Ukraine Stories Podcast: NPR Veterans Deliver A Tour De Force Of Narrative Journalism

May 14, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s been almost three months now since Russia invaded Ukraine , and much of the latest news coverage has been depressingly predictable. It feels like every day, foreign correspondents share word of yet another Russian atrocity . Or, of outnumbered Ukrainian defenders still hanging on. Of a new show of defiance from President Zelenskyy. More countries, like the US, sending aid packages and weapons. More fighting, more dying. Journalists tasked with reporting this story certainly want to keep readers and audiences back home invested and caring about what happens. But rather than wrap their arms around the bigness and the battles that are part of this bloody geopolitical conflict roiling part of Europe, a group of NPR veterans decided to focus on the small, and the personal. Instead of covering the war the same way as most everyone else, the journalists launched a podcast in partnership with Spotify to … [Read more...] about Ukraine Stories Podcast: NPR Veterans Deliver A Tour De Force Of Narrative Journalism

2030 – What Does The Future Hold?

May 14, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Last week I did a talk entitled ‘2030’ – a topical title these days given the cloudy outlook and there are already some decent books such as Jim Stavridis’ ‘2034’ that look out that far. Yet, the fallacy of forecasting is to try to imagine discrete events in the future – a better starting point in looking ahead eight years is to go back eight. Russian invasion If we travel back to 2014, the key events were Russia invading Crimea, Britain’s existential political struggle (Scottish independence), an epidemic (Ebola in Africa), pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, an economic crisis in Europe, the election of Modi in India and Iranian nuclear talks. Many of these phenomena are still with us (Modi, Iran), others ‘we’ failed to take seriously as portending more serious developments (Russia, Brexit, Epidemic, HK). In particular, the last four have stress tested globalization and found it wanting each time. If, based on … [Read more...] about 2030 – What Does The Future Hold?

Why corporate America is afraid to talk about abortion

May 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

These days, corporations make public proclamations after just about every significant news event. After George Floyd was murdered, tech companies, including Microsoft and Apple, made pledges of $3.8 billion to diversify their hiring practices and better support Black workers. Airbnb, Google, and others rushed to announce matching donations to support relief efforts when Russia invaded Ukraine this February. And back in 2013, hundreds of companies , among them Starbucks and Facebook (now Meta), urged the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. advertisement advertisement This is part of a series of articles on the business case for abortion access. See the full package here. So why is it that, even amid the mounting pace of state legislation and recent Supreme Court leak , companies have had so little to say about abortion? Starting in March, in anticipation of the Court’s final decision this summer, … [Read more...] about Why corporate America is afraid to talk about abortion

Myanmar resistance urges West to provide arms for fight against junta

May 18, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 18): The defence chief of Myanmar's shadow government has called for international help to arm its resistance forces fighting the ruling military, requesting support similar to that being given to Ukrainians battling invading Russian troops. The people of Ukraine and Myanmar's pro-democracy militias are all fighting for freedom and giving their lives, but those taking on Myanmar's well-equipped army need more than international solidarity, said Yee Mon, the National Unity Government's (NUG) defence minister. "The stance of international community for Myanmar is moral support for us and we are grateful for it. We will be much more appreciative if we get physical support such as arms and funding," he said in handwritten remarks provided to Reuters. "With that support, we will be able to end the revolution sooner, minimising the loss of people and their property." Western allies have been arming fighters in Ukraine to resist Russia's invasion, which … [Read more...] about Myanmar resistance urges West to provide arms for fight against junta
