans aren't entirely baseless. Years of research have shown that calorie restriction increases … [Read more...] about You Don’t Have to Starve Yourself for Days Like Jack Dorsey to Get the Benefits of Fasting
Film ‘DOSED 2’ Explores Legal Psychedelic Therapy, Highlights The Changing Landscape Of Mental Health Care
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2020, the Canadian government made a landmark judgement that permitted four terminally ill Canadians the legal right to use magic mushrooms for end-of-life distress . The compassionate decree was the first of its kind in Canada since 1974 when magic mushrooms (containing the psychoactive substance psilocybin and known to ease end-of-life fears) were made illegal through the Canadian Drugs and Substances Act. One of those initial four people allowed to experiment with the newly legal mental health treatment using psilocybin was Laurie Brooks, who is also the central character of the documentary DOSED 2: The Trip of a Lifetime . The film follows Brooks, who in 2018 was diagnosed with late-stage terminal cancer and given 6 to 12 months to live, as she makes her way through a journey of acceptance of her own mortality, aided considerably by her psilocybin experiences. Growing up in a devoutly religious family — and … [Read more...] about Film ‘DOSED 2’ Explores Legal Psychedelic Therapy, Highlights The Changing Landscape Of Mental Health Care

Changing mosquito genes, spreading bacteria: Science sees success vs dengue
ILLUSTRATION Ed Lustan ( First of two parts ) MANILA, Philippines—Amid the rise of dengue cases and deaths in many countries worldwide, including the Philippines, scientists are playing God to combat the disease by tinkering with the genetic makeup of mosquitoes and bringing harmless bacteria into the picture. Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus responsible for causing the disease is called dengue virus (DENV)—which has four serotypes. Not all mosquitoes, however, can transmit the virus to humans. GRAPHIC Ed Lustan According to the Department of Health (DOH), dengue infection is caused by DENV from female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti genus. A bite from these mosquitoes can also spread chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Aedes aegypti can be identified by the white and black stripes on their body. These mosquitoes—which usually live and nest in clear water—typically bite between 6:00 to 8:00 AM … [Read more...] about Changing mosquito genes, spreading bacteria: Science sees success vs dengue
