Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When Zach Sims started Codecademy in 2011, he was searching for a way to make coding more accessible and easier for people to learn. Fast forward to 2022, the mission remains the same, but now learning tech skills is critical for people to keep pace with the fast-moving digital economy and not get left behind. We are in a bizarre unfamiliar job market characterized by the dual trends of a Great Resignation, which has 4 million people quitting their jobs on a near monthly basis, and a war for talent being brutally waged to attract, recruit and retain workers. To accomplish this goal, smart, progressive executives are offering upskilling, training and third-party education, mentoring and coaching. It's been proven in this economy that if an employee isn’t valued and offered additional assistance, in addition to compensation, they’ll leave for better opportunities. Since there are around 11 million jobs available, according … [Read more...] about To Succeed In The Future Of Work, You Need To Continually Learn, Upskill, Take Courses In Tech And Find Coaches And Mentors

Filinvest REIT H1 profit drops on office demand slowdown
The real estate investment trust (REIT) arm of Gotianun-led Filinvest Land Inc. saw profits drop in the first half of the year as office locators expanded at a slower pace given the rise of hybrid work arrangements. From January to June this year, net income at Filinvest REIT Corp. fell 32.7 percent to P706 million. Revenues amounted to P1.64 billion, down 16 percent from same period last year. “We are in a period of transition in the office leasing business following the reopening of the economy and the new trend of work on site and work at home hybrid setup,” Filinvest REIT president and CEO Maricel Brion-Lirio said in a statement on Friday. “Many of our locators’ expansion plans were still on hold during the first half of the year although we continued to lock in the expiring leases,” she added. The company said higher utility expenses pulled down second quarter net income to P324 million from P382 million in the first quarter of the year. ‘Lockdown in Maharashtra only if daily oxygen demand touches 800 MT’
Representative image Fresh lockdown will be imposed in Maharashtra only if the demand for medical oxygen touches 800 metric tons per day, public health minister Rajesh Tope said on December 25. His statement came a day after the Maharashtra government banned the assembly of more than five persons in public places between 9 pm to 6 am and restricted the number of people allowed at public functions in view of a spurt in coronavirus cases. Omicron cases were increasing "rapidly", but in general such patients were not ending up in ICU nor did they need supplementary oxygen, Tope said, speaking to reporters in Jalna. "There will be statewide lockdown only if the demand for medical oxygen rises to 800 metric tons (per day)," he added. The minister did not mention the current rate of consumption of medical oxygen in the state. We do not want people to face more restrictions, therefore I am making an appeal to people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour. Wearing a mask is very … [Read more...] about ‘Lockdown in Maharashtra only if daily oxygen demand touches 800 MT’
Long COVID is still draining many workers. Here’s how it affects productivity
Since the very first cases of COVID-19 were identified, this new virus has largely confounded the scientific community. But perhaps even more mysterious are the wide-ranging symptoms that many who contracted the virus continue to experience long after the expected recovery period. This phenomenon is known as long COVID, or long-haul COVID. advertisement advertisement The severity of long COVID runs the gamut, with some people experiencing relatively minor but somewhat disruptive symptoms and others feeling completely incapacitated. Long-COVID symptoms can linger for a few weeks or months; some people have been living with them for more than two years now. Debilitating long-COVID symptoms occur in a small minority of cases, but they are devastatingly real for the individuals experiencing them. Despite emerging scientific and abundant anecdotal evidence, there are many people—even in the medical establishment—who remain skeptical of the potential … [Read more...] about Long COVID is still draining many workers. China state-owned giants to delist from US amid audit spat
- A + A HONG KONG (Aug 12): Five of China's largest state-owned companies have announced plans to delist from US exchanges as the two countries struggle to come to an agreement allowing American regulators to inspect audits of Chinese businesses. China Life Insurance Co, PetroChina Co, and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp all disclosed their intentions to delist in statements published in quick succession on Friday, along with Aluminum Corp of China and Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co. The US and China have been at odds for two decades over allowing American inspectors access to the audit work papers of Chinese companies. Negotiators have yet to hammer out an agreement with the clock ticking on a congressionally imposed deadline of 2024 to kick off businesses that do not comply. Mainland China and Hong Kong are the only two jurisdictions worldwide that do not allow inspections by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), with officials there … [Read more...] about China state-owned giants to delist from US amid audit spat
How pickleball became America’s new favorite pastime
It might have a silly name, but pickleball is a serious sport. advertisement advertisement The paddleball game—similar to badminton but played with a perforated plastic ball—saw a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a lingering demand for court access and sporting recognition. The Sports and Fitness Industry Association reported some 4.8 million people are now playing pickleball globally, and it’s the fastest-growing sport in America. Regional pickleball headlines are almost as delightful as the sport’s name: “81-year-old duo wins pickleball national championship” and “Greenwich pickleball fans ‘crying’ for more space: ‘We don’t have enough courts.'” But the spike in interest is more than just a passing fad or a headline-writer’s dream. Washington State Governor Jay Inslee declared pickleball the official state sport this week. (While making the announcement, he expanded the “certain unalienable rights” of the … [Read more...] about How pickleball became America’s new favorite pastime
Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient
Windmill wants to solve one of summer’s most intractable problems: the blight of ugly air conditioners. The New York-based startup launched in 2020 with a 10,000-person waitlist for its $415 smart AC, a sleek window unit that has more in common, design-wise, with Apple’s HomePods than the hulking air conditioners of yore. The first run of units sold out within 48 hours. advertisement advertisement This April, Windmill’s wifi-enabled air conditioners got a mini makeover with the reveal of a smaller $365 unit —a 6,000-BTU AC that cools up to 250-sq ft., which makes it ideal for a city apartment or office space. (Compared to the original 8.3k BTU $415 unit that we reviewed last year.) The line expansion arrives alongside the announcement of a $10 million fundraising round and the addition of Walmart to the direct-to-consumer brand’s list of big-box retailers, which already includes Home Depot and P.C. Buying A House Is About To Get Even Harder
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For all those who’ve been frustrated by the continuing need to rent because of the lack of affordable housing, the near-term future is looking overall at least as bad as the immediate past. There’s a three-part problem: a vicious demand circle, the economics of building, and investors. Vicious demand circle No one need tell you the personal impact of a freakishly disruptive housing market. However, some details about the current dynamics, although it doesn’t immediately solve problems, might help in planning and knowing when to shift back to searching for a house (because, if you can afford the fixed rate payment, you’ll eventually be ahead of rents that keep rising, even if at a slower pace than recently). The demand and supply issues go back to the Great Recession in 2008. Millions of homes entered foreclosure, credit seized up like a 25-year-old car with a two-year-old oil leak, and the housing market tanked … [Read more...] about Buying A House Is About To Get Even Harder
