WeChat: China’s Other Trojan Horse

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Momentum is growing behind a bill in Congress to do what we’ve been arguing for in this column for close to two years, i.e. banning Chinese social media app TikTok. It’s the app that some term China’s “Trojan horse” for inserting Beijing’s control over U.S. user’s data and hearts and minds. At the same time, China’s other social media Trojan Horse, WeChat, and its parent company Tencent, have been getting a lot less attention. When the Trump administration banned TikTok from U.S. markets in 2020—a ban which a federal judge blocked and then the Biden administration reversed—the executive order included another Chinese social media app, WeChat. While not as psychologically menacing as the TikTok app with its invasive ByteDance algorithms, WeChat may pose an even greater danger from the angle that alarmed government officials from the very start, as an app that gives the Chinese government direct access to user data in the US. … [Read more...] about WeChat: China’s Other Trojan Horse

New Dashboard Shows Key Health Measures In Each Of 435 Congressional Districts

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Wondering whether your Congressperson is actually doing a good job? Is there some type of metric besides number of times the Congressperson tweeted expressions of outrage and used ALL CAPS? Well, it could help to see what’s really happening with the health of people in your Congressional District. After all, improving the lives of people in the district is kind of what a House of Representatives person is supposed to do, right? Say, for example, more people in your District are binge drinking than any other District. You may, in turn, be inclined to tell your Congressperson, “Maybe it’s time to bottle up the rhetoric and figure out what’s going on here” That’s why the new Congressional District Health Dashboard (CDHD) , just launched by a team from the New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, can be a useful tool to help separate out the Congresspersons … [Read more...] about New Dashboard Shows Key Health Measures In Each Of 435 Congressional Districts

Dying For The Perfect Photo Or Video – Is Social Media Claiming Lives?

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Twenty-seven-year-old Edgar Garay was killed after he fell from a cliff in Puerto Rico last Sunday while attempting to film a social media video for TikTok. He is sadly among the latest person to be killed while trying to stage a perfect photo or video. A 2018 study conducted by Indian researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences found that 259 people had died between 2011 and 2017 while trying to take "extreme selfies" with their phones. These have included falls from the tops of mountains, cliff sides, and even tall buildings; while others have been swept away by water currents, and more than a few were killed by wild animals. In one case, a pair of Russian soldiers had posed with a live grenade that suddenly went off, while a teenage Romanian girl tried to take an "ultimate selfie" from the top of a moving train only to come in contact with a live wire. It is also a global phenomenon – with … [Read more...] about Dying For The Perfect Photo Or Video – Is Social Media Claiming Lives?

Former Russian Billionaire Mysteriously Died Last Year. Now His Family Is Feuding Over His Fortune

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On December 4, real estate baron Dmitry Zelenov became one of the latest Russian oligarchs to mysteriously pass away after he got ill during a dinner party in the French Riviera, fell over a stair railing and succumbed to critical head injuries. Though they suspect no wrongdoing, French police are still investigating Zelenov's unusual and untimely death. At just 50 years old, Zelenov left behind a wife and four children (his family learned of one minor after his death)—but no will or estate plan to divvy up his assets. Less than two months later, some of his family members say they've been locked out of his fortune. According to a complaint filed in Florida court on January 24, Zelenov's widow, Natalia Dvoryanynova, and their adult son, Michael Zelenov, have filed suit against Dmitry Zelenov’s parents, adult daughter and financial advisor, for allegedly trying to disinherit them from some of Zelenov’s biggest assets … [Read more...] about Former Russian Billionaire Mysteriously Died Last Year. The Best High Chairs Tested To Ensure Proper Seating For Babies And Tots

January 30, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The best high chairs boast bells and whistles that our grandparents never dreamed of, and yet, the best ones continue to deliver in a few key areas: durability, cleanability and the best positioning for children. After testing 10 high chairs over several weeks and researching many other bestsellers, I found the Graco Blossom 6-in-1 to be the best high chair overall considering how easy it was to clean, adjust, buckle and use. Not only does it support the baby in a proper eating position, but the tray is removable with an easy one-handed motion. Another favorite was the Peg Perego Siesta as the best splurge high chair. If you’re willing to spend another hundred dollars (or $200, depending on sales and colors), you’ll gain a few more features in the Peg Perego, including the ability to fold it for storage and a slightly elevated look. (Read my in-depth reviews of the Graco Blossom and the Peg Perego Siesta .) Then there … [Read more...] about The Best High Chairs Tested To Ensure Proper Seating For Babies And Tots

NBA’s Extension Rules Could Force Toronto Raptors To Consider Trading O.G. Anunoby

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Toronto Raptors are facing a conundrum with O.G. Anunoby leading up to the Feb. 9 NBA trade deadline. Anunoby is currently averaging 16.9 points on 45.7 percent shooting, 5.5 rebounds and a league-leading 2.1 steals per game. He's also one of the league's best, most versatile defenders, as evidenced by his third-place rank in Dunks and Threes' defensive estimated plus/minus. However, Anunoby is a virtual lock to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024 by declining his $19.9 million player option for the 2024-25 season. As they ponder a larger-scale shakeup , the Raptors might have to consider preemptively trading Anunoby before he's able to become a free agent. They can thank the NBA's extension rules for that. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, teams can offer no more than 120 percent of a player's previous salary or 120 percent of the league's estimated average salary … [Read more...] about NBA’s Extension Rules Could Force Toronto Raptors To Consider Trading O.G.
