Photo from Kauswagan LGU CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—A town mayor in Lanao del Norte province has been absolved of responsibility for the alleged forcible eviction almost nine years ago of three families from a 12-hectare coconut estate that is the subject of an ownership dispute. Because of the eviction, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte Mayor Rommel Arnado faced three counts of grave coercion charges, along with two workers of the local government. In two rulings–on April 26, 2019 and on October 14, 2019–the Sandiganbayan found Arnado guilty of the charges and ordered him imprisoned for up to three years and six months for every count of the offense. But in a March 21, 2022 ruling, which was received by the parties only on August 3, the Supreme Court’s Second Division said that contrary to the findings of the Sandiganbayan, there was not enough evidence to convict Arnado. West Virginia’s Other Senator Just Saved Its Coal Industry
Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia may be saving her state’s coal industry after the Senate Democrats’ climate bill, backed by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, threatened to place new regulations on coal. Manchin’s agreement included a provision that explicitly authorized the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to further regulate coal production under a variety of legal provisions that could have rendered the recent Supreme Court rulings, which stated that Congress must clearly authorize the agency’s actions, irrelevant. However, Capito asserted that the authorization did not comply with budget reconciliation rules on the Senate floor on Sunday, leading the Senate parliamentarian to eliminate the provision, according to a press release. Deutsche Bank poised for big win as last Lehman legal fight ends
- A + A (Aug 11): One of the last issues in the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers has been resolved, handing a potentially huge win to a clutch of distressed investors led by Deutsche Bank AG. The UK Supreme Court refused Lehman’s US holding company permission to appeal a ruling that said holders of subordinated notes issued by the defunct investment bank should be paid before other claims. The decision effectively brings to an end years of wrangling over what’s left to pay to creditors some 14 years after its collapse. It could lead to huge payouts for holders of little-known Enhanced Capital Advantaged Preferred Securities issued by Lehman’s UK arm prior to its collapse, which were once considered worthless. The ECAPS issue was one of the very last matters that remained open in Lehman’s long running bankruptcy, in essence deciding in what order some of the final creditors will be paid. Picking clean Lehman’s corpse has kept a legion of accountants, lawyers and … [Read more...] about Deutsche Bank poised for big win as last Lehman legal fight ends

It's also planning to expand tests of end-to-end encrypted messages and calls on Instagram. Meta ( FB ) said it's also testing a "secure storage" option for end-to-end encrypted conversations, which have been stored only on users' devices. The new storage service, which Meta says will become the default for storing encrypted conversations on Messenger, would allow users to back up their conversations with Facebook in case they lose their devices. The company said that it "won't have access to your messages" in secure storage.
