Elon Musk’s 42,000 StarLink Satellites Could Just Save The World

January 9, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Elon Musk’s other company, SpaceX, is building Starlink, a global communications constellation that could approach a staggering 42,000 satellites . And it could be all that stands between us and a fragmented world living in virtually — and actually — different realities. How? World War II can tell us the answer. In the early 1940s a tyrannical power using fake news, hate speech, military might and hegemonic power controlled most of Europe: the Nazis. They controlled public life, news and local economies. Resistance groups dotted the European mainland, with one lifeline for non-official communication from free countries: radio. As such, radios were contraband and confiscated. One of the activities the allies undertook to support resistance fighters was shipping in radios for communication and outside news. Today, radios aren’t at risk of being confiscated. But the internet is. And as a … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s 42,000 StarLink Satellites Could Just Save The World

SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch Demonstration Could Cultivate Interest In An Air Tractor-Based Sky Warden

May 25, 2021 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In rural areas of Africa where U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) says it’s looking for an armed ISR airplane to replace the Pilatus PC-12-based UC-28 Dracos it currently flies, the Sky Warden wouldn’t look out of place. It’s based on Air Tractor’s familiar AT-802 agricultural application airplane. About 36 of these “crop dusters” already operate on the continent. That could be a factor in the selection of a Draco replacement if SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch acquisition gets funding. Earlier this month, SOCOM awarded five companies a total of $19.2 million to demonstrate potential low-cost aircraft to fly surveillance and deliver strikes in austere locations like Africa. The potential “armed overwatch” role such an airplane would fill is seen by some observers as an extension of the Air Force’s aborted Light Attack aircraft program (2009-2020). Congress was wary of that effort and views Armed Overwatch with a … [Read more...] about SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch Demonstration Could Cultivate Interest In An Air Tractor-Based Sky Warden

See Thursday’s Third, Final And Most Dramatic ‘Supermoon’ Of 2022 Rise Into Summer Skies

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If you want to see a full Moon rising in all of its glory, you have to get your timing absolutely right . However, if you want to see a “supermoon” appear in the east just after dusk then you need to be even more precise. Best seen this Thursday evening, this month’s full Moon is one of those rare supermoons, which only occur between two and four times per year. In fact, August’s “Sturgeon Moon” (yes, it’s a ridiculous name) is the final supermoon of 2022. The next one is an entire 12 months away. What are ‘supermooons?’ Supermoons occur because the Moon has a slightly elliptical orbit around earth. So there is a point every single month when it is at its closest to our planet and thus looks slightly larger in the sky. Emphasis on slightly. At about 7-14% larger, it's actually almost impossible to tell that a supermoon is bigger than a regular full Moon. Why this full Moon may be particularly dramatic … [Read more...] about See Thursday’s Third, Final And Most Dramatic ‘Supermoon’ Of 2022 Rise Into Summer Skies

SpaceX Starlink Space-Based Broadband Goes Live In Beta

October 28, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Following its successful launch of some 60 internet satellites on October 18, 2020, SpaceX has begun notifying customers that they can sign up as beta testers of the new service. Initially, those customers must live in northern states in the U.S. or in Canada. More areas will be added as the company launches additional satellites. The initial trial costs $99.00 per month . Customers must also purchase an equipment package for $499.00 that includes a phased-array downlink antenna, mounting hardware and a WiFi router. The test is called the “Better Than Nothing Beta” test in the SpaceX informal naming convention. And for many users, it’s far better than nothing. Current speeds are said to be 50 to 150 MBPS, with latency of 20 to 40 milliseconds according to an email sent by SpaceX to test users who are being invited to participate. Interested users can sign up on the Starlink website by entering their email address … [Read more...] about SpaceX Starlink Space-Based Broadband Goes Live In Beta

U.S. rejects broadband subsidies for SpaceX’s Starlink, LTD

August 11, 2022 by business.inquirer.net

SpaceX founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaks on a screen during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, June 29, 2021. REUTERS/Nacho Doce/File photo WASHINGTON  -The U.S. Federal Communications Commission rejected SpaceX’s Starlink and LTD Broadband’s applications for more than $2 billion in internet service subsidies, the FCC said on Wednesday. In December 2020, the FCC tentatively awarded $9.2 billion to more than 300 bidders to deploy high-speed broadband from the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. LTD Broadband won $1.32 billion and SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet network won $885.5 million in the 2020 auction. SpaceX, which is run by billionaire Elon Musk, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Starlink’s technology has real promise,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in a statement disclosing that the agency had rejected its long-form applications. But the FCC was hesitant to publicly subsidize Starlink’s developing technology, … [Read more...] about U.S. rejects broadband subsidies for SpaceX’s Starlink, LTD

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Wins $885 Million In FCC Subsidies To Give Rural Areas Broadband Access

December 7, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Elon Musk’s SpaceX won $885.5 million in subsidies from the Federal Communications Commission Monday to provide rural areas with high-speed internet through its Starlink satellite project, a major win for the Musk-led company and its first publicly announced major customer. Key Facts SpaceX was one of 180 companies who won a portion of FCC subsidies doled out via an auction to incentivize private companies to build out their networks in underserved areas of the country. SpaceX was the only satellite operator among the top four bidders by dollar amount, behind LTD Broadband, Charter Communications and Rural Electric Cooperative Consortium. The FCC says the money will allow SpaceX’s Starlink project to reach 35 states across 642,925 locations, while the only other satellite company to win subsidies in the auction, Maryland-based Hughes Network Systems, won $1.3 million serving 3,678 locations in one … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s SpaceX Wins $885 Million In FCC Subsidies To Give Rural Areas Broadband Access

How To Buy Better Time

August 3, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin All of us think that timing is exact, that it will always be there on our smartphones or watches. But these devices are not foolproof. Electromagnetic storms, foreign interference with satellites, and spoofing and jamming can all disrupt the timing streams sent to our computers and other devices. American Global Positioning System satellite navigation systems provide timing services, in addition to positioning information, through a constellation of satellites. The same GPS system that tells you where you are (using your car navigation system) also tells you the time. Just as interruptions to these satellite signals can affect how you perceive your location, they can also affect how your watch and smartphone tell you the time. Russia and China have demonstrated that they can take down satellites, enabling them to meddle with Americans’ perception of location and time. In July sunspots caused unusually-strong solar … [Read more...] about How To Buy Better Time
