How Mark Rober became the Willy Wonka of engineering
This story is part of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business 2022 . Explore the full list of innovators who broke through this year—and had an impact on the world around us. advertisement advertisement Picture the coolest, most ridiculously awesome room you can imagine. Maybe it’s got a golf simulator and a billiards table, or radiant-heat floors, or polychromatic India Mahdavi furniture, or meticulously cultivated hygge. Whatever it is, whatever you’re envisioning, it would be even better if it had a secret door leading to another room. And of course, a secret door has to reveal itself in some sick way, like how you run through a wall to get to track 9 3⁄4, or wade through a coat closet to get to Narnia, or turn a bronze eagle on a bookshelf, or push the correct button on a soda machine. It can’t just be a switch labeled secret door, though that’d be kind of funny. That kind of meta humor would be very on-brand for Mark Rober, except … [Read more...] about How Mark Rober became the Willy Wonka of engineering
‘Nearer, My God, to Thee’
The moment the sad news came of FVR’s passing, I sent word to a former colleague in the Department of National Defense to request the protocol office of the Palace and Camp Aguinaldo to please, please, buy a big enough flag. Too many state funerals have featured skimpy flags, which makes the proceedings look skimpy and undignified like someone placed a printed napkin on the coffin. The former colleague said not to worry; his own father, a retired officer, had recently passed, and he said he’d been furious over the tiny size of the government-issued flag. As I watched the video feed of President Ramos’ funeral, I was relieved to see that when his urn was placed, for ceremonial purposes, inside a temporary coffin, it was draped, in turn, by an appropriately-sized flag. There is, perhaps, a very small fraternity, indeed, about people who either notice or care about such things. The armed forces, for all their institutional orientation about things (they manualize everything, which is as … [Read more...] about ‘Nearer, My God, to Thee’

Serena Williams says “countdown has begun” to retirement
Saying “the countdown has begun,” 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams announced Tuesday she is ready to step away from tennis so she can turn her focus to having another child and her business interests, presaging the end of a career that transcended sports. In an essay released Tuesday by Vogue magazine, and a post on Instagram — the sorts of direct-to-fans communication favored these days by celebrities, a category she most definitely fits — Williams was not completely clear on the timeline for her last match, but she made it sound as if that could be at the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York. “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun,” Williams, who turns 41 next month, wrote on Instagram. “I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just (as) exciting … [Read more...] about Serena Williams says “countdown has begun” to retirement

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sports fans are in luck right now, as we are about see a convergence of huge events, many of them held only once every two to four years, along with some entirely new but very high-profile options. Here are some of the biggies and how you can go see them. World Cup 2022 Next up is the world’s No. 1 sports spectacle, the men’s soccer World Cup, a quadrennial tournament like the Summer or Winter Olympic Games. Soccer is the most popular spectator sport in the world, and if you don't go this fall, you won't be able to see it again until 2026. Every World Cup is rare in the sense of the four-year cycle, but this one is even more notable because of a couple of firsts, including the fall dates, so it does not conflict with the busy summer family vacation travel season, and the Middle East location (not without some controversy, a ccording to the New York Times ). As a result, 1.3 million visitors are expected to visit Qatar … [Read more...] about Sports Travel—How To Attend The Biggest Sports Events In The World
Why ‘story of acceptance’in MMK felt very personalto Paolo Gumabao
Paolo Gumabao “I appreciate him so much for accepting me—a child who isn’t his—and for treating me like his own,” said actor Paolo Gumabao as a way to pay tribute to the man who raised him. Even though Paolo’s biological father is ’80s actor Dennis Roldan, Paolo grew up in the care of his mom Sheryl Sorreta and stepfather Pao Chen. “I love and respect my stepfather so much because of all the things he did for me. This was why I was able to completely relate to the story of Jason,” he told reporters during a recent virtual media gathering to promote the Aug. 20 episode of the drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK). Paolo and Nonie Buencamino play son and father, respectively, in a story about how they accepted each other’s sexuality and profession. “Jason is gay so he looked up to his mother more, and he was never really close to his father while growing up. Jason also does not appreciate what his dad does for a living… as a garbage collector,” Paolo explained. “It is a story … [Read more...] about Why ‘story of acceptance’in MMK felt very personalto Paolo Gumabao
The Kentucky Derby: Great Fun And A Must-Do For Your Bucket List
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Famous Churchill Downs racetrack - you have to see it in person to appreciate it. I’ll Have Another, as in I’ll Have Another Kentucky Derby, hopefully as soon as next year. I just returned from Louisville, Churchill Downs, and “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” and I can sum my experience up in one word: Awesome. I’ve been to a lot of major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, and the argument could be made that the Kentucky Derby is the best of all, mainly because it is about so much more than the race itself. Go to the World Series or NBA Finals and you get 3 hours of entertainment. Much of the fun surrounding the Super Bowl is in the form of invitation-only parties and VIP events, not the game. But the Kentucky Derby is the complete package, morning to night fun - for two full days - at a minimum. You don’t have to know anything about horse racing to love the Derby, with all its pomp and … [Read more...] about The Kentucky Derby: Great Fun And A Must-Do For Your Bucket List

Super Bowl’s “Taste Of the NFL” – The Best Food Event You Never Heard Of
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Cake Boss made sure this Super Bowl dessert would be sweet for fans of both teams. In my last post , I wrote about how impressed I was with Indianapolis as a tourist city and as a host for what had to be the smoothest, best run Super Bowl imaginable. In a week filled with parties, big name concerts and all sorts of VIP events, the Taste of the NFL and its Party With A Purpose took the cake - except in this case the cake was a huge depiction of a football field complete with edible Eli Manning and Tom Brady jerseys and even the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The thing that makes this event so notable is that it is not new and not specific to any host city - it has been held for 21 straight years of Super Bowls, and will be held again next year (2013) in New Orleans, and after that in New York, and then Phoenix. My suggestion? Buy a ticket. The cool thing is you don’t have to be going to the game, which for most … [Read more...] about Super Bowl’s “Taste Of the NFL” – The Best Food Event You Never Heard Of
