When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? The future of forests is on a … [Read more...] about In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all

COVID narrows door to dialysis, options for kidney disease patients
Artwork by Daniella Marie Agacer MANILA, Philippines—When COVID-19 hit, death moved a step closer to immunocompromised people who were suffering from kidney or end stage kidney disease (ESKD) because the pandemic either blocked or disrupted access to the one treatment they needed most—dialysis. Dr. Carlo Trinidad, a nephrologist (specialist in kidney diseases), said that while data were lacking, there’s a consensus that there were kidney disease patients whose deaths were because of complications from “missed” dialysis treatments. He explained in Kidney International Reports’ “Perpetual Lockdown: The State of COVID-19 and Kidney Disease in the Philippines” that the complications often lead to hospitalization or death. Trinidad said some kidney disease patients were unable to continue dialysis because of lack of dialysis centers dedicated to kidney disease sufferers who also had COVID. Two other aggravating circumstances were loss of income as a result of COVID infection and … [Read more...] about COVID narrows door to dialysis, options for kidney disease patients

The Three “E”s Of Direct Air Capture: Essential, Evolving, And Everlasting
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It was a great pleasure and honor to have been asked by the Foundation for Climate Restoration to moderate an expert panel on Direct Air Capture (DAC) at the end of April as part of the Foundation’s Solution Series . The panelists – Merritt Dailey, Celina Scott-Buechler, and Chris Neidl – were terrific and I not only learned a lot from them, I also received a much-needed dose of climate inspiration. Among the big take-aways for me is how quickly the DAC industry has grown over the past few years. When I started learning about DAC, there were really only three (really two and a half) firms in this market. Now, just three years later, according to Chris Neidl, there are over 50 DAC firms, all with different technological approaches to solving the problem of capturing diffuse CO2, refining it, and either sequestering or incorporating it into other products or processes. This panel served as a prompt for me to re-engage … [Read more...] about The Three “E”s Of Direct Air Capture: Essential, Evolving, And Everlasting

Cover your home loan with a credit shield insurance policy
Abhishek Bondia In the books of financiers, home loan is considered to be one of the safest debts. A home loan is fully backed by a collateral, which is 20 to 25 per cent higher in market value. Further, the quantum of loan to be sanctioned is ascertained based on the income-generating ability of the borrower and not the underlying asset. The latter is true for commercial loans. Due to their low-risk profile, home loans are charged the lowest interest rates. However lenders have realized that when they look at the broader picture, i.e., the entire book, a certain proportion of loans end up as defaults because of the borrower’s death. Banks can take possession of the property to recover the principal amount. However, selling a real estate asset is a long-drawn process. To circumvent this, banks recommend that their borrowers buy life insurance. The question is whether this is good for the borrower as well.
