Why 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki says the medical world is at a ‘tipping point’

March 13, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Consumers have more health power in their hands than ever before, but the medical system still needs to catch up when it comes to genomic medicine, 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki said during a panel Friday at the Fast Company Grill at SXSW. The consumer genetics and research company has been a leader in the space since its 2006 inception. Consumers have shown deep interest in the service but have often been shut down by medical professionals, who know little about the segment, Wojcicki said. She pointed toward a conference about 13 years ago, where 23andMe offered 1,000 testing kits and came home with 980. In contrast, the company recently conducted a survey that found roughly 90% of physicians are seeing an opportunity to deliver genetic information to patients and improve care. “I do really think that we’re at a tipping point now where the medical world is really interested in adopting genetic information, but they don’t have the training,” Wojcicki said. “There’s a lot … [Read more...] about Why 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki says the medical world is at a ‘tipping point’

TikTok CEO Dodges On Whether Company Will Cease ‘Spying’ On Americans

March 23, 2023 by dailycaller.com

TikTok CEO Shou Chew dodged questions Thursday about whether tactics by parent company ByteDance used to “spy” on American journalists could be used to target more Americans. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington questioned Chew on reporting by Forbes that staff at ByteDance used TikTok data last year to surveil journalists who were covering the company, gaining access to their IP addresses to track whether they had been in proximity to ByteDance employees. “TikTok spied on American journalists. Can you say with 100% certainty that neither ByteDance, nor TikTok employees, can target other Americans with similar surveillance?” TikTok CEO: “I disagree with the characterization that it was ‘spying.'” pic.twitter.com/EjWPzuvcec — RNC Research (@RNCResearch) March 23, 2023 “TikTok spied on American journalists. March 23, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew faced intense questioning from lawmakers in his first hearing before Congress Tuesday morning, defending the popular social media app and insisting it protects U.S. user data from foreign interference, though House members from both sides of the aisle remained skeptical of TikTok's plans as the Chinese-owned platform fights against a possible U.S. ban or forced sale. Key Facts Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.)—chair of the House Energy & Commerce Committee—asked about spying and surveillance on U.S. users by TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based tech company ByteDance, but Chew said he "disagrees with the characterization" that the social media platform is spying on American users and said TikTok is “committed” to protecting U.S. data from foreign access. Chew claimed in his testimony that he has “seen no evidence” of Chinese government officials accessing U.S. user data, … [Read more...] about TikTok CEO Spars With Congress Amid Growing Calls For Ban—As Lawmaker Calls Privacy Claims ‘Preposterous’

Rep. Gary Palmer Calls Out Smirking TikTok Lobbyist Sitting Directly Behind CEO

March 23, 2023 by dailycaller.com

Alabama Republican Rep. Gary Palmer called out a TikTok lobbyist and executive during Thursday’s hearing as he grilled the platform’s CEO. CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee amid pressure for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform. As Palmer questioned Chew, he called out TikTok executive Michael Beckerman for dodging questions about China’s ongoing genocide against Uyghur Muslims. Beckerman was confronted in December while on CNN about the genocide, with Beckerman refusing to acknowledge the Uyghur genocide and concentration camps. Beckerman also denied allegations TikTok was censoring posts about internment camps in Xinjiang. “Let me ask you this, Michael Beckerman, who’s your vice president and head of public policy for the America’s right, is he part of the team that’s helped you prepare for this meeting, yes or no?” Palmer asked. “Can I clarify who you mean?” Chew said. “Michael Beckerman.” “Yes, he is,” … [Read more...] about Rep. Yuan Strengthens Versus USD, Tencent Soars On Earnings

March 23, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key News Asian equities were mostly higher overnight as the Yuan and the Asia Dollar Index both gained significantly versus the US dollar. Xi Jinping returned to Beijing from Russia with some lower-level agreements, especially regarding the northern and eastern borders. I have not heard an update on Xi’s call with Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy, but we know that he is keen to meet with the Chinese president. Given his reticence about Xi’s visit to Moscow, we can assume that he is open to hearing Xi out. An end to the war could be a positive black swan for markets. Tencent’s over-the-counter ADR traded at a significant discount to its Hong Kong share class, which was up +8% overnight versus the ADR's only +2% gain yesterday. This echoes the continued disparity between US and global/China views of China. Tencent’s results were slightly lower than expected, but the company is rebounding in its advertising division after the … [Read more...] about Yuan Strengthens Versus USD, Tencent Soars On Earnings

POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB

March 22, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

The world watched in shock as Credit Suisse, one of the most established global banking and financial services institutions, collapsed and was eventually acquired by UBS. I believe a significant factor in Credit Suisse’s downfall was its rigid stance on forcing staff to return to the office. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder for business leaders to adapt to the changing world of work and prioritize their workforce’s needs and preferences. The Iron Fist: Credit Suisse’s return to office policy In stark contrast to the growing trend of many companies embracing a flexible hybrid work approach, Credit Suisse took a more traditional approach, mandating that staff return to the office three days a week. According to one banker there, “they’re removing our flexibility, and it doesn’t feel great.” In May 2022, the bank’s leadership originally supported flexibility and hybrid work as evidenced by then-CEO Thomas Gottstein professing that a return to office was “not … [Read more...] about POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB

It’s time to get intentional about what day of the week you hold meetings

March 22, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Each year, Frank Weishaupt, CEO of the AI-powered video conferencing solution provider Owl Labs, reviews last year’s calendar to see how he spent his time. The exercise can uncover areas that need improvement so you can be proactive with your priorities, he says. “Planning your weeks is incredibly important,” says Weishaupt. “Look at your activities and determine whether those activities match your goals. It’s a constant evaluation and optimization. If you’re not taking the time to do that, you know, you’re probably not using your time wisely.” Going into 2023, he decided to dramatically change how he schedules meetings. His first step was to make sure he was holding the right meetings. For example, some meetings had become routine, but they didn’t make sense anymore. If you’re not sure whether a meeting is worth holding or not, Weishaupt suggests flushing your calendar and starting over. “Then think about everything that’s coming your way,” he says. “I purged the … [Read more...] about It’s time to get intentional about what day of the week you hold meetings

GitHub launches its new GPT-4-powered Copilot coding assistant

March 22, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

GitHub begins rolling out a new GPT-4 -powered version of its Copilot coding assistant today. The new iteration expands the tool’s functionality to more phases of the code creation process. The original Copilot , launched in 2022, was based on the earlier GPT-3 model, and worked within the developer’s editor window to autocomplete lines or sections of code, or generate code based on plain language requests. “We’re bringing Copilot into every part of the developer experience,” says GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. “So, not just auto completion, but it will become part of every single step of the developer life cycle.” The new Copilot also brings with it a more ChatGPT-like experience. GitHub has integrated a chatbot into the editor environment in development tools such as VS Code and Visual Studio. Developer-users can interact with the Copilot chat interface using either text commands or voice commands. But this chatbot does more than just chat, Dohmke stresses. “It … [Read more...] about GitHub launches its new GPT-4-powered Copilot coding assistant

5 ways to cut down on meetings and make them more productive

November 3, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

There’s a common complaint in the workplace today: Employees’ schedules are often so packed with meetings that they have no time to do their actual jobs. Back in 2017, 71% of senior managers said that meetings were unproductive and inefficient; 65% reported that they got in the way of completing tasks. Since 2020, the problem has gotten worse. Research shows that with the rise of remote work, employees are spending more time in meetings and the workday has been extended by more than 45 minutes. This is unnecessary, and the good news is, it doesn’t have to be your team’s reality. I know this from experience. Running a $4-billion company with employees all around the world has forced me to rethink my approach to communication, and I encourage our leaders to do the same. By ensuring that every team has a deliberate, pared-down approach to meetings, we’ve increased productivity and boosted morale. Here are five strategies to help your team make the most of their … [Read more...] about 5 ways to cut down on meetings and make them more productive
