In this photo taken on June 5, 2022, Taliban member Gul Agha Jalali (L) attends a computer science class at the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation in Kabul. AFP KABUL — Gul Agha Jalali used to spend his nights planting bombs — hoping to target an Afghan government soldier or, better still, a foreign serviceman. These days, the 23-year-old Taliban member is studying English and has enrolled in a computer science course in the capital, Kabul. “When our country was occupied by infidels, we needed bombs, mortars and guns,” says Jalali, an employee at the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. Now there is a greater need for education, he told AFP. Since the Taliban swept back to power in August last year, hundreds of fighters have returned to school — either on their own or pushed by their commanders. The word “Taliban” actually means “students” in Arabic, and the hardline Islamist movement’s name stems from the religious schools in southern Afghanistan it emerged … [Read more...] about Taliban fighters swap arms for books as hundreds return to school

US confirms search of Trump’s home, asks court to unseal warrant
FILE PHOTO: Former U.S. President Donald Trump departs Trump Tower for a deposition two days after FBI agents raided his Mar-a-Lago Palm Beach home, in New York City, U.S., August 10, 2022. REUTERS/David ‘Dee’ Delgado/File Photo WASHINGTON — The U.S. Justice Department asked a judge on Thursday to make public the warrant that authorized an FBI search of Donald Trump’s Florida home, after the former president attacked the search as an act of political retribution. Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed for the first time that agents had searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. The search is part of an investigation into whether he illegally removed records from the White House as he was leaving office. Garland, the nation’s top law enforcement official, said he had personally approved the decision to order the search. His confirmation was highly unusual since U.S. law enforcement typically does not discuss ongoing investigations. But it came after Trump himself … [Read more...] about US confirms search of Trump’s home, asks court to unseal warrant

5 marketing concepts that need to be reexamined
ILLUSTRATIONBY RUTH MACAPAGAL There are fundamental concepts in marketing that remain relevant despite technology and changing consumer behaviors. This is important since what we know strongly influences what we do. Marketers (and entrepreneurs) need not wait for the consequences of a wrong action to influence new knowledge. Here is a list of five concepts marketers should look into to check if they have the right understanding of the business of marketing. 1. Needs and wants of the customers have to be identified First, most customers don’t even know what they actually need or want. They may know what they dislike but when it comes to new product design, it is still the domain of a company’s technical group, usually influenced by the company’s visionaries. For example, would the idea of an electronic blood pressure monitor come from hypertensive patients? Unlikely. As Stephen King’s ‘It’ Breaks Box Office Records, Here’s How the Author Stays Productive
Moviegoers flocked to the theaters this weekend to see Stephen King 's It , giving it the third biggest box office opening of the year, according to Warner Bros. It , which follows a demonic clown who terrorizes children in a fictional Maine town, took in $117.2 million between Friday and Sunday. Andrés Muschietti's frightening adaptation (I screamed several times during the movie) of King 's 1986 novel also had the largest opening for a horror movie in box office history. The world has been no stranger to King's work . He's published more than 50 novels and non-fiction books, many of which have been adapted into TV shows and movies. That kind of bibliography is not easy to achieve. In 1999, King published On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft , a book that explores King's experience as an author and gives advice to aspiring writers. Here are a few lessons on how King stays productive: 1. Don't wait for that magical feeling--just get it done. … [Read more...] about As Stephen King’s ‘It’ Breaks Box Office Records, Here’s How the Author Stays Productive
