(CNN) Shia Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's party was the biggest winner in an Iraqi election on Monday, increasing the number of seats he holds in parliament, according to initial results, officials and a spokesperson for the Sadrist Movement. Former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki looked set to have the next largest win among Shia parties, initial results showed. Iraq's Shia groups have dominated governments and government formation since the US-led invasion of 2003 that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein and catapulted the Shia majority and the Kurds to power. Sunday's election was held several months early, in response to mass protests in 2019 that toppled a government and showed widespread anger against political leaders whom many Iraqis say have enriched themselves at the expense of the country. But a record low turnout suggested that a vote billed as a chance to wrest control from the ruling elite would do little to dislodge sectarian … [Read more...] about Cleric Sadr wins Iraq vote, former PM Maliki close behind, officials say

Indonesia’s NasDem party eyes coalition after endorsing potential presidential candidates
JAKARTA (The Straits Times/Asia News Network): Indonesia's fourth largest party NasDem has endorsed three presidential candidates, and is in talks with other political parties to form a coalition that can nominate a candidate for the 2024 election. The party's shortlist comprises Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo - both front runners in electoral surveys - along with Indonesian military commander (TNI) General Andika Perkasa. All three are non-NasDem members. The party has also stepped up talks with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Democratic Party in what observers say may lead to the establishment of another coalition of parties in Indonesia. Combined, the three parties would meet the parliamentary threshold to nominate a candidate in the next presidential election. Indonesian law requires any party or a coalition of parties that holds at least 20 per cent of Parliament seats - 115 out of 575 seats - or 25 per cent votes of the … [Read more...] about Indonesia’s NasDem party eyes coalition after endorsing potential presidential candidates
Iraq faces deadlock after ‘West-friendly’ candidate suspended
Abu Dhabi (CNN) He's arguably Iraq's best-known face abroad. Hoshyar Zebari, a Kurd, was the country's longest-serving foreign minister, often hobnobbing with Western diplomats and journalists, but also cultivating strong ties with neighboring Arab states to make his country's case. But a bid to crown his political career with a run for the presidency faced a major hurdle last week when Iraq's federal court suspended his candidacy due to past corruption charges, causing an election delay that risks exacerbating existing factional divisions. The presidential election was indefinitely postponed on Monday, stalling the already delayed formation of a new government. The results of October's parliamentary vote, in which pro-Iran factions were dealt a significant loss, were only confirmed in December due to political bickering over the results. A new president would be tasked with asking the winning bloc to form a government. The suspension was a blow to the … [Read more...] about Iraq faces deadlock after ‘West-friendly’ candidate suspended

Trump-Backed Candidates Lose Badly In Key GOP Primaries
Tuesday’s primary and runoff elections saw two Trump-backed candidates suffer massive losses as the former president’s endorsement record endures recent setbacks. Both Trump-endorsed candidates in Georgia lost their Republican congressional races in the state’s Tuesday runoffs. Trump-endorsed Jake Evans from the 6th Congressional District lost to Dr. Rich McCormick by 33 points, and Vernon Jones lost his race in the 10th Congressional District by 49 points to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp-endorsed Mike Collins. Last month, Trump-endorsed Jody Hice also lost his Republican nomination for Georgia secretary of state. However, Trump-endorsed Katie Britt from Alabama did pull out a 26 point win for her senate seat nomination. Democrat and Republican congressional seats as well as Democrat secretary of state and lieutenant governor nominations were up for grabs in Georgia, testing the endorsement powers of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and Donald Trump. Democrats appear to be helping Colorado election deniers win primaries. Here’s why
For Colorado Democrats, the reversal of Roe vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court underscores why politicians like Greg Lopez, the top-line candidate in the Republican race to unseat Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, are so dangerous. Lopez not only believes abortion should be banned in all cases, but also told The Denver Post earlier this month that anyone who becomes pregnant because they were raped should see the pregnancy as a good opportunity. “I’m a firm believer that a child brings happiness into the lives of people,” he said. “It may not have been something that you planned on, it was something you didn’t agree to, but for me a child brings happiness.” Democratic leaders and groups in Colorado roundly and regularly denounce Lopez and other politicians for these kinds of remarks. But at the same time, Democratic campaign groups are spending millions to advance those politicians’ careers — temporarily. These groups have run ads and mailers and sent out texts and emails … [Read more...] about Democrats appear to be helping Colorado election deniers win primaries. Here’s why

With an incredible 24 Democrats currently vying to take on President Trump next year, there's a bewildering number of candidates to choose from. But Elon Musk has already decided whom he's supporting. On Twitter this week, the Tesla and SpaceX boss backed fellow entrepreneur turned presidential hopeful Andrew Yang . Hey look, someone actually being civil and thoughtful on Twitter The conversation kicked off with a typically thoughtful and mild-mannered tweet from Yang. "I don't expect people to agree with me on everything--that would be odd," Yang wrote. "My main hope is that people trust that I'm trying to solve problems and I'm open to different approaches--particularly if the data drives in a particular direction. Changing one's mind is not a bad thing." This comment would only be noteworthy in a world where the current occupant of the White House didn't regularly conduct juvenile flame wars via social media , but sadly that's not the world we live in. That … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Just Backed a Presidential Candidate. Here’s Who He’s Supporting and Why
