Consumers have more health power in their hands than ever before, but the medical system still needs to catch up when it comes to genomic medicine, 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki said during a panel Friday at the Fast Company Grill at SXSW. The consumer genetics and research company has been a leader in the space since its 2006 inception. Consumers have shown deep interest in the service but have often been shut down by medical professionals, who know little about the segment, Wojcicki said. She pointed toward a conference about 13 years ago, where 23andMe offered 1,000 testing kits and came home with 980. In contrast, the company recently conducted a survey that found roughly 90% of physicians are seeing an opportunity to deliver genetic information to patients and improve care. “I do really think that we’re at a tipping point now where the medical world is really interested in adopting genetic information, but they don’t have the training,” Wojcicki said. “There’s a lot … [Read more...] about Why 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki says the medical world is at a ‘tipping point’

Building The World’s Largest Healthcare Data Platform
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The UK National Health Service (NHS) is the largest nationalized health service in the world, providing healthcare services to around 65 million people. This huge responsibility means that it is constantly exploring new technological solutions that will allow it to work more efficiently and improve patient outcomes. It also handles a huge amount of very sensitive data. Traditionally, this data – consisting of personal health records, clinical data, and public data – has been stored in separate systems spread across hundreds of healthcare and hospital trusts. Its aim is to implement what is known as the NHS Federated Data Platform - to bring all of this information together into a single source where it can be used to improve decision-making and patient outcomes. Inevitably, this will bring many challenges. Healthcare data is some of the most sensitive data that there is, and the task of keeping it secure while still … [Read more...] about Building The World’s Largest Healthcare Data Platform
Relativity Space Launches World’s 1st 3D-Printed Rocket ‘Terren 1’, But Fails To Reach Orbit
(CTN NEWS) – On Wednesday, Relativity Space launched the world’s first 3D-printed rocket ‘Terren 1’ into space. The Terran 1 rocket is designed to transport light satellites into orbit, but it experienced an engine problem after launch and failed to reach its destination. The rocket was powered by super-cold methane and oxygen and appeared bright blue-green against the evening sky. After the first stage detached, the engine meant to propel it failed to ignite, leaving the rocket without enough power to reach orbit. The mission, nicknamed “Good Luck, Have Fun,” carried a prototype and a commemorative metal object printed by Relativity’s 3D printer. They did not have a client satellite on board. The launch was delayed twice before due to issues including cold propellant, bad weather, and insufficient fuel pressure. Terren 1 “World’s 1st 3D-Printed Rocket” Launch Setbacks During the March 11 attempt to launch its Terran 1 rocket, the company … [Read more...] about Relativity Space Launches World’s 1st 3D-Printed Rocket ‘Terren 1’, But Fails To Reach Orbit
Cold shower for Hungary’s famed hot baths
Tourists and guests swim in the water of the Szechenyi Spa in Budapest, Hungary, on February 6, 2023. AFP BUDAPEST — Hungary’s grand thermal baths are struggling to stay afloat, buffeted by rocketing energy bills. For many tourists a highlight of a trip to Budapest is a relaxing soak at one of its many ornate bathhouses. The capital boasts an array of spectacular venues, from neo-baroque pools where bathers can play chess to sumptuous art nouveau confections and exotic Ottoman-era hammams. But running the energy-guzzling baths “costs 170 percent more than last year,” said Edit Reffy of Budapest Spas, which operates the city’s bathhouses. While much of the water is naturally hot, the large historic buildings cost a fortune to run and heat. “It’s a daunting challenge,” she told AFP, saying they have had to up ticket prices, reduce opening hours and cover outdoor pools. Prices at historic Budapest baths like the Gellert have been hiked “by more than 30 percent”, said … [Read more...] about Cold shower for Hungary’s famed hot baths

POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB
The world watched in shock as Credit Suisse, one of the most established global banking and financial services institutions, collapsed and was eventually acquired by UBS. I believe a significant factor in Credit Suisse’s downfall was its rigid stance on forcing staff to return to the office. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder for business leaders to adapt to the changing world of work and prioritize their workforce’s needs and preferences. The Iron Fist: Credit Suisse’s return to office policy In stark contrast to the growing trend of many companies embracing a flexible hybrid work approach, Credit Suisse took a more traditional approach, mandating that staff return to the office three days a week. According to one banker there, “they’re removing our flexibility, and it doesn’t feel great.” In May 2022, the bank’s leadership originally supported flexibility and hybrid work as evidenced by then-CEO Thomas Gottstein professing that a return to office was “not … [Read more...] about POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB
The mindset shift you need in order to stop your inner voice from sabotaging you
One of my favorite lines in a song comes from—wait for it—Katy Perry’s Roar : “I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything,” which is a cue for my youngest daughter to sprint to her costume pile, and the rest of my family to start dancing like crazy around our house. Anytime I am in a situation where I feel like keeping my hand down instead of raising it or swallowing a comment because I felt like my voice wasn’t the most important one in the room, I remember that line. If you don’t stand up for yourself, you are allowing someone else to choose your path. It’s only when you find your voice and stand your ground that you realize you always had the ability to do it, you just had to stand up for yourself. As often happens in my life, I learned this lesson the hard way, as a charity auctioneer. Tell me if this sounds familiar. You walk into a meeting filled with people of all ages and genders. This scenario doesn’t have to be in an office, it could be a classroom, a … [Read more...] about The mindset shift you need in order to stop your inner voice from sabotaging you
Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead
Goal setting is one of those things that seems like it would be fundamental to success. If you’ve read any books or articles about getting ahead in your career or life, you’ve probably come across tips on setting goals (like SMART goal setting) so that you can successfully meet them. But setting goals may not be as relevant anymore, and there may be better alternatives to managing your career–and your life. Part of the reason goal setting may be becoming irrelevant is because of the speed of change and the volatility of the world. When everything is moving so fast and changing, the goals you set for yourself can become redundant. That said, it’s very powerful to imagine yourself succeeding in the future and focus on your preferred version of tomorrow. The key is to seek to be directionally accurate , knowing that things are constantly changing in a way you can’t always predict. Here are five effective ways to take charge of your career when you’re operating in … [Read more...] about Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead
How becoming a kinder version of yourself boosts productivity
When it comes to being more productive, many of us seek out time-saving hacks. You might practice time-blocking , email batching, or unplugging from smart devices. Becoming a kinder, better version of yourself probably isn’t on your radar as a productivity tool, but by looking inward, you can enter a state of mind where you can increase focus and get more done, says Vishen Lakhiani, author of The 6 Phase Meditation Method . “The most important thing we have to do every day is maintain a state of bliss,” says Lakhiani, cofounder of the wellness app Mindvalley . “Studies on positivity quotient [or] PQ—which is the ratio of positive thoughts to overall thoughts—show that the higher your PQ, the better and more productive you are at work.” Instead of a traditional meditation practice where you hone your focus, Lakhiani uses meditation that helps you optimize character traits to become a better, kinder person. “The most important thing in life is your level of … [Read more...] about How becoming a kinder version of yourself boosts productivity
Make this radical change to your to-do list
Last summer, a friend of mine was about to leave on a trip for Mexico when she realized that her passport had expired. One round-trip flight and hundreds of dollars in fees later, and she got the expedited renewal before her trip. But the secondhand anxiety was enough for me to go immediately check my own passport. Expiration: April 2029. I should be good, right? For now, yes. But when—or maybe if, at this rate—2029 rolls around, I could be in exactly the same position as my friend. So, I created a calendar event called “1 year till passport expires” and set it for April 2028. A to-do list doesn’t do the trick for every task Yes, I could have added “renew passport” to my to-do list and set a deadline or a reminder. On many apps, I could have even hidden the task from view until it was time to do it. But do I really want a task that’s not coming up for another half a decade to live in my to-do list? No, I do not. I do have a personal to-do list (in Google … [Read more...] about Make this radical change to your to-do list
