May 18, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

FILE PHOTO: Bishop Raul B. Dael of the Diocese of Tandag (Surigao del Sur) gives a homily during a Holy Mass for the Earth Day celebration on April 22, 2021. ERWIN M. MASCARIÑAS SAN FRANCISCO, AGUSAN DEL SUR — Tandag City Bishop Raul Dael has condemned what he called the worst and one of the most massive vote-buying in the province of Surigao del Sur during the May 9 elections. According to the bishop, the amount distributed to each voter reached almost P12,000 in Tandag City alone. “Amidst our hardships, this could be the biggest amount of vote-buying in the country,” Dael said in his pastoral letter on Sunday morning (May 15), a copy of which was posted on the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tandag Facebook page. Photos that circulated in private messages in Facebook chat groups showed different money denominations stapled separately for each name of a candidate in Tandag City, implying the price paid for each candidate. The denominations were contained in just one envelope … [Read more...] about Bishop slams PH’s worst case of vote-buying in Surigao del Sur

IndiGo stands by Ranchi incident involving teen with disability, offers to buy him electric wheelchair

May 9, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

An IndiGo staffer called a distressed teen with disability a threat to other passengers. (Screengrab from video posted on Facebook by Manisha Gupta). After facing public anger for not allowing a teen with disability and his family to board a flight at the Ranchi airport, IndiGo said it made the best possible decision under difficult circumstances. The teenager was "visibly in panic" at the boarding area, the airline's Chief Executive Officer Ronojoy Dutta said in statement on May 9. "While providing courteous and compassionate service to our customers is of paramount importance to us, the airport staff, in line with the safety guidelines, were forced to make a difficult decision as to whether this commotion would carry forward aboard the aircraft." IndiGo said it was nevertheless distressed by the incident and offered to buy the teenager an electric wheelchair.  "Throughout the check-in and boarding process our intent of course was to carry the family." The incident … [Read more...] about IndiGo stands by Ranchi incident involving teen with disability, offers to buy him electric wheelchair

Anthem Just Paid $54B To Buy Cigna. No One Knows What Will Happen Next.

July 24, 2015 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Anthem and Cigna on Friday morning announced a historic $54 billion merger that would make the new, combined company the largest health insurer in the country, by total customers. The deal's size is especially notable. (It's the largest-ever merger in the insurance industry). And the timing is remarkable. Just three weeks ago — to the day — rival insurers Aetna and Humana announced their own mega-merger , a $37 billion deal. If both deals get federal approval, America's Big Five health insurers will be winnowed to a Huge Three. So what happens next? And what will it mean for consumers? Anyone who says he knows those answers isn't worth trusting: America's health care system is in uncharted waters. First, there are real questions over whether either or both mergers will receive federal approval. The Department of Justice was already scrutinizing the Aetna-Humana deal — which now … [Read more...] about Anthem Just Paid $54B To Buy Cigna. No One Knows What Will Happen Next.

Walmart Q1 FY2023 Earnings Report Preview

May 16, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

Key Takeaways Analysts estimate adjusted EPS of $1.48 vs. $1.69 in Q1 FY 2022. U.S. comparable sales (excluding fuel sales) are expected to rise YOY, but at less than half the pace of the same quarter a year ago. Revenue is expected to barely increase for the second straight quarter as the boost from the pandemic continues to wear off. Walmart Inc. ( WMT ), one of the world's biggest retailers, enjoyed unusually strong earnings and revenue growth during the past two years. The key driver was consumers who changed their buying patterns in several ways during the pandemic. Walmart's e-commerce sales soared as people sheltering at home boosted their shopping online. And consumers also spent more on manufactured goods as they spent less on dining out and traveling. But these pandemic-related forces are beginning to lose momentum. As a result, Walmart's growth has begun to slow sharply. Investors will be watching whether Walmart can reverse its slowdown in growth when … [Read more...] about Walmart Q1 FY2023 Earnings Report Preview

As Musk tweets, advisers plug away to keep Twitter deal on track

May 18, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK (May 18): In public, Elon Musk’s erratic tweets have sent Twitter Inc’s shares flailing, as traders bet that the billionaire is preparing to walk away from or re-negotiate his US$44 billion takeover of the social-media company. Behind the scenes, it’s more like business as usual, as advisers on both sides plug away at the day-to-day work of closing a megadeal. One potential sign that the deal is still on track: the 139-page filing that hit early Tuesday, detailing how the offer came together and Twitter’s rationale for accepting it. That document was the result of weeks of coordinated work by both Musk and Twitter’s teams, according to people familiar with the matter. Musk himself signed off on the final version — complete with a deal price of US$54.20 a share — before it was filed, the people said. The situation is similar at the banks that promised to finance the transaction, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details are … [Read more...] about As Musk tweets, advisers plug away to keep Twitter deal on track

Jet Airways says proving flights done, awaiting AOC from DGCA

May 17, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Jet Airways has successfully completed all its "proving flights" and is now looking forward to the grant of the air operator certificate (AOC) by the Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA), the owner Jalan-Kalrock Consortium said on May 17. Jet Airways on May 17 concluded its second set of two so-called proving flights with around 31 people, which also included DGCA officials.  The airline had on May 15 conducted its first set of three proving flights with 18 people. The two proving flights on May 17 were on Delhi-Hyderabad and Hyderabad-Delhi routes using the airline’s Boeing 737. The same plane was used for the three proving flights—Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Delhi—on May 15, they said. A proving flight is part of DGCA’s process for the induction of a new aircraft type in an airline’s fleet. The flight allows the operator to demonstrate to the DGCA the airline’s ability to conduct the flight safely and in accordance with all rules and regulations. … [Read more...] about Jet Airways says proving flights done, awaiting AOC from DGCA

DGCA issues show cause notice to IndiGo for denying boarding to child with special needs

May 16, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

An IndiGo staffer allegedly called a distressed teen with disability a threat to other passengers. (Screengrab from video posted on Facebook by Manisha Gupta) The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show cause notice to private carrier IndiGo for denying boarding to a child with special needs , an official release said on May 16. The airline has been asked to explain within 10 days why action should not be initiated against it, the aviation sector regulator said. The incident, which drew flak towards IndiGo, was reported on May 7 at the Ranchi Airport. Citing safety risks, the airline staffers had denied boarding to a teenager with special needs. After the incident drew outrage, the DGCA had, in the past week, constituted a three-member inquiry committee to conduct a probe. "The committee has submitted its report," the official release said, adding, "The findings of the committee prima facie indicate inappropriate handling of passengers by the … [Read more...] about DGCA issues show cause notice to IndiGo for denying boarding to child with special needs

A lone bear, black magic and a $235 billion stock market crash

May 16, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

What does it take to trigger a crash in the stock market? A once-in-a-century pandemic? The biggest war in Europe in 70 years? The US Federal Reserve instantaneously cutting off the supply of the opium of record liquidity and low interest rates? Multi-year high inflation? How about black magic? The Oxford Dictionary defines black magic as a type of magic that is believed to use the power of the devil in order to do evil. In a world where boring financial data, profit and loss statements, and complex macroeconomic events sway the everyday movement of stock prices and stock indices, one Rajkot-based stockbroker claimed last week that he spent more than Rs 8 crore to engineer a multi-day crash in the stock market with the help of esoteric black magic. Close “We are responsible to a great extent for today’s fall and the fall of the past few days in the market. You won’t believe it, but we have spent over Rs 8.5 crore today in kala jadu (black magic) to create … [Read more...] about A lone bear, black magic and a $235 billion stock market crash
