Demand for high-contact gig services, such as Uber, cratered by up to 80%, as people were advised to stay at home. In contrast, demand for low-contact services, such as grocery delivery by Instacart, increased by 450%. By outsourcing food and grocery delivery, consumers transferred the health risk of shopping to gig workers. Frannie, who lives outside of Pittsburgh, was furloughed from her executive assistant job in mid-March.
