Micah Walker Detroit Free Press Published 7:47 PM EDT Sep 3, 2019 Thirteen-year-old DaMaura Perkins was set to start high school this fall. The teen was a scholar, making the honor roll throughout elementary and middle school. She was the cheerleading captain at Brewer Academy on Detroit's east side. She wanted to be a lawyer when she grew up, hoping to become the first black female to serve as a Supreme Court justice. Unfortunately, DaMaura's life was cut short. On Saturday, DaMaura was in a vehicle with family and friends when the vehicle's driver crashed into a tree on McNichols Road near Bradford on Detroit's east side around 11:30 p.m., said Detroit Police. According to WXYZ, the driver was behind the wheel of a a stolen maroon Chevrolet Tahoe. WJBK-TV reported the woman was 16. Anytime the family made a trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, from their town four hours away, a young Renier Steenkamp would beg his parents to take him to the fire station. Now, Steenkamp has served as a firefighter at the Hastings Fire Department for five years. It was a long road to get here. Being a firefighter appealed to Steenkamp at a young age for many reasons — one being his “military-style” upbringing, something that is common in South Africa, Steenkamp said. It had started with his grandfather and trickled down to his father. “Everything was on time, strict, routine. I also love extreme sports and danger. That is why I wanted to get into it,” Steenkamp said.
