March 2, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Ultima Genomics is No. 33 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. After nearly six years in stealth mode, in May 2022, Ultima Genomics stunned the scientific community with the announcement of a breakthrough in DNA sequencing: a $100 genome, a sixfold reduction in cost over existing technologies and a staggering reduction from the cost of the first fully sequenced human genome, which is estimated to have been between $500 million and $1 billion. Ever since biotech company Illumina developed a way to sequence the human genome in 2014 for less than $1,000, it has dominated the next-gen sequencing field and the cost of sequencing a full human genome has hovered around that price point. Only in 2022 did the going price dip to about $600—still a high price that Ultima founder and CEO Gilad Almogy says is hindering more widespread use of sequencing to understand … [Read more...] about The $100 genome has been a biotech holy grail for decades. This handbag is made from an electrical cord. And yes, you can plug it in

March 15, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Is there anything uglier than an electrical cord? The long, thick plastic wires create clutter everywhere. Artist and designer Nikolas Bentel wanted to explore whether something as mundane as an electrical cord could be transformed into something beautiful. And he may have achieved his goal by creating a handbag out of a 25-foot-long bright orange electrical cord. It drops today on his website for $59. He’s glued and molded the cord into the shape of a small basket—all while keeping the wiring intact, so it can still be plugged in and used. Bentel, 28, is fascinated with helping people to reimagine everyday objects. At his studio, in Locust Valley, New York, he’s created a wacky range of products, including tables made of scraps from a paper mill and a pipe made from a pizza box . In his art, he frequently deploys the skills he acquired from his joint degree in industrial design from the Rhode Island School of Design and modern culture and media from Brown. He’s … [Read more...] about This handbag is made from an electrical cord. And yes, you can plug it in

The Dubai World Cup 2023 Upset: Ushba Tesoro Wins, Algiers Places, Emblem Road Shows, And Country Grammer Finishes A Ragged Seventh

March 25, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A surprising — yet not so surprising — mid-pack second-tier favorite, Ushba Tesoro muscled all the competition out of the way in the $12-million Dubai World Cup on Saturday evening at the Emirate’s fabled Meydan race course and took the win. Touts in London and the States had been looking hard at the colt and were factoring him in as a horse that would work well in exotics and that could not be counted out . In the running he proved that and much more. As expected, the lone Irishman in the mix and a strong co-favorite among the London bookmakers, Algiers, put in a solid showing and placed. Going off as the co-favorite alongside the Bob Baffert-trained defending 2022 Dubai World Cup victor Country Grammer, Algiers fought tooth and nail up the backstretch and around the far turn, but it was Ushba Tesoro under his very thankful jockey Yuga Kawada who got the better trip. Algiers went off at 11-4. The wholly outmatched Emblem … [Read more...] about The Dubai World Cup 2023 Upset: Ushba Tesoro Wins, Algiers Places, Emblem Road Shows, And Country Grammer Finishes A Ragged Seventh

Obtuse: The Fed & Treasury View Of Banking Issues

March 25, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Despite ongoing silent runs on the Regional and Community Banks, it appears that both Fed Chair Powell and Treasury Secretary Yellen view the events of the recent past (SVB VB , Signature Bank, First Republic, Credit Suisse, and now Deutsche Bank) as one-off events and not symptomatic of stress in the world’s financial system. The dictionary defines “obtuse” as “annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand.” We can’t think of anything more precise! The chart at the top shows the continued decline in the value of S&P’s Regional Banking ETF through the close of business on Friday (March 24 th ). On Wednesday, the Fed raised interest rates 25 basis points despite liquidity issues in the banking system and the apparent loss of confidence in that system by a significant portion of the public. During his press conference, Powell acknowledged some FOMC concerns over banking issues, said that they had considered a "pause,” … [Read more...] about Obtuse: The Fed & Treasury View Of Banking Issues

ChatGPT: Is SEO – As We Know It – Dead?

March 25, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin ChatGPT has taken the world by storm. Many have asked if it is the new way to do a search. This question is intriguing given the potentially massive impact on the search engine business space and the competitive elements therein. However, that is not the question I ask - in this article - I explore a related question - if you have a business that has relied on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for traffic and relevance, where does the ChatGPT leave you? Chat vs Search There is a fundamental user intent difference between chat and classic search (regardless of who is providing the facility). Classic search returns multiple answers, ordered in the manner the search algorithm believes is most relevant to the query. Search results can go into many pages. A Chatbot returns one or more answers (but often one), and more than one answer is often returned when the question asks for multiple options. Both approaches are provided … [Read more...] about ChatGPT: Is SEO – As We Know It – Dead?
