As part of his visit to the US, Thailand’s PM Prayut Chan-o-cha has attended the 2nd ASEAN-US Special Summit in Washington last week. Now, he is inviting the US to invest or set up supply chains in Thailand to fill gaps created by the Russia-Ukraine crisis. And not the least the ongoing disruption of China’s part in the supply chain with its lockdowns and interruptions over Covid-19. PM Prayut said last week, ahead of the summit, that Thailand won’t pick a side between Russia and Ukraine, and will remain politically neutral. However, he stresses that Thailand can help the US fill the broken global supply chain, saying that Thailand is an important trade hotspot. After the summit, Prayut says that he is ready to host US President Joe Biden at the 29th APEC summit in November. “I think we have to adjust in many aspects to keep up with global changes – especially in industry and the economy – and find ways to boost Thailand’s income and GDP in the future.” The Thai PM went on to … [Read more...] about Thailand’s PM Prayut invites US to invest in supply chains

ASEAN firm on international issues during meeting with Biden, says PM Ismail Sabri
- A + A WASHINGTON, DC (May 14): ASEAN leaders stood firm on several international issues during their meeting with US President Joe Biden at the ASEAN-US Special Summit here on Friday (Saturday, May 14 in Malaysia). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said ASEAN leaders also showed a common stand during the discussions on Russia-Ukraine and South China Sea issues. ASEAN wants the Russia-Ukraine crisis to be resolved through the negotiation table, he told Malaysian media after attending the final session of the two-day special summit together with President Biden and ASEAN leaders. “War does not benefit anyone. In fact, many would suffer great losses because of the war,” he said. In this context, Malaysia, he said, felt that the US should use its influence to help solve the Russia-Ukraine crisis. ‘We’ve seen lifelong friends kill each other:’ How a state capital became one of the deadliest US cities
By Peter Nickeas and Priya Krishnakumar , CNN Updated 1408 GMT (2208 HKT) December 28, 2021 Jackson, Mississippi (CNN) Around Thanksgiving, this crisis-plagued state capital saw a series of shootings that pushed the year's homicide total past 130, setting a grim annual record for a city that over the last two years has quietly become one of the country's deadliest. The killings, like so many in another record-setting year of American gun violence , are not the kind that receive national attention. A local business owner was shot outside a barbershop while sitting in his car . A few days later, a man was killed in a shooting that also wounded a 13-year-old boy . A 22-year-old inside a car was sprayed with gunfire at a gas station . A 63-year-old man whose death by gunfire is still largely unexplained . In the state's most populous city, a former Confederate stronghold that would later give way to thriving Black business districts and serve as a hub for the … [Read more...] about ‘We’ve seen lifelong friends kill each other:’ How a state capital became one of the deadliest US cities
Psychedelic companies are betting big on ketamine as the next Prozac
advertisement advertisement Kristine sat in a reclining chair, cocooned in an eyeshade and headphones, with a weighted blanket covering her lap. Incense burned in the background. She felt a pinch in her arm. “Okay,” the nurse said. “Have a nice trip!” Kristine peeled back her eye mask. “How long does it take to kick in?” she asked. “About 45 to 60 seconds,” the nurse said. advertisement advertisement “Okay, then. I’ll see you later,” Kristine said, bringing the mask back down and letting the ketamine take effect. Kristine’s 45-minute-long ketamine trip, which took place last May at a clinic in New York City, is part of a new approach to mental health care, one that employs once-verboten psychedelic drugs. For decades, a privileged few researchers have been charting the success of drugs like MDMA (known in clubs as Molly or ecstasy), LSD (acid), psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”), and ketamine (“Special K”) in treating depression, … [Read more...] about Psychedelic companies are betting big on ketamine as the next Prozac

Feature: Rotterdam breathes new life into derelict railway viaduct
ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands, May 13 (Xinhua) -- In Rotterdam, Europe's largest seaport, the construction of an elevated linear park -- the "longest and narrowest in the Netherlands" -- has become a crucial element of the local authorities' plan to transform the city into a more sustainable and climate adaptive metropolis. A few kilometers to the north of the city center, the so-called Hofbogenpark will be turned into a new two-kilometer-long and eight-meter-wide city park created on the roof of a former railway viaduct. Climate adaptation is one of the reasons the city of Rotterdam has decided to embark on the construction, which is part of a larger-scale plan called "Seven Projects" expected to cost around 330 million euros (343 million U.S. dollars) in total. "We know how to handle water, but we still have this challenge as a low-land country," the city's Vice Mayor, Vincent Karremans, said. "This stresses the need for being climate adaptive and invest more in our climate … [Read more...] about Feature: Rotterdam breathes new life into derelict railway viaduct
No mention of Russia in US-Asean statement

(Reuters Photo) WASHINGTON: The summit between Southeast Asian leaders and US President Joe Biden concluded at the White House with a joint statement that omitted any condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The statement called for the “immediate cessation of hostilities” in Ukraine. The countries said they “reaffirm our respect for sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity”. But the statement did not use the words “Russia”, “war” or “invasion”. The Kremlin refuses to describe its invasion of Ukraine as a war, instead calling it a “special military operation”. Tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed, according to estimates by Ukrainian, US and European officials, and Ukrainian cities have suffered widespread destruction from airstrikes … [Read more...] about No mention of Russia in US-Asean statement
‘MORALLY WEAK’: Why Critics Fear UN Investigation May Whitewash China’s Genocide
Michelle Bachelet, the U.N.’s Human Rights High Commissioner, will visit Xinjiang this month to investigate claims of human rights abuses. “The whole trip will be manipulated by China to show the U.N. delegation what it wants to show,” Dr. Mamtimin Ala, a Uyghur activist, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “[The Chinese] were using journalists and visitors like me ,” Dr. Olsi Jazexhi, an Albanian reporter, told TheDCNF regarding his 2019 state-sponsored trip to Xinjiang. The upcoming U.N. investigation into China’s human rights abuses in Xinjiang will likely fail to uncover any wrongdoing, experts told The Daily Caller News Foundation, because China has covered up its crimes and intends to lead the U.N. team on a scripted tour. Michelle Bachelet , the U.N.’s top human rights official, announced in March that China had agreed to allow a U.N. delegation to visit Xinjiang at some point later this month. Bachelet’s announcement came years after first … [Read more...] about ‘MORALLY WEAK’: Why Critics Fear UN Investigation May Whitewash China’s Genocide
