Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 1999, Rocío Pérez Ochoa graduated with a Phd in particle physics from CERN, in Geneva, one of the top organizations for scientific research in the world. Following the path of many bright minds over the last few decades, she got a job at a hedge fund and moved to the City of London. In a financial center, one of the birthplaces of capitalism, she had an outwardly great life: education, career, family. But having children, a daughter in 2004 and a son in 2007, changed things. After they were born, she started to ask herself: Am I doing something that would make them proud? Hedge funds are investment vehicles for the world’s wealthy. So, the answer to the question was a definite no. “Making rich people richer does not really matter,” she said. Pérez Ochoa went back to school then, for a master’s in climate change, and then got deeper, eventually starting a company with a colleague, David Disch. The company, … [Read more...] about When Life Inside A Hedge Fund Left Her Wanting, She Started A $2 Million Company In Rural Kenya

Content creation, no more a side hustle for doctors?
Illustration by Suneesh K. Consumers across the world are becoming increasingly accustomed to finding just about every product or service online, and healthcare is no exception. Patients today not only search for doctors or clinics online but also look for all sorts of health-related information, from researching any unusual symptoms they may be experiencing or finding out about the latest treatments and healthcare trends. Having a presence online not just helps doctors to address several health-related queries and reach out to thousands at one go, it also helps patients find information relevant to them. Paramjeet Singh, a physician practising in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, started creating and posting content online about five years ago because he felt it was difficult to cater to the demand of each and every patient visiting his clinic explaining the root cause of the basic problems experienced by them. With an aim to educate people regarding the basics of common health … [Read more...] about Content creation, no more a side hustle for doctors?
International Tea Day 2022: A brief history of the event
International Tea Day 2022 acknowledges the significance of tea in fighting poverty and hunger. The World is marking International Tea Day on May 21 in an effort to promote the production and consumption of tea and create awareness about its significance in fighting poverty and hunger. May 21 was designated as International Tea Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019, after the Food and Agricultural Organization’s Intergovernmental Group emphasised on making more efforts to expand tea demand in tea-producing countries, where per capita consumption is relatively low. The group had also called for measures to address falling per capita consumption in countries importing tea. "The tea industry is a main source of income and export revenues for some of the poorest countries and, as a labour-intensive sector, provides jobs, especially in remote and economically disadvantaged areas,” the United Nations said. “Tea can play a significant role in rural development, … [Read more...] about International Tea Day 2022: A brief history of the event
A happy city is all in the planning
PETALING JAYA: The secret to a “happy city”? It’s accessibility and good public infrastructure, say town planning experts. One of them, Malaysian Institute of Planners past president Ihsan Zainal Mokhtar (pic), said town planning has a direct relationship with the built and natural environment, with both elements directly and indirectly affecting a person’s happiness. “Local authorities are the direct ‘authority’ when it comes to the day-to-day lives of people in districts, towns and cities. “Thus, the efficiency of local authorities in planning and managing their areas are a reflection of the people’s happiness. A well-managed and planned area would have sufficient recreational areas, good roads and transport system, and public amenities,” he added. Ihsan was commenting on the results of the recent Malaysian Urban Rural National Indicators Network on Sustainable Development (MURNInets) 2021 Happiness Index study. Covering 114 local councils in Peninsular Malaysia, the … [Read more...] about A happy city is all in the planning
Waiting for China
Since China began to open up and reform its economy in 1978, growth has averaged almost 10% a year, and more than 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty. There have also been significant improvements in access to health, education and other services, with the mainland now an upper-middle-income country. But rapid development based on resource-intensive manufacturing, exports and low-paid labour has largely reached its limits and has led to economic, social and environmental imbalances. China is also a major influence on other developing economies through trade and investment, and its economy is an important source of global demand. Economic expansion has now moderated in the face of structural constraints, including declining labour force growth, diminishing returns on investment and slowing productivity. Following real gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8.1% in 2021, expansion of 5% or even lower is projected this year. The forecast reflects rising headwinds as … [Read more...] about Waiting for China
England’s ‘Lockdown Legacy’ May Be A Clearer View Of The Stars Says New Research
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Light pollution is an excellent way to monitor our progress in reducing carbon emissions and being more conscious of the energy we use. If we’re doing a good job then we will see a big drop in light pollution. If we’re doing nothing then the night sky will continue to disappear from view. Now it looks like England may have a “lockdown legacy” to protect with new evidence that suggests that stargazers are getting a clearer view of the night sky since the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. A recent star count conducted by CPRE, The Countryside Charity (formerly known as the Council for the Preservation of Rural England) found that more stars are visible at night right now than at any time since 2011. That's when the star counts started. It suggests that severe light pollution is continuing to fall since its 2020 peak, possibly because people are continuing to work from home and, the CPRE suggests, because English … [Read more...] about England’s ‘Lockdown Legacy’ May Be A Clearer View Of The Stars Says New Research
