Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The cost of living crisis continues to challenge UK shoppers, as prices for food essentials like bread, milk and cheese continue to rise. The stark reality of the impact of food price inflation can be seen in the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) which tell us that 3 percent of families across the United Kingdom (2.1 million people) used a food bank in the year ending March 2022. In a true north/south divide reality, families in the north of England and Scotland were most likely to interact with a food bank service in the last year. As the appetite for non-essential shopping continues to be suppressed, more consumers are turning to second hand sales platforms and discount retailers as a way to save. UK sales volumes saw a 1.2 percent in February 2023 according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS); the most significant increase since October 2022 but nonetheless subdued. … [Read more...] about Reviving Retail: The Recommerce Revolution Is Helping Cash-Strapped Consumers

MicroStrategy Sticks With Long-Term Bitcoin Strategy But Uses Short-Term Sale For Tax Benefit
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin MicroStrategy MSTR , the business-software company that has a thing for bitcoin still loves the cryptocurrency even though it sold some for tax purposes last month, employing a tactic that could help other long-term fans ease the pain from the asset’s months-long slide. As part of a flurry of late-year transactions, MicroStrategy sold about 704 bitcoins at an average price of $16,776 on December 22, the first time the company had divested any holdings of the leading cryptocurrency. But that followed purchases of about 2,395 tokens for about $17,871 each from November 1-December 21. The company said in an SEC filing that it planned to use losses generated by the sale to diminish previous capital gains, which could result in tax benefits. It also said it turned around and bought 810 bitcoins on December 22 at about $16,485 each, meaning MicroStrategy had a net increase of about 2,501 in its bitcoin hoard since the … [Read more...] about MicroStrategy Sticks With Long-Term Bitcoin Strategy But Uses Short-Term Sale For Tax Benefit

UK grocery inflation hits new high of 17.5% -Kantar
LONDON – British grocery inflation rose again in March to a record 17.5 percent, inflicting yet more pain on consumers battling a cost-of-living crisis, industry data showed on Tuesday. Market researcher Kantar said prices were rising fastest in markets such as eggs, milk and cheese. It said UK households now face an additional 837 pounds ($1,028) on their annual shopping bills if they do not change their behavior to cut costs. “It’s more bad news for the British public, who are experiencing the ninth month of double-digit grocery price inflation,” said Fraser McKevitt, Kantar’s head of retail and consumer insight. The Kantar data for March provides the most up to date snapshot of UK grocery inflation. Official UK data published last week showed overall consumer price inflation rose to 10.4 percent in February, which higher food and drink prices in pubs and restaurants pushed up, with shortages of salad items also playing a role. Overall inflation for food and non-alcoholic … [Read more...] about UK grocery inflation hits new high of 17.5% -Kantar
More food shortages could add to Britain’s price pressure
Empty shelves of vegetables are seen in Morrisons, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, Britain, Feb 27, 2023. REUTERS/Carl Recine/File photo LONDON – Britons already reeling from the biggest rise in food prices since 1977 may have to get used to shortages of fresh vegetables as soaring costs and unpredictable weather hit domestic production. British shoppers have faced a shortage of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in recent weeks after disrupted harvests in north Africa reduced supply, while inflation forced industry buyers to spend more on less from key markets such as Spain. Tax office data showed Britain imported 266,273 tons of vegetables in January 2023 – the smallest amount for any January since 2010, when the population was around 7 percent smaller than it is now. Compounding matters, UK production of salad ingredients is expected to hit a record low this year as costly energy deters British producers from planting crops in greenhouses. The tight conditions have … [Read more...] about More food shortages could add to Britain’s price pressure
BIZ BUZZ: The next BSP chief
If veteran banker Cezar “Bong” Consing didn’t have to take over the helm of conglomerate Ayala Corp. following tycoon Fernando Zobel de Ayala’s medical emergency and subsequent retirement, there’s a good chance that he would be appointed the next Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor. From what we gather, there are prime movers in the Marcos administration who are batting for Consing to be the country’s next chief monetary and banking regulator. But now that Consing may be out of the game after accepting the post of Ayala CEO, who could the other candidates be? By this time, it appears that former BSP chief and Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno is comfortably nestled in his position as chief of the economic team. Whether or not he wants to return to the BSP, an influential source says Diokno will likely stay in this current post. Thus, among President Marcos’ options is to keep the status quo: BSP Governor Felipe Medalla (whom we hear has been backed by Diokno himself) … [Read more...] about BIZ BUZZ: The next BSP chief
