TikTok plans big push into gaming, conducting tests in Vietnam, sources say
HONG KONG/HANOI: TikTok has been conducting tests so users can play games on its video-sharing app in Vietnam, part of plans for a major push into gaming, four people familiar with the matter said. Featuring games on its platform would boost advertising revenue as well as the amount of time users spend on the app – one of the world's most popular with more than 1 billion monthly active users. Boasting a tech-savvy population with 70% of its citizens under the age of 35, Vietnam is an attractive market for social media platforms such as TikTok, Meta Platforms Inc’s Facebook and Alphabet Inc’s YouTube and Google. TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance, also plans to roll out gaming more widely in South-East Asia, the people said. That move could come as early as the third quarter, said two of them. The sources declined to be identified as the information has yet to be publicly disclosed. A TikTok representative said the company has tested bringing HTML5 games, a common … [Read more...] about TikTok plans big push into gaming, conducting tests in Vietnam, sources say
10-year-old girl died doing a TikTok choking ‘challenge’. Her mother is suing the video platform
Nylah Anderson liked to dance along to TikTok and share the platform's short videos. Then, in early December, TikTok's "Blackout Challenge," which dared people to choke themselves until they almost passed out, allegedly caught 10-year-old Nylah's attention in her personalised TikTok feed. Nylah hung her mother's purse by strapping it to a hanger in the closet of her Chester home. She placed her head between the bag and the shoulder strap, putting pressure on her neck, according to court documents. The girl passed out before she could free herself and by the time her mother found her, Nylah was unconscious. The girl died five days later in a children's hospital. Nylah's mother, Tawainna Anderson, sued TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance Inc, in federal court in Philadelphia late last week, accusing the social media platform of being a "dangerously defective" product whose algorithm fed the viral challenge to her daughter's "For You Page," leading to Nylah's death. Seniors are pushing back against ageism on TikTok
TikTok has a reputation for being the playground of young people – and for good reason. However, an increasing number of seniors are giving the Chinese social network a go, often encouraged by their children and grandchildren. And the trend is offering old age a new image. Technophobic, frail, cantankerous, senile... Age-related stereotypes are hard to eradicate. They can be particularly detrimental to women, for whom the fact of aging and seeing their body change remains a source of concern. But a surprising boost could come via TikTok and could help them see things differently, according to a study recently published in the journal The Gerontologist . Professor Reuben Ng and Nicole Indran found that older people are increasingly using TikTok, the preferred app of the younger generations. They analysed 1,382 videos posted by users of the social network aged 60 or older, with between 100,000 and 5.3 million followers. The seniors in the video all talk freely about their age in … [Read more...] about Seniors are pushing back against ageism on TikTok
New app urges people to report shark sightings in US
As great white sharks start to arrive along the Cape ahead of the summer, a new program will be urging people to report any white shark sightings off the Massachusetts coast. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and the New England Aquarium on May 17 announced that they’re partnering on an initiative that encourages residents and visitors to report shark sightings off Cape Cod through the Conservancy’s Sharktivity app. The Conservancy is contracting the Aquarium to employ a local citizen science coordinator who’s responsible for verifying shark sighting reports made by the public through Sharktivity – and documenting accounts of shark-seal interactions or other predatory behaviour. The coordinator – Massachusetts-based shark expert John Chisholm, who is with the New England Aquarium and who has been tracking shark sightings for many years – will also submit white shark photos and videos from the public for the Conservancy’s White Shark Logbook. “This is really something I’ve … [Read more...] about New app urges people to report shark sightings in US
US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft
ORLANDO, Florida: University of Central Florida scientists are charging on with an experimental battery capable of reinventing how automobiles and spacecraft are made. By reworking the idea of energy sources, a UCF research group is creating a lightweight battery that would double as the outer shell of a vehicle in what the group is calling its “power suit” project. Led by UCF College of Engineering Professor Jayan Thomas, the group plans to accomplish this with nanotechnology – supercapacitor composite material involving graphene arranged over carbon fiber in a fan-like structure, Thomas said. “The advantage is its lightweight, and can increase the mileage because you’re reducing the weight of the car and in addition to that, you can store energy like your battery in the same composites,” said Thomas, who conducts his research at UCF’s NanoScience Technology Center. While reducing weight, the suit is thought to increase an electric car’s range by 25% to 30%; equating to about … [Read more...] about US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft

Global firms remain upbeat about Indonesia’s digital economy
Sebastian Partogi (The Jakarta Post) Jakarta ● Thu, December 3, 2020 2020-12-03 17:41 533 d66dcbf21949a93b498053ceec3c4812 1 Science & Tech Tokopedia,Indonesian-economy,foreign-direct-investment,e-commerce Free You might have heard the bad news already: Indonesia’s economy has just entered its first recession since the 1998 Asian financial crisis, bringing two decades of economic expansion to an end as the coronavirus pandemic has caused a sharp economic slowdown, throwing millions into poverty and out of jobs. Economically speaking, a recession is defined as contractions in two consecutive quarters, causing a significant decline in economic activity to spread across the economy, resulting in fewer jobs, people earning and spending less, as well as businesses grinding their expansions to a halt or even ceasing their operations altogether. As a result of the pandemic, the Indonesian economy shrank 3.49 percent in the third quarter after contracting … [Read more...] about Global firms remain upbeat about Indonesia’s digital economy
Facebook Upside Appears Limited Despite Strong Quarter
Facebook, Inc. ( FB ) stock rallied to a three-month high on Thursday after the company beat third quarter profit and revenue estimates. However, it was a mixed session because the social media giant gapped up and posted the day's high a few minutes after the opening bell before pulling back throughout the day and closing near the intraday low. The reversal highlighted hidden selling pressure while warning new investors that gains may be limited in coming weeks. Technical and political headwinds are likely to drive price action well into 2020, with massive overhead supply around $200 still in place after July 2018's 41-point sell gap and down day. The stock posted the highest selling volume in the past six years in that session, with shareholders hitting the sidelines after the company warned that privacy issues following the Cambridge Analytica scandal were taking a toll on user interaction. That loss of trust has spiraled into a series of international accusations and … [Read more...] about Facebook Upside Appears Limited Despite Strong Quarter
Payment disruption fears linger as deadline nears for merchants to delete customer card data
Customers will have to enter the details afresh for each transaction from July 1 Starting July 1, payment aggregators and gateways and merchants onboarded by them will not be allowed to store credit and debit card data of customers on their platforms, as directed by the Reserve Bank of India. With a little over a month left, merchants are worried that an alternative system may not be ready in time. Payment aggregators, payment gateways and merchants can store card credentials of customers in their databases only until June 30, a deadline that has already been extended twice, most recently by six months on December 23. In the absence of an alternative mechanism, customers using their credit or debit cards from July 1 will have to enter the details afresh for each transaction, including the 16-digit card number, expiry date and card verification value (CVV). Payment companies and card networks Visa, Mastercard and RuPay are working to implement the alternative – Card on File … [Read more...] about Payment disruption fears linger as deadline nears for merchants to delete customer card data
