Super Bowl ads today feel like missives from another age—one-way, broadcast-style marketing. The crop this year was a heady cocktail of nostalgia and fantastical absurdism with a heavier-than-usual reliance on celebrity cameos. And, like all ads, they relied on a particular set of strategies to reach consumers. One of the principal ones shared by most traditional ads is called interpellation . Articulated most memorably by the French philosopher Louis Althusser, interpellation comes from political theory and is simply a mode of address that turns us from free individuals into subjects (he was writing mostly about repressive governments). The big idea here is that throughout our lives, when we are addressed in a certain way, we perform that role. I once gave a presentation at a university where I showed the State … [Read more...] about Adding The Voice Of The Customer Back Into Our Ads

In China, Tesla could win electric vehicle price battle – but lose the war
A person walks past an XPeng G9 electric vehicle (EV) at its flagship store in Beijing, China Feb 2, 2023. REUTERS/Tingshu Wang SHANGHAI – Slashed prices have given Tesla’s China sales a pop, but analysts – and even fans – warn the U.S. automaker needs to up its long-term game to avoid choking on the dust of fast-moving rivals in the world’s biggest electric vehicle market. Most immediately, Tesla’s January price cuts drove deliveries of its China-made vehicles up 18 percent from December. Tesla’s thick profit margins have put it in a position to take a price war to competitors in China and beyond, analysts say. But they say Tesla has lagged competitors in China in introducing new models, improving navigation systems and adding luxe interior touches or white-glove customer service to serve the developing range of consumer preferences for EVs. “Tesla’s facing a serious problem of a very limited product mix,” said Cui Dongshu, secretary general of China Passenger Car … [Read more...] about In China, Tesla could win electric vehicle price battle – but lose the war
Amazon Left NYC Customers In The Dark On Biometric Tracking In Their Stores, Lawsuit Claims
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A Brooklyn man has sued Amazon over its alleged violations of a New York City local law regulating the use of biometric scanning devices. The proposed class-action lawsuit , which was filed Thursday in federal court in Manhattan, argues that Amazon has run afoul of a municipal ordinance that took effect in January 2022. The law requires companies post a “clear and conspicuous sign” near store entrances that use such equipment. If a judge certifies the thousands of people that have been to the store since the law took effect and Amazon is found liable, the company could be forced to pay an estimated “tens of millions of dollars,” according to the plaintiff’s attorney, Albert Fox Cahn, the founder and executive director of a local advocacy organization, known as the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project. “I’m hoping that in addition to winning this case, I’m hopeful that this makes a lot of companies think … [Read more...] about Amazon Left NYC Customers In The Dark On Biometric Tracking In Their Stores, Lawsuit Claims
Skateboarder Zion Wright On Having A Custom Vans Zahba Silhouette: ‘It Means The World’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the greatest accomplishments a professional skateboarder can achieve is working with their shoe sponsor on a signature silhouette—putting a product out into the world that makes a statement about who they are and what they stand for. Seeing others wearing the shoe offers a tangible reminder of their influence in the sport. For Zion Wright, 24, who joined the Vans skate team two years ago, that moment has arrived with the Zahba x Zion Wright, his new silhouette that launched globally on March 16. It’s a project Wright says he went “straight to work on” when he signed with the action sports heavyweight. There’s no doubt that in the world of skateboarding, shoe sponsors are everything. So it was a big deal when Wright left Nike in March 2021, arriving at that year’s Dew Tour—a Tokyo Olympics qualifier—with no shoe sponsor. Of course, plans had been in motion for months beforehand to bring Wright onto the Vans … [Read more...] about Skateboarder Zion Wright On Having A Custom Vans Zahba Silhouette: ‘It Means The World’

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sometimes spotting a problem and getting curious about how the issue plays out in day-to-day life is all it takes to land on a multi-million dollar idea. When Flashfood Founder and CEO Josh Domingues’ sister came home one day from work upset because she had to throw away $4,000 worth of food from a catering event – it became the catalyst for a search for a better way that would forever change his life. “My sister was a chef, she called me after a catering event and said ‘I just threw out $4,000 worth of food.’ I started laughing; ‘Polly, you idiot. Why would you do that?’ She said, ‘oh, this feeling sucks, my boss was over my shoulder making me do it.’ “So I started reading about food waste and I learned that if international food waste were a country it’d be the third leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions behind the US and China. “That led me to talking to store managers in Toronto and I discovered they’re … [Read more...] about The Idea That Saved Shoppers $150 Million: This Innovative App Is Taking On Food Waste And Winning

Winning The Tech Talent War: It’s Time To Treat Engineers As Business People
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I am the CEO at Happy Money and have spent my career connecting ‘fin’ and ‘tech’ by uniting the benefits of Silicon Valley and Wall Street. Employees are seeking new job opportunities, and the “Great Resignation” continues to present challenges for employers. Attracting and retaining top talent in the face of fierce competition is difficult, and even more so for engineering talent. The “must-haves” for engineers closely follow the broader trends in workforce retention with an increased focus on growth and purpose. More than half of engineers in a survey from Stack Overflow said they are looking for opportunities to learn at work. A similar number said they are drawn to companies focusing on the developer experience. With this shift in the expectations and mindset of engineers, many companies are adopting new strategies to attract tech talent. For example, traditional financial institutions are … [Read more...] about Winning The Tech Talent War: It’s Time To Treat Engineers As Business People
