- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): The Federal Court has ruled that road accident victims should be automatically compensated without having to sue insurance companies, according to a report by Free Malaysia Today . In delivering the landmark ruling, Federal Court judge Datuk Abdul Rahman Sebli said the provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987 should be construed to protect all motorists, including victims of road accidents. He also said that Parliament's intention in enacting the law was to protect innocent third-party road users. According to the news portal, Rahman said this in a 140-page judgement on a decision delivered by a three-member bench he led last week — the two other judges were Datuk Seri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim and Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang — that allowed the appeals of eight motorists, seven of whom were injured in motor accidents. Five of the appeals involved Pacific & Orient Insurance Co Ltd, Amgeneral Insurance Bhd, Allianz General Insurance … [Read more...] about Landmark: Fed Court rules that crash victims should be automatically compensated

Making Sense Of The Corporate Net Zero Commitment Maze
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While the pace of change might be too slow for some, there is no doubt that net-zero is more mainstream in the business world than it was, say a decade ago. According to Net Zero Tracker, almost two thirds (683) of the 2,000 largest publicly traded companies in the world have now made corporate commitments. A recent white paper by the Finnish start-up Compensate – Getting the claims right – highlights many of the issues around net zero commitments. For example, it notes that some companies have set goals decades away, but have not set emission reduction targets over the next 10 years, or that some “routinely exaggerate or misreport” their progress towards their net zero targets. Compensate’s chief impact officer, Niklas Kaskeala, who has more than 15 years’ experience in sustainability and climate change, said over half of the biggest companies in the world now have some sort of climate change, carbon … [Read more...] about Making Sense Of The Corporate Net Zero Commitment Maze
MOF Inc-owned Pernas seeks summary judgement in RM46 mil lawsuit against Serba Dinamik MD, two former execs
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (Pernas), who is suing Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd's managing director Datuk Dr Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah and two former senior executives of the oil and gas services outfit's subsidiaries to claim the return of RM46.49 million over a share investment that went bad, has applied for a summary judgement against the trio. It filed the application on Aug 1 through Messrs Azmi & Associates, claiming that the defendants' defence has no merit, and that there are no longer triable issues to be decided by the court. Pernas, a Minister of Finance Inc (MOF Inc)-owned company with the mandate to lead the development of Malaysia's franchise industry, initiated the lawsuit in May. The two other defendants named in the lawsuit are Rosland Othman and Rosli Hamat. Natural Gas Is The Flexibility Needed For More Wind And Solar
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Adding flexibility and reliability, more natural gas will be critical to more wind and solar power / ... [+] AFP PHOTO / - / China OUT (Photo credit should read -/AFP/Getty Images) "Shale & renewables: a symbiotic relationship," Citi, here I have already shown here and here how U.S. natural gas power plants continue to increase in efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the high flexibility of these plants will also be increasingly critical in the years ahead. That's because gas is the backup source for more wind and solar power, which are naturally intermittent and need gas peaking plants to compensate for when "the wind doesn't blow" and "the sun doesn't shine." Gas combined cycle plants have a quick "ramp up" ability in a matter of minutes to generate electricity for those unforeseen periods when the wind and/or solar option goes away. As headlined here by MIT Technology … [Read more...] about Natural Gas Is The Flexibility Needed For More Wind And Solar

Blood pours from Thai man’s mouth who chewed pork skewer with blades inside it
Blood poured from a man’s mouth after he chewed a skewer of grilled pork yesterday in the Samut Prakan province in central Thailand. He found several pieces of sharp cutter blades inside the meat, which he bought from a vendor in Phra Pradaeng district. The 29 year old man, Tongpoon, bought two skewers of grilled pork – or “Moo Ping” and a bag of sticky rice from a vendor on Pu Chao Saming Plai Road in Klang subdistrict yesterday afternoon. Tongpoon took the Moo Ping home to eat. He ate one skewer, which he said was normal. Once he started chewing the second skewer, he said he felt like he was chewing on something hard, like a bone. Pain kicked in and blood started pouring out of Tongpoon’s mouth, which is when he inspected the skewer and found several pieces of sharp metal blades within it. Tongpoon took photos of the offending skewer for evidence to show to the media. He took the blades back to show the Moo Ping vendor, who said they were unaware of the blades inside the … [Read more...] about Blood pours from Thai man’s mouth who chewed pork skewer with blades inside it
DITO slapped P622-M bill for fraudulent calls
Globe Telecom Inc. wants DITO Telecommunity to pay P622 million in penalty for allegedly violating their interconnecting agreement, claiming that fraudulent calls were made through the third telco player’s network to the Ayala-led channel. In a statement on Tuesday, Globe said it had asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to compel the Davao businessman Dennis Uy-led telco firm to compensate it for the latter’s actions. “An average of 1,000 fraudulent calls—identified as international in origin but masked as local calls—are allowed to pass through DITO’s network to Globe users every day, in violation of interconnect rules,” Globe explained, noting that such calls continue to pass through DITO’s network. The interconnectivity deals of Globe and DITO allow their users to call and send messages to each other. The Ayala-led company said the penalty covers July 2021 to July 2022 due to “DITO’s adamant refusal to compensate Globe, defying provisions of its … [Read more...] about DITO slapped P622-M bill for fraudulent calls
Better Solutions For Rx Problems
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The reconciliation bill Democrats in Congress are about to pass will impose price controls on prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries (although they are couched in terms of price negotiation). Critics note that the measure would lead to fewer new drugs , fewer cures, more avoidable deaths, and higher drug prices for the private sector. University of Chicago economist Tom Philipson estimates that because of the price controls there will be 135 fewer new drugs in the next two decades – causing a loss of 331.5 million life-years in the U.S. That is a reduction in life spans about 31 times as large as from Covid-19 to date! Still, public opinion polls show high approval for the proposal. Why is that? In all likelihood it’s because voters realize there are problems that need solving. Here are some better solutions. Give Medicare enrollees access to rational insurance. In a proper insurance … [Read more...] about Better Solutions For Rx Problems
