Editor’s Note: This article is one of the top 10 business lessons of 2015. See the full list here. advertisement advertisement The night it happened, I was at a party filled with potential clients. I saw opportunity everywhere I looked. Then I saw a friend. As we caught up on business and life, others joined us. My friend introduced me as a “marketing freelancer” to the CEO of a company. She smiled politely, cocked her head, and asked if I was an expert at “that Twitter thing.” I explained that I was actually a CMO-for-hire focused on marketing and branding strategy. But after my friend’s introduction, it was clear that prospects now saw me as a low-level social media worker who’d just pile tweets and status updates into their channels. I left feeling undervalued and angry. I vowed never to let anyone introduce me that way again. Looking back years later, I see my friend hadn’t meant me any harm. If anything, it was his own … [Read more...] about Why I Stopped Calling Myself A “Freelancer”

Technical View: Nifty forms bearish candle, may test 50-day SMA if selling pressure continues
The Nifty traded lower throughout the session and closed at one-month low on December 10, dragged down by negative global cues and concerns over fiscal deficit arising out of lower tax collections. The index formed a large bearish candle, which to some extent resembled the marubozu formation. In a perfect marubozu candle, open and high have the same value and so do day's low and close, but on December 10, there was a negligible difference of two points at both ends. The bearish candle indicates selling pressure and maybe hinting at a resumption of downtrend after a brief pause seen a day earlier, which had led to the indecisive doji formation, experts say.Close After opening higher at 11,950.50, the Nifty immediately slipped and extended selling pressure as the day progressed. It touched an intraday low of 11,844.70 in late trade and closed 80.70 points lower at 11,856.80. related news Nifty's earnings for FY21 likely to be in excess of 20%: UTI MF 'This sugar stock could see … [Read more...] about Technical View: Nifty forms bearish candle, may test 50-day SMA if selling pressure continues
The trolls are teaming up—and tech platforms aren’t doing enough to stop them
What do trans women gamers, Jewish journalists, academics of color, and feminist writers have in common? All of them could find themselves targets of coordinated harassment campaigns simply because they have a presence online. advertisement advertisement Take the story of Trista (all names have been changed to protect privacy), a trans woman gamer. When she began streaming her games on Twitch, bands of harassers arrived en masse to jam up her channel with what she called “low effort, hateful memes.” Another woman gamer was called an “eBeggar,” the misogynistic gaming equivalent of “gold diggers.” On 4Chan, where harassers organized their attacks, posters organized “raids” of “SJWs” (or “social justice warriors”) against gamers like Trista, planning to “post many swasticas” [sic] and hurl ableist insults to threaten and belittle them. Or take the story of Keith, a white Jewish man, comedian, … [Read more...] about The trolls are teaming up—and tech platforms aren’t doing enough to stop them
Why Nike Sees Social Responsibility As An Opportunity To Innovate
Environmental protection and equal opportunity are two of today’s most pressing global issues. Nike sustainability head Hannah Jones and soccer star Abby Wambach talk with Fast Company‘s Jill Bernstein about how international corporations and individuals alike can bring meaningful change to the world. advertisement advertisement Fast Company: How did you two become challengers of the status quo? Abby Wambach: The thing that led me into activism is that I am a little different. I’m so lucky for that. I always try to fight for the little guy or the voiceless, because in certain parts of my life I’m the minority, whether because I’m gay or a woman. That’s where any true activism is born—my heartbreaks. Find out what breaks your heart and do whatever you can to fix it. Hannah Jones: When I was 16, I had a white Mohawk and I was a DJ on a pirate radio station that kept getting raided by police. Let’s just say that my parents … [Read more...] about Why Nike Sees Social Responsibility As An Opportunity To Innovate
What it’s like to date and marry out of your social class
Marriage is fast becoming a status symbol. In 2018, fewer people in the U.S. are getting married, but those who do are more likely to be economically privileged. A 2017 research brief found that 56% of middle class and upper class adults are married, but among working class and lower class adults, that number is between 26% and 39%. In 1990, more middle class and upper class adults were married—about 65%—but more than 50% of other adults were married, too. As women earn more, marriages have also grown more equal in terms of pay—which in turn has reinforced social stratification. That’s also because people in the U.S. are increasingly unlikely to date and marry outside of their own social class. advertisement advertisement But what happens when they do? I talked to three people* about what it’s like to be with someone from a different socioeconomic background—and how issues of race, nationality, money, and education permeate their … [Read more...] about What it’s like to date and marry out of your social class
