The trend of Malaysia’s economic recovery is in a better direction, according to the chief statistician. (Photo by Low Yen Yeing/The Edge) - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 23): Malaysia’s economic recovery is in a better direction as the performance of the Leading Index (LI) for April 2022 eased to a better negative of 0.5% from a negative 1.4% in March 2022, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). The LI is a predictive tool used to anticipate economic upturns and downturns in an average of four to six months ahead. In a statement, the DOSM said the decrease in the LI was influenced mainly by a drop in the number of housing units approved caused by a decline in applications from developers during the said month. Based on a month-on-month comparison, LI slipped to a negative 0.5%, dragged by the number of housing units approved (-1.4%), the number of new companies registered (-0.5%), and the Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (-0.3%). The AI-First Database Ecosystem
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Bob van Luijt is CEO of SeMI Technologies the company behind the open-source vector search engine Weaviate . A new ecosystem of smaller companies is ushering in a “third wave” of AI-first database technology. New search engines and databases brilliantly answer queries posed in natural language, but their machine-learning models are not limited to text searches. The same approach can also be used to search anything from images to DNA. Much of the software involved is open source, so it functions transparently and users can customize it to meet their specific needs. Clients can retain control of their data, keeping it safely behind their own firewalls. How We Got Here First-wave database technology is often called by the acronym SQL—the initials of a ubiquitous query language used to manage relational databases, which are conceptually similar to spreadsheets or tables. Throughout the 1980s, this … [Read more...] about The AI-First Database Ecosystem
Bursa expected to stage ‘oversold bounce’ in coming week
On a weekly basis, the KLCI dropped 20.04 points from 1,456.74 at the end of the previous week. (Photo by Low Yen Yeing/The Edge) - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 25): Bursa Malaysia is expected to stage an “oversold bounce” next week after the steep correction seen for the past three months, moving in the 1,450-1,480 range, a dealer said. Going forward, Inter-Pacific Asset Management Sdn Bhd executive director and fund manager Datuk Dr Nazri Khan Adam Khan said the benchmark FBM KLCI is expected to rebound higher on bargain-hunting activities as traders come back into play to grab both higher and lower liners. "I will call this an oversold bounce because the index has been oversold for the last three months, in which we were down for 10 out of 12 weeks. That is considered as extremely oversold. "Despite that, the broader market outperformed other regional markets, which means our correction is lower as our economic data is still resilient. Consumer spending is … [Read more...] about Bursa expected to stage ‘oversold bounce’ in coming week

Bruised US stock investors brace for more pain in 2H22
- A + A NEW YORK (June 25): With US stocks on track to mark their worst first half of the year in more than 50 years, investors are studying a range of metrics to determine whether the coming months could bring relief or more of the same. By any stretch, the first half of 2022 (1H22) has been a challenging one for investors. The S&P 500 is down around 18% year-to-date, on track for its worst first half of any year since 1970, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices, as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) tightens monetary policy in its fight against the highest inflation in decades. Bonds, which investors typically count on to counterbalance stock declines in their portfolios, have fared little better: The US bond market, as measured by the Vanguard Total Bond Market Index fund, is down 10.8% for the year to date, putting it on pace for its worst performance in modern history. With investor expectations fluctuating between continued high inflation and an economic … [Read more...] about Bruised US stock investors brace for more pain in 2H22
Powell sees ongoing rate hikes, says recession a ‘possibility’
- A + A (June 22): Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the Central Bank will keep raising interest rates to tame inflation and conceded that a US recession was “certainly a possibility”. “We anticipate that ongoing rate increases will be appropriate,” Powell said Wednesday in his semiannual testimony to the Senate Banking Committee. “Inflation has obviously surprised to the upside over the past year, and further surprises could be in store. We therefore will need to be nimble in responding to incoming data and the evolving outlook.” Powell’s remarks largely reiterated comments at a press conference last week after he and his colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee raised their benchmark lending rate 75 basis points — the biggest increase since 1994 — to a range of 1.5% to 1.75%. While Powell told reporters last week that another 75 basis-point increase, or a 50 basis-point move, was on the table for the next meeting in late July, Wednesday’s text made … [Read more...] about Powell sees ongoing rate hikes, says recession a ‘possibility’
Walgreens Stock Could Reward Bottom Fishers
Dow Jones Industrial Average component Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. ( WBA ) has been dead weight in the venerable index since replacing General Electric Company ( GE ) in June 2018, with shares of the pharmacy giant slumping to a six-year low earlier this month. However, the bearish tide may be turning with a double bottom reversal that signals the end of the nine-month downtrend. If so, bottom fishers and value players could be rewarded handsomely for their efforts in the coming months. Dow stocks tend to trade in a closed-end system, in which capital rotates constantly out of overbought leaders and into oversold laggards. Index funds are to blame for this phenomenon, which can generate phenomenal returns for experienced market timers. Even so, patience will be needed with this rotational play because the stock is still trading below the 200-day exponential moving average (EMA), which was broken on heavy volume in December 2018. WBA Long-Term Chart (1987 – 2019) … [Read more...] about Walgreens Stock Could Reward Bottom Fishers
Intel Stock Extends Rally After Bullish Earnings and Outlook
Intel Corporation ( INTC ) shares rose more than 8% during Friday's session after the chip giant posted better-than-expected fourth quarter financial results after Thursday's close. Revenue rose 8.3% to $20.21 billion, beating consensus estimates by $980 million, and GAAP net income rose to $1.58 per share, beating estimates by 35 cents per share. Strong client computing and data center revenue helped offset Internet of Things (IoT), non-volatile memory, and programmable solutions weakness. The chip maker expects 2020 revenue to hit $73.5 billion with net income of $5.00 per share and 33% operating margins . Analysts had a mixed reaction to the fourth quarter results. Cowen & Co. raised its price target on Intel shares from $55 to $64, citing the potential for strong PC and server demand along with capacity-constrained mix to drive margin and revenue upside. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin W hether you’re considering a big move or simply want to discover a wonderful new city destination on your travels, think about pointing your compass due north this year. Vienna plucked the top spot from last year’s winner, Auckland, which tumbled from no. 1 to no. 34 this year largely due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. After slipping to 12th place in 2021 while its museums and restaurants were closed, Vienna “has since rebounded to first place, the position it held in 2018 and 2019,” the report said. “Stability and good infrastructure are the city’s main charms for its inhabitants, supported by good … [Read more...] about Canada Has 3 Of The World’s 10 Most Livable Cities In 2022
Philippine peso on track for worst week in nine years; Asian stocks gain
- A + A BENGALURU (June 24): The Philippine peso fell for the eighth straight session on Friday (June 24) as markets feared a modest rate hike by the country's central bank may not be enough to curb surging inflation, while other Asian currencies rose against a weaker US dollar. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) stuck to a 25-basis-point increase in its benchmark rate on Thursday for a second month in a row, fearing that more aggressive tightening could compromise growth. "Concerns over the gradual pace of BSP hikes, weaker budget balance, as well as policy uncertainty under the new president could be adding to PHP drags in the interim," Maybank analysts said in a note. The peso was on track for its worst week since June 2013. It was down 2% during the week, and hovered at a more than 16-and-a-half-year intraday low notched earlier in the week. The Thai baht was 0.1% weaker intraday, touching a more than five-year low, likely pressured by portfolio outflows, … [Read more...] about Philippine peso on track for worst week in nine years; Asian stocks gain
