Recent world events have led to an increasingly fragmented global landscape that is dangerous to the security of the economies of the Western world—and here is the part nobody is talking about (yet), especially when it comes to technologies for storing data, like blockchains that ensure the integrity of the data. These tend to be located in places in the world we’d rather not trust. When it comes to our most sensitive and important data, we need to carefully evaluate whom we entrust with it. Blockchains such as Bitcoin and others are increasingly being used to guarantee the immutability of business and financial transactions. The claim of these distributed ledger technologies is that the data stored in them is distributed over thousands of compute nodes all over the world and … [Read more...] about The Dark Side Of Blockchains

The Modern Identity Stack: Startup Opportunities In the $80B+ Identity Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I’ve spent more than a decade building infrastructure for managing digital identity. Before I became a Partner at Mayfield investing in early stage enterprise software companies, I was the CEO at Gigya, which created the Customer Identity & Access Management category starting back in 2011, powering login & registration as a service for 700 customers and becoming Forrester leaders in the space. Now as an investor at Mayfield, we’ve continued spending time on the Identity Stack, investing in Berbix (Instant Identity Verification), OwnID (Distributed Customer Identity Platform), and Vector Flow (Physical Identity & Access Management Platform). Why so much focus on the Identity Stack? First, it’s critical enabling infrastructure for digital transformation. Without being able to verify “we are who we say we are” and “what we can access”, nothing online really works. Second, the Identity category has produced … [Read more...] about The Modern Identity Stack: Startup Opportunities In the $80B+ Identity Market
Too poor for space? Ballooning to the stratosphere is the next best thing
Since the Apollo days, astronauts have experienced an existential overwhelm through their reframed view of Earth as a fragile planet against the harshness of space and the vessel of all humanity. advertisement advertisement It’s an event so profound that it’s come to be known as the overview effect , a term coined in 1987 by author and space philosopher Frank White . For civilians, it’s reserved for a rarified few who can shell out $450,000 to $55 million for several weightless minutes at the edge of space to several days in orbit aboard the International Space Station. But in 2024, two companies— Space Perspective , a startup in Florida’s Space Coast, and World View , an established high-altitude balloon firm in Tucson, Arizona—hope to spread that transcendence to more people through comparable views at much lower prices via high-tech ballooning to the stratosphere, a section of the atmosphere still well below space but beyond … [Read more...] about Too poor for space? Yesha Shah is the Head of equity research at Samco Securities. "Women should focus on the long term and invest in what they understand. Women should equip themselves with at least basic knowledge and engage financial advisors if need be. School still smoulders a week after being hit in razed Ukraine village
The outlines of a wall are all that remain of a grade school in which Ukraine says 60 sheltering civilians died in a Russian aerial bombing attack BILOGORIVKA (UKRAINE) - The charred basement at the bottom of a heap of rubble that was once a two-storey grade school was still hot a week after a military strike Ukraine says killed 60 people sheltering from Russian bombs. Three of the building's soot-covered corners were all that stood upright at the site of what Kyiv alleges was one of the gravest crimes committed by Russian forces since the February 24 invasion of their pro-Western neighbour. Cracks of close-range mortar fire echoed across the smouldering remains of other buildings and military equipment littering the roads of Bilogorivka -- an east Ukrainian village razed by one of the biggest battles of the war. Vladimir Gerasimenko climbed from his cellar during the briefest of lulls in fighting and walked out dazed to catch his first glimpse of the sun in seven days. He … [Read more...] about School still smoulders a week after being hit in razed Ukraine village
Which Comes First: Inflation or Political Instability?: Stephen Mihm
Bloomberg Inflation is often viewed as an economic phenomenon, with mostly economic effects. Policy makers today worry about what inflation will do to the housing market; they express concern about government borrowing costs. They might note changes in individual economic behavior: a shopper pinching pennies at the grocery store. Politicians will worry about being voted out of office if they are blamed for its economic impact. But inflation is associated with more than just economics and electability. It is also linked to political instability. The historical record contains many cases where inflation went hand in hand with major political realignments, coups and even bloody revolutions. This history is worth keeping in mind as countries throughout the world grapple with spiraling prices. That inflation could fuel political instability — or vice versa — may seem self-evident, but teasing out a causal relationship is easier said than done. It’s a classic chicken-and-the-egg … [Read more...] about Which Comes First: Inflation or Political Instability?: Stephen Mihm
The Class Of 2022 is The Future of Work
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On May 6, 2022 I was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. Following that I was invited to give the commencement address. What follows is my address edited for clarity. President Molla, trustees, faculty, staff, students, graduates or soon to be alumni and their families, thank you very much for this distinct honor and the opportunity to address you here today. I make my living as a keynote speaker. I travel all over the world, addressing audiences about the changing nature of work, but this is my first commencement address. To prepare for this, I listened to all the commencement addresses out there that I could find on YouTube. I then reflected on my own graduations and commencement addresses. I asked everybody I ran into for the past two months what they remember most about their commencement address. They had one thing in common. No one remembered their … [Read more...] about The Class Of 2022 is The Future of Work
Dow Theory: Is It Still Relevant? Editor Of TheDowTheory.Com Says Yes
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Manuel Blay is editor of TheDowTheory.com , a website that closely tracks the price movements of the Dow Industrials, the Dow Transports and the Dow Utilities, among other indexes. It’s an old-school type of looking at charts that you don’t hear about much when technical analysts gather to compare notes. Blay says you should be paying attention, there’s lots to be learned. I had a chance to ask him some questions about it and here’s how it went: John Navin : Dow Theory is an old form of price chart analysis. Why is it still relevant? Manuel Blay : It is more relevant than ever for three reasons: 1) Because it works. By this, I mean: it cuts drawdowns and outperforms buy and hold. And it performs much better than its trend-following competitors, namely moving averages and breakout systems. 2) Because it was a track record spanning +120 years (for stocks). 3) Because it can be applied to many markets. … [Read more...] about Dow Theory: Is It Still Relevant? Macron’s Win Is an Opportunity for France and the EU: Lionel Laurent
Emmanuel Macron (File picture Bloomberg In 2017, France bucked the populist trend by voting for Emmanuel Macron against europhobic Marine Le Pen. In 2022, it has done so again – just as Slovenia looks set to eject its nationalist leader. An overwhelming display of pro-EU values? Not quite. Macron’s lead is narrower than last time – around 58%, rather than 66% — and turnout was at its lowest in decades. Voter fatigue runs high. Yet visions of an anti-elite “domino” effect after Brexit and Trump are increasingly fading in a post-Ukraine, post-Covid world. The French have voted for a France at the heart, not the fringes, of Europe – albeit one that has to better protect its people. There is opportunity here for Macron. France has strategic weight as the EU’s only nuclear power, with an economy that’s outperforming Germany’s and that is less dependent on Russian gas in a time of war and surging energy prices. But it needs better direction. Close The … [Read more...] about Macron’s Win Is an Opportunity for France and the EU: Lionel Laurent
Future of co-living in India after COVID-19: 3 crucial factors
The plights of the traditional unorganised and informal co-living sector are plenty Mark Twain once famously said: “Buy land, they’re not making it anymore.” Real estate is one of our most scarce resources. As per IBEF’s Real Estate Report (November 2020), the real estate sector in India is expected to reach US $ 1 trillion by 2030. By 2025, it will contribute 13 percent to the country’s GDP. The residential segment contributes nearly 80 percent of the real estate sector and the demand concentrated in metro cities constantly outmatches supply since India’s urban housing pyramid is a skewed one with the largest proportion of the population being under-served due to issues of affordability. The metro cities in India have witnessed rapid growth in-migration, which has put considerable pressure on the existing rental housing set-up which itself was not historically designed in order to cater to the demand. With more millennials entering the workforce and contributing towards a … [Read more...] about Future of co-living in India after COVID-19: 3 crucial factors
