Q&A: John Legend On Activism, His New Album, Playing Live And Marvin Gaye

May 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At only 43, John Legend has accomplished an incredible amount already in his career. He was the first Black man and youngest artist ever to achieve the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). For Legend, all of that success was so he could make a difference in the world. As he recalled when we spoke over Zoom last week he won an essay contest at 15 by saying he would become a famous musician use that fame to make the world a better place. He is helping do that this Memorial Day Weekend when he will headline the Northwell Health "Side By Side" benefit show this Saturday, May 29, at New York's UBS Arena. Legend will perform with Jason DeRulo at a gig that raises money for healthcare services for veterans and their families. I spoke with Legend about why it was especially important for him to support our military during these difficult times, his love of playing life, how artists like Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder and … [Read more...] about Q&A: John Legend On Activism, His New Album, Playing Live And Marvin Gaye

Psycho Bunny Stores Are Multiplying Rapidly, U.S. Locations To Double This Year

May 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Trendy menswear brand Psycho Bunny is crazy about physical stores. The brand, known for its polo shirts and its skull-and-crossbones-with-bunny-ears logo, is leaning heavily into brick-and-mortar after seeing that its physical stores not only are four-wall profitable, but that they dramatically boost online sales in the markets where they are located. After opening 20 U.S. stores last year, the company has 29 new U.S locations in the works to open this year. It also is ramping up its global expansion, and plans to grow its portfolio to 130 stores worldwide by the end of this year. Psycho Bunny jumped into physical stores just before the pandemic, and found that even with quarantines and lockdowns its stores drew lots of in-person visitors, as well as drawing more online sales. In terms of online sales, “the metro areas that have stores have out-paced by more than 200% cities that don’t have stores,” said Justin … [Read more...] about Psycho Bunny Stores Are Multiplying Rapidly, U.S. Locations To Double This Year

Breitling Unveils Cosmonaute To Honor 60 Years Since Its First Historic Space Flight

May 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Breitling does it again. Today, the brand makes a real statement about its heritage and watchmaking prowess at a huge product-release event in Zurich. Not only is the Swiss watch brand releasing an all-new beloved Cosmonaute watch, but also it is recalling its rich aviation history for this release. The new timepiece recalls the watch worn by American astronaut Scott Carpenter in a space mission in 1962. Additionally, to set the tone for the release event, Breitling even brings the original watch worn by Carpenter (and fairly well destroyed in the seawater landing) to the forefront for the first time since the mission. The Space and Watch Race In the 1960’s when the world is in a space race, with various countries competing to be first in space and first on the moon, a similar race was taking place on Earth in the world of wristwatches. Watch brands were vying for room on astronaut’s and cosmonaut’s wrists. In … [Read more...] about Breitling Unveils Cosmonaute To Honor 60 Years Since Its First Historic Space Flight

Duncan Taylor Releases 50- And 51-Year-Old Whiskies From Caperdonich And Kinclaith

May 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky , one of Scotland’s legendary independent bottlers, has released two exceptional, ultra-aged whiskies as part of their “Rarest of the Rare” portfolio. The Kinclaith 51-year-old and Caperdonich 50-year-old both date back to 1969. They form part of a collection of rare whisky casks from closed distilleries, which Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has matured in their warehouse for half a century. Both whiskies come from what the Scotch whisky industry terms “lost distilleries” - these are distilleries that have been closed and subsequently demolished. Kinclaith’s existence ended in 1975 and the production of Caperdonich from Rothes finished in 2002. Once the existing stock of whisky is depleted, it will never be available again. Kinclaith’s origins date back to 1957. Located on the south side of the river Clyde, this small malt distillery was located within the grounds of the massive … [Read more...] about Duncan Taylor Releases 50- And 51-Year-Old Whiskies From Caperdonich And Kinclaith

May 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the famed and artistic pass, their work and legacy generally live on. And in some cases, so does their latest work. This has been the case with Virgil Abloh, who died at 41, succumbing to cancer. One of the creative’s last projects was the Nike Air Force 1 for Louis Vuitton. The breadth of that work which epitomizes the late designer’s creed that if you change three percent of something, you have made it new, is on display in a new pop-up exhibit sponsored by the luxury giant at the Greenpoint Terminal Market in Brooklyn. Open from May 21 st through the 31 st, and accessible to the public free of charge, the “Dream Now” exhibition explores 47 styles of customized Air Force 1 shoes with the Louis Vuitton classic patterns altered and tweaked by Abloh that make them uniquely Vuitton uniquely Abloh. Say Their Names: Here Are The Victims Of The Buffalo Hate Crime Shooting

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Tragedy hit yet again on Saturday, May 14, during a racially-motivated domestic terrorist attack in a Buffalo, N.Y. grocery store that led to the murder of ten people. The identified shooter, Payton S. Gendron, who cited the Christchurch gunman as his inspiration for carrying out the hate shooting, was quickly taken into custody after the attack on Saturday afternoon and is currently in jail. Although there is some comfort in knowing that Gendron is no longer free to continue his planned murder spree of Black Buffalo residents, his actions add to a long list of similar White supremacist attacks that have specifically targeted Blacks and the growing fear that many Black people face living America. However, we cannot allow the sensationalism of this heinous terrorist act to overshadow the life and legacy of those who lost their lives. On Saturday, news broke that a mass shooting occurred at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. … [Read more...] about Say Their Names: Here Are The Victims Of The Buffalo Hate Crime Shooting

She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online

May 24, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

By Rachel Metz , CNN Business Updated 1124 GMT (1924 HKT) May 24, 2022 (CNN Business) Cher Scarlett, a software engineer, has a history of being misidentified by face-scanning technology, including one instance that may have surfaced a distant ancestor in a photo. So when she was introduced to an online facial-recognition tool she hadn't heard of, she wanted to see whether it would mistake photos of her mom or daughter for her. On February 1, Scarlett uploaded some images of her teenage daughter and her mom to PimEyes , a facial-recognition website meant to be used to find pictures of yourself from around the web — ostensibly to help stamp out issues such as revenge porn and identity theft. She didn't get any images of herself in return — pictures of her daughter yielded other kids, she said, while one of her mom led to some pictures of her mother, plus images of other, similar-looking women. Anyone can use this powerful facial-recognition tool — and … [Read more...] about She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online

Colleges Facing Mental Health Crisis, Here’s What The Bachelorette’s Zac Clark Is Doing About It

May 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Judd Apatow, who directed the movie Knocked Up , once called college the reward for surviving high school. That may be true for many. But like eating pumpkin pie while skydiving, such rewards aren’t always easy to take. Evidence suggests that college campuses across the U.S. have been embroiled in an ongoing mental health crisis for a while now. And that’s why Zac Clark, who was a contestant in ABC ’s reality TV show The Bachelorette , recently embarked on his “Keep Going” college tour that kept going from April 25 to April 30. Now these days, it may be tempting for some to blame everything mental health-related on the Covid-19 pandemic and the precautions that have been implemented. However, it’s not as if everything was peaches and creamsicles before 2020. For example, a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that nearly half of college-age individuals interviewed in 2001 to 2002 had had a … [Read more...] about Colleges Facing Mental Health Crisis, Here’s What The Bachelorette’s Zac Clark Is Doing About It

Who’s On Vladimir Putin’s ‘Blacklist’? Not Donald Trump Or Fox News

May 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Close to 1,000 Americans from across the spectrum of politics, business, journalism, entertainment, faith and advocacy have been permanently banned from entering Russia , a largely symbolic move that has generated a lot of buzz about those included, and excluded. The 963 citizens, including president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris—and her husband, Doug Emhoff —were named by Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Saturday to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “blacklist,” or what one translation called a “stop list.” It’s all in response to the United States’ historic sanctions and its humanitarian and military support of Ukraine, nearly three months into Moscow’s invasion. “In the context of response to the constantly imposed anti-Russian sanctions by the United States and in connection with incoming requests about the personal composition of our national ‘stop list,’ the Russian Foreign Ministry … [Read more...] about Who’s On Vladimir Putin’s ‘Blacklist’? The History Behind Common AAPI Stereotypes

May 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month , which celebrates the histories of the fastest-growing racial group in America. The AAPI population has increased more than 35% between 2010 and 2020 and is expected to quadruple by 2060, according to the Census Bureau . While celebrating the history of this diverse group, it’s also important to raise awareness about the rise in hate crimes they’ve experienced, and to work to break deep-rooted stereotypes and biases by exploring the history they’re rooted in. Below are some of the biases and myths the AAPI community faces, and the history behind them. The Stereotype: The Forever Foreigner The AAPI community is not a monolith, but encompasses more than 50 ethnic groups , such as China, Vietnam, Korea, India, Cambodia, Japan, the Philippines, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia , and many others. “Within the Asian American Pacific Islander community, … [Read more...] about The History Behind Common AAPI Stereotypes
