Google Play Bans Twitter Alternative Gab.ai App Over ‘Hate Speech’
Gab.ai, the social media platform that was built as an alternative to Twitter, was banned on Google’s Play Store Thursday. The move will make it impossible for users on Android phones and other Android-powered devices to use the app. According to Google Play Support, the app has been suspended and removed from Google Play as a “policy strike because it violates the hate speech policy” with links to the policy in question. In December, the app — which bills itself as more welcome to free speech than Twitter — was previously rejected by Apple’s App Store. Gab was told by Apple representatives that the application “includes pornographic content” posted by users — despite how Twitter also features similar user-generated content. The move to remove Gab from the Play Store follows in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia that left one woman dead. LINE app popular in Thailand warns users, look out for scams
LINE, a chat app popular in Thailand, is warning users to be on the lookout for scammers who might use SMS and LINE chat to steal personal information. The app said today that recently, some scammers claimed to be company officials, and posted job announcements via SMS and Line chat. LINE said that scammers are also adding people as ‘friends’ in order to steal their personal information, and hurting people and companies involved. The app tells users they can report scammers by clicking ‘Other settings’ and ‘Report’. “…we would like to ask Line users not to click on links with unknown origin or provide personal information through online channels without checking thoroughly.” This news comes after Thai police warned the public last month not to fall for so-called ‘deepfake’ scams . YouTube and TikTok logos MANILA, Philippines — Video streaming platforms YouTube and TikTok were the most popular mobile applications among Filipino youth between January and March, according to a report by Kaspersky. Thai-Chinese gang arrested for dating app scam at Chiang Mai’s luxury resort
Police yesterday revealed that a Thai-Chinese gang had been arrested in Chaing Mai for operating illegal dating scam activities after a tip off. Police apprehended 24 people after a member of the public alerted authorities to a group of Chinese men behaving suspiciously at the luxury Chaing Mai holiday resort. The gang included 20 Chinese and 4 Thai, 2 of the gang were women, three of the Thai criminals weren’t legally registered in the country, while the Chinese offenders were all in the country illegally. Director of Combating Transnational Criminal and Illegal Immigrants Center, Witsanu Prasartthong-o-sot, revealed that officers had been monitoring the actions of the group staying in Chiang Mai’s Fang district, and obtained a warrant from the court to search the premises of BK Resort and BK Coffee in Moo 7, Tambon Mae Soon, before making the arrests. Starting from June 9, downloading the “Plook Ganja” mobile application will be the only requirement to legally grow cannabis and hemp plants at home in Thailand. Today, the Ministry of Public Health announced that all parts of marijuana and hemp plants will be delisted as a narcotic from June 9, except for extracts containing more than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which are still considered illegal category 5 narcotics. The Thai government expects cannabis growers to use parts of the plant in cooking, e.g. boiling the leaves to use in Tom Yam soup, or for “medicinal purposes.” However, rolling up and smoking high-grade THC marijuana flowers is still very much illegal in Thailand.
