KYIV (Reuters) -Very complex talks are underway to evacuate a large number of wounded soldiers from a besieged steel works in the strategic southeastern port of Mariupol in return for the release of Russian prisoners of war, Ukraine's president said. Mariupol, which has seen the heaviest fighting in nearly three months of war, is now in Russian hands but hundreds of Ukrainian defenders are still holding out at the Azovstal steelworks despite weeks of heavy Russian bombardment. Fierce Ukrainian resistance, which analysts say Russian President Vladimir Putin and his generals failed to anticipate when they launched the invasion on Feb. 24, has slowed and in some places reversed Russian advances elsewhere in Ukraine too. As well as losing large numbers of men and much military equipment, Russia is reeling from economic sanctions. The Group of Seven leading Western economies pledged in a statement on Saturday to "further increase economic and political pressure on Russia" and to … [Read more...] about Ukraine seeks evacuation of wounded fighters as war rages on

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “I was born in a Deaf family. My parents are Deaf. My sister is Deaf.” This was the opening to Thibault Duchemin’s initial investor pitch for his company Ava , a real-time captioning product. Ava was originally created for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community and has recently expanded into the enterprise market. Thanks to his compelling storytelling, Thibault was first able to raise $1.6 million to go after his initial target market. As Ava has grown, the company has gone on to raise a “seed” and a Series A totaling $14.7 million to add a professional live-captioning solution for any meeting or classroom on top of its original AI product. Thibault understands the compact between the storyteller and his audience of investors. As they sit down to hear a story, audience members expect a certain pattern. Too poor for space? Ballooning to the stratosphere is the next best thing
Since the Apollo days, astronauts have experienced an existential overwhelm through their reframed view of Earth as a fragile planet against the harshness of space and the vessel of all humanity. advertisement advertisement It’s an event so profound that it’s come to be known as the overview effect , a term coined in 1987 by author and space philosopher Frank White . For civilians, it’s reserved for a rarified few who can shell out $450,000 to $55 million for several weightless minutes at the edge of space to several days in orbit aboard the International Space Station. But in 2024, two companies— Space Perspective , a startup in Florida’s Space Coast, and World View , an established high-altitude balloon firm in Tucson, Arizona—hope to spread that transcendence to more people through comparable views at much lower prices via high-tech ballooning to the stratosphere, a section of the atmosphere still well below space but beyond … [Read more...] about Too poor for space? "She would still ask for bananas and ask for juice and ask for snuggles, kind of like she's still there, but not really," she said. Seemingly out of nowhere, Baelyn's liver had become so damaged that it could no longer clean ammonia out of her blood.
