North Korea Claims Covid Outbreak Is Taking A ‘Favorable Turn’ As WHO Frets About Lack Of Data
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline North Korea on Wednesday claimed its Covid-19 outbreak was taking a “favorable turn” while still reporting more than 200,000 new suspected cases as the World Health Organization expressed concerns about the lack of proper data from the country and the risk of unchecked spread. Key Facts On Wednesday, North Korea reported 232,880 new cases of “fever” and six additional deaths, according to the state-controlled Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Experts say Americans can assume COVID infections much higher than official counts: media
LOS ANGELES, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Experts say Americans can assume COVID-19 infections in their communities are five to ten times higher than official counts, said an article published by The Washington Post on Tuesday. Some Americans are now navigating murky waters in the latest wave of the pandemic, with highly transmissible subvariants of Omicron spreading as governments drop measures to contain the virus and reveal less data about infections, the article, titled "How big is the latest U.S. coronavirus wave? No one really knows," pointed out. With public health authorities shifting their focus to COVID-related hospitalizations as the pandemic's U.S. death toll hits 1 million, people are largely on their own to gauge risk amid what could be a stealth surge, the article noted. "Any sort of look at the metrics on either a local, state or national level is a severe undercount," Jessica Malaty Rivera, an epidemiologist at the Pandemic Prevention Institute housed at The Rockefeller … [Read more...] about Experts say Americans can assume COVID infections much higher than official counts: media
Vaccine skeptic Eric Clapton catches Covid-19, postpones concerts
Eric Clapton, who has railed against lockdowns and vaccines, has tested positive for Covid-19. The 77-year-old English singer has cancelled two upcoming concerts, Tuesday (May 17) in Zurich and Wednesday in Milan, after being diagnosed, his team announced Tuesday. “It is very frustrating that having avoided Covid throughout lockdown and throughout the period when travel restrictions have been in place Eric should have succumbed to Covid at this point in time, but we very much hope he will be sufficiently recovered by the end of the week to be able to perform the remainder of the planned performances,” his team said in a statement. The decision to cancel shows is in part to avoid infecting his band, crew, promoters, staff or audience. The two concerts are expected to be rescheduled and Clapton hopes to get back out on the road by Friday, when he’s due in Bologna, Italy. The Layla singer has been loudly outspoken about his disapproval of health measures to protect people from … [Read more...] about Vaccine skeptic Eric Clapton catches Covid-19, postpones concerts
New flyover set to ease traffic congestion in Jalan Tun Razak
Motorists heading to the Kampung Pandan roundabout can now use a flyover from Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur. The 2.8km three-lane road starts in front of the Royal Selangor Golf Club before ending in Kampung Pandan. During the launch on Saturday, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said the flyover was meant to reduce congestion during peak hours. “This flyover is also to provide access to motorists exiting from Jalan Bukit Bintang. “It connects to MEX highway too,” he said. Shahidan added that plans were being made to link the flyover to the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway that was currently under construction. Launched on July 20, 2017, the RM492.5mil project was supposed to have been completed on July 8, 2019. However, the project experienced several delays, some of which were due to the movement control order in 2020 enforced to curb the spread of Covid-19. Oil prices rise on China demand recovery expectations, supply concerns
Source: Reuters Oil prices rose on Wednesday on expectations that easing COVID-19 restrictions in China will boost demand and as supply concerns grew. Brent crude was up $1.24 cents, or 1.1%, at $113.17 a barrel at 0921 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed $1.69 cents, or 1.5%, to $114.09 a barrel, reversing some of the previous session's losses. Hopes of further lockdown easing in China boosted expectations for demand recovery. The country's authorities allowed 864 of Shanghai's financial institutions to resume work, sources said on Wednesday, a day after the Chinese city achieved a milestone of three consecutive days with no new COVID-19 cases outside quarantine zones. The market also saw support from rising supply concerns. Russian crude output in April fell by nearly 9% from the previous month, an internal OPEC+ report showed on Tuesday, as Western sanctions on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine hit the top oil producer. The price … [Read more...] about Oil prices rise on China demand recovery expectations, supply concerns
How Shanghai residents are using Excel, job skills to navigate lockdown
The huge majority of Shanghai residents who have dodged COVID have not escaped the ordeal of lockdown. China's worst COVID-19 outbreak has frayed nerves and stirred resentment among many residents of Shanghai but some have thrived in the face of adversity, stepping up with bright ideas and commitment to help their communities through the crisis. Not surprisingly, many such people have used the skills they developed in their jobs to help others navigate the frightening new world of forced quarantine and lockdowns that no one dreamed of before COVID. Li Di, a senior executive with a global bank, knew he had to help when he was admitted to the Nanhui quarantine site in April, after testing positive for COVID, and was confronted by chaos. "There were only 120 to 150 staff to take care of 10,000 patients. The staff literally had their hands full," said Li. Li set up a team of more than a dozen volunteers to arrange meals, distribute various supplies and help elderly patients … [Read more...] about How Shanghai residents are using Excel, job skills to navigate lockdown
