As gender norms shift, ‘women’s brands’ are going after a new demo: men
When designers Monica Zwirner and Lucy Wallace Eustice launched their women’s handbag startup, MZ Wallace, in 2000, they spent a lot of time pondering what they should call their new brand. They considered following the path of many other American designers—Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff—and simply using their own names. But they were worried that approach would make their brand sound overly feminine, something they wanted to avoid. “Neither of us has a particularly feminine sensibility,” Zwirner says. “We think of ourselves first as a design company, and we think really good design isn’t gender-specific. Why I ditched my TV for an old-school projector—and you should too
Ever since I turned 18 and struck out on my own, I’ve lived without a television. Between a lack of space (hello, 400-square-foot casita in Santa Fe), lack of time (looking at you, freelance gigs), and lack of interest (who needs a TV when you have a phone and unlimited data?), it’s been nearly a decade since I’ve felt the need to turn on a regular flatscreen. My solution? Take a cue from elementary school days and invest in an old-school, stowable, pull-down screen and a projector. advertisement advertisement I’ve found it to be a perfect modern, high-quality, fun way to watch my favorite shows, and it seems I’m not the only one. At CES (an annual tech and gadget trade show) in January, several brands debuted … [Read more...] about Why I ditched my TV for an old-school projector—and you should too
Fab Cofounder Bradford Shellhammer Is Launching Design Sales Site Bezar
After a year of soul-searching, Fab cofounder and former creative director Bradford Shellhammer is back in the flash sales game with his forthcoming startup Bezar, an online short-term sales hub for designers who are hand picked by Shellhammer. advertisement advertisement Sound familiar? Shellhammer admits that the site, when it launches this spring, will work a lot like the original Fab, which he quietly left in November 2013. “I’m a firm believer in flash,” he told Fast Company. Although he’s not calling Bezar a flash sales site, but rather a collection of pop-up shops, “because it’s a little different from flash,” Shellhammer said. “This is not excess inventory. It might not even have been made yet when we sell it.” “There is a big difference in my eyes between that and the pop-up shop model,” he added. “Discount is not the driving factor here. It’s about newness, exposure.” Flash, in this … [Read more...] about Fab Cofounder Bradford Shellhammer Is Launching Design Sales Site Bezar
