I wore a fake engagement ring for a week while on a trip to Ireland. I was surprised by how often I looked down at my finger and had the urge to show off my ring. The whole experience made me think about the person I want to marry and whether or not I was emotionally ready to get married. I love weddings. In fact, I already have mine planned – actually two. And though I’m not getting married anytime soon and there is no ring on the horizon, I was excited for the opportunity to get a sneak peek at what wearing an engagement ring might be like. I wore a fake engagement ring for a week and the results were somewhat unexpected. Selecting the ring was easy I randomly owned a faux engagement ring which I received as a party favour: a round solitaire which looked realistic enough so I figured it would be the perfect prop for my assignment. All 109 Golden Globes best TV series winners, ranked from worst to best
Some older series have aged better than others – as is often the case, even with ones that are critically acclaimed and highly awarded. Others, like “The Golden Girls,” are still beloved and finding new audiences via reruns and streaming services today. Many classic TV series don’t have a large body of critical writing about them, especially when compared with classic films of similar age. From “All In The Family” to “Mad Men,” some important and groundbreaking TV series were multiple Golden Globe winners for different seasons across their runs. Ranking TV series according to critical acclaim is bit different from movies – because there are multiple seasons, a show might appear more than once on this list. It also might have completely different ratings from season to season – among critics and fans alike. After all, isn’t half the fun of being a fan of a show arguing over which season is the best, and exactly … [Read more...] about All 109 Golden Globes best TV series winners, ranked from worst to best

All Hail The Uber Man! How Sharp-Elbowed Salesman Travis Kalanick Became Silicon Valley’s Newest Star
Shafqat Islam’s phone was ringing. He rubbed his eyes and looked at the number on the screen. It said unknown, but he took the call anyway. “Hi, this is Travis,” a voice said. “I know Lukas Biewald, and he said you were the only guy he knew in Switzerland.” Islam, part of the tech team at Merrill Lynch Bank Suisse, sat up and wracked his brain. Biewald? He had met the man once or twice, but he certainly didn’t know this Travis character. “Let’s go out!” prodded the restless out-of-towner. Islam resisted. It was getting late and he was tired. He wasn’t in the mood to give his night to a stranger. “Come on, I’m only in town one night!” Travis persisted. “You gotta show me Geneva!” Islam finally gave in. He hopped in his second-hand BMW, picked up Travis and took him to a favourite bar, where Islam learned a bit more about the mystery man. A tech founder named Travis Kalanick, he’d sold a … [Read more...] about All Hail The Uber Man! How Sharp-Elbowed Salesman Travis Kalanick Became Silicon Valley’s Newest Star
How far would you go to be able to smile?
Kevin Portillo practises smiling every day at home. Usually after brushing his teeth. Or when stopping by the bathroom, or anywhere with a mirror. He hooks an index finger into each side of his mouth and pulls gently upward. He puckers his face into a kiss, then opens wide into an O, trying to limber up his facial muscles. He practices both the Mona Lisa–slight, closed-lip–and a wide, toothy smile. At least, he’s supposed to do his exercises every day. Being 13, he sometimes forgets, though he understands their importance. “I need to stretch my cheeks,” he says. “I do it for a couple minutes. I have to do it every single day.” He exercises so much that his jaw sometimes hurts. Kevin was born in New Jersey with a rare malignant vascular tumor, a kaposiform haemangioendothelioma, covering the left side of his face, squeezing shut his left eye and pushing his nose to the right. Immediately after his birth, doctors whisked him away to another … [Read more...] about How far would you go to be able to smile?
