About 20% of insurance claims filed in 2022 were suspected to be fraudulent. Statistics reveal that the U.S. government loses a staggering $308.6 billion annually to insurance fraud. These losses are passed on to insurance companies and eventually to consumers. As president of my company, I regularly interact with multiple insurance companies experiencing fraud claims and provide them with reliable transcription services to identify and combat such claims. With accurate transcripts, insurance adjusters can detect inconsistencies and uncover misleading claims that may go unnoticed in video documentation. The Need For Climate Risk Disclosures: A Case Study Of Physical Risk Of Two REITS, EQR And ARE
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Both REITs admit climate risk is a material risk factor in their 10Ks. Coastal Risk, a consulting firm, and I tried estimating such risk using publicly available data. We made some progress but could not go too far. We need rules on quantitative climate risk disclosures that would help investors bound such risks, contrary to claims that our current voluntary disclosure regime is adequate. Climate risk disclosures are arguably the most controversial development in the staid world of accounting and reporting in recent times. As a case study, consider the SEC’s proposed climate risk disclosure rule which is reported to have attracted over 14,000 comment letters. The proponents of more and useful disclosure (including me) argue that climate-induced physical and transition risks are real for many businesses, but the current state of required disclosure does not give investors enough information to get a reasonable handle on … [Read more...] about The Need For Climate Risk Disclosures: A Case Study Of Physical Risk Of Two REITS, EQR And ARE
Uncharted Territory: Managing The New Security Risks Of Connected Cars
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Todd Moore is Vice President of Encryption Solutions at Thales Cloud Protection & Licensing . The modern car is a complex and highly computer-enabled vehicle. Safety, assistance, entertainment and climate control systems have advanced to the point where we’re starting to see self-driving functionality and remote operation gradually becoming mainstream. These options and flexibility have been a boon for drivers—but they have also opened up new security risks. For decades, the main security concerns for motorists might have been physical car theft or a smashed window to steal the items inside. In the connected car era, thieves might not even need to be physically present and can do more than steal the car. While many media reports have focused on physical attacks, a lot of cybercrime comes from organized crime groups that are motivated by making money. Vehicles Held For Ransom I believe we’ll likely see … [Read more...] about Uncharted Territory: Managing The New Security Risks Of Connected Cars

Relativity Space Launches Its First 3D-Printed Rocket, But Fails To Reach Orbit
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin O n Wednesday , startup Relativity Space successfully launched its Terran 1 rocket from its launch complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida, after two previous attempts had been scrubbed. However, the rocket failed to reach orbit due to a failure with the upper stage engine after a successful stage separation. The rocket, which was almost entirely 3D-printed, is an industry first. Despite the failure, the event will give the company valuable data as it moves into future test launches. The company manufacture its rockets with its Stargate printers, which can help build a rocket from raw materials to flight readiness in about 60 days. “Not only did we develop a new rocket, but we also developed a brand new manufacturing platform that we've used to produce a majority of that rocket” says Relativity’s SVP of revenue operations Josh Brost. The company was founded in 2015 by Tim Ellis and Jordan Noone, both of whom had been … [Read more...] about Relativity Space Launches Its First 3D-Printed Rocket, But Fails To Reach Orbit
InnovationRx: Beethoven’s Genome; Plus, Billionaires Back New Kind Of Health Research

T he composer Ludwig van Beethoven first began to experience hearing loss in his mid-20s. He also suffered from chronic stomach pain and, towards the end of his life, displayed jaundice – the yellow skin associated with liver disease. His health problems have been the subject of much speculation and a team of international scientists have finally gotten some answers: thanks to developments in whole genome sequencing and five strands of his hair. The research, published in Current Biology today, was unable to find a genetic explanation for the hearing loss but did find he had a Hepatitis B infection in the months leading up to his death, as well as genetic risk factors for liver disease that “likely contributed to his death.” It took more than a billion dollars and 20 years to sequence the first human genome. … [Read more...] about InnovationRx: Beethoven’s Genome; Plus, Billionaires Back New Kind Of Health Research
The Importance Of Benchmarking
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin bench·mark: to evaluate or check by comparison with a standard. /ˈben(t)SHmärk/ verb — gerund or present participle: benchmarking example: “we are benchmarking our performance against external criteria” The entrepreneurial community sometimes views the corporate fascination with benchmarking as a symptom of large company conservatism: when you don’t know what to do, check to see what your peers are doing instead of trying something new. Benchmarking is often dismissed as “paralysis by analysis” hated by fast-moving startup CEOs and institutional VCs. But benchmarking against best practices occurs for good reason. Over time, best practices emerge based on the experience of what actions led to successful outcomes. This is especially important in a field where there is little to no formal education, no certifications, and relatively distant regulatory agencies. In real estate, law, or … [Read more...] about The Importance Of Benchmarking
Grab PH seeks 20,000 additional driver slots
MANILA -Grab Philippines, which is keen on expanding presence in the provinces, is seeking additional 20,000 slots for transport network vehicle service (TNVS) as the initial allotment by the government has already been filled. Grace Cruz, country head of the super app operator, told reporters in Manila on Wednesday they have already maximized the initial 4,000 slots allocated by the Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board. “We’re waiting for the next batch of slots. We’re hoping for more,” Cruz said on the sidelines of an event. She said the ride-hailing service provider was still lacking in terms of number of driver-partners, which has yet to reach the pre-pandemic level. Prior to the pandemic, Grab had about 65,000 drivers on its platform. Cruz raised the need for more drivers plying the roads given the increasing demand for mobility with the further reopening of the economy. Apart from Metro Manila, Cruz said they were looking forward to enlist more drivers … [Read more...] about Grab PH seeks 20,000 additional driver slots

More jobs needed for pandemic-hit youth, says WB
MANILA – The Philippine government urgently needs to adopt “more targeted” policies that would address employment struggles among youth, who bore the brunt of the shock that the pandemic inflicted on the domestic job market, according to the World Bank (WB). In a report launched on March 22, the multilateral lender said the employment situation in the country is recovering but still far from the vibrancy seen before the pandemic, with “elementary,” low-paying occupations replacing high-productivity jobs that were lost during the past three years of disruption. WB senior economist Yoonyoung Cho, who presented highlights of the report, said that as of the second quarter of 2022, jobs have returned, but some of the prepandemic progress was reversed. Cho said there has been a decrease in salaried jobs and an increase in unpaid work, elementary occupations and poverty. She said recovery has been uneven, such that this was robust in sectors like information and communication … [Read more...] about More jobs needed for pandemic-hit youth, says WB
