Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For years now, economists have debated whether the Bank of Japan’s ultraloose policies were a loser, figuratively speaking. Now we have proof of the literal losses from Governor Haruhiko Kuroda’s team. As of the end of September, the BOJ was at least $6.3 billion in the red on its massive stockpile of Japanese government bonds. This is the first time in the Kuroda era that began in March 2013 that the BOJ announced a loss on assets it’s been hoarding. That, not surprisingly, has investors wondering the extent to which the BOJ’s stock purchases, via exchange-traded funds, might be under water, too. Yet this is a logical moment to take stock of where Kuroda succeeded and failed in his charge to end deflation and revive Japan’s animal spirits. The grade isn’t great. It’s complicated, of course. And it’s worth noting that Kuroda, whose term ends in April, was true to his word that he’s doing what he could to put the … [Read more...] about Bank Of Japan’s $5 Trillion Bet Is Going Awry In A Hurry

LONDON/SYDNEY – Stocks and oil gained on Tuesday on hopes that public unrest in China might prompt an earlier loosening of COVID-19 curbs in the world’s biggest economy, with the yuan up and the dollar down as investor appetite for riskier assets grew. The Euro STOXX 600 gained 0.4 percent, recovering from its worst session in almost two weeks a day earlier. Shares in London were up 0.8 percentand markets in Paris and Frankfurt gained around 0.2-0.3 percent. Hopes of faster easing of China’s strict restrictions rose after an official said they will continue to fine-tune policy to reduce the impact of its “Zero COVID” on society. Simmering discontent with Beijing’s stringent COVID prevention policies three years into the pandemic ignited over the weekend into broader protests in Chinese cities thousands of miles apart. “China is the dominant story in markets at the moment, and the pattern of risk assets that we have seen overnight is what we would expect with better news” said … [Read more...] about Stocks and oil rise on hopes of looser COVID curbs in China
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A young woman with a shag bob haircut wearing a yellow string bikini with white piping sits in seiza, posing playfully for the viewer. Elbows raised to accentuate her feminine form, her ample breasts protrude from the three canvases, as sculpture erupts from the painting. Marjorie Strider’s Triptych II (Beach Girl) (1963) greets us with a contemporary spirit that could be found on Instagram. The liberated femininity that strips away and subverts the male gaze is underscored by the rugged industrial feel of the metallic canvases. Strider built all the elements herself, exposing the nails beneath her painterly silver brushstrokes. The rare triptych from Strider’s 1960s heyday is a highlight of Marjorie Strider: Girls, girls, girls! , a solo retrospective of some 20 works created between 1963 and 2014 celebrating the artist's inimitable depictions of the female form and her groundbreaking shaped canvases, a hybrid … [Read more...] about Marjorie Strider Subverts Male Gaze, Reclaims Her Rightful Role In Pop Art History

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There’s another meeting of the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee coming up in the middle of December—the time after which a press release will announce the next interest rate hike. Not if there is one, because there almost certainly will be, but how large. Press coverage will, as always, be heavy, and the more immediate focus is on a speech Fed chair Jerome Powell will give at the Brookings Institution on Wednesday. “The event provides Powell with a stage to echo fellow Fed officials in signaling they will raise their benchmark rate by 50 basis points at their final meeting of the year, after four successive 75 basis-point hikes,” notes Bloomberg .
