Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Close to 1,000 Americans from across the spectrum of politics, business, journalism, entertainment, faith and advocacy have been permanently banned from entering Russia , a largely symbolic move that has generated a lot of buzz about those included, and excluded. The 963 citizens, including president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris—and her husband, Doug Emhoff —were named by Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Saturday to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “blacklist,” or what one translation called a “stop list.” It’s all in response to the United States’ historic sanctions and its humanitarian and military support of Ukraine, nearly three months into Moscow’s invasion. “In the context of response to the constantly imposed anti-Russian sanctions by the United States and in connection with incoming requests about the personal composition of our national ‘stop list,’ the Russian Foreign Ministry … [Read more...] about Who’s On Vladimir Putin’s ‘Blacklist’? Two Years After George Floyd, Black Leaders Reflect On Change
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd died before our eyes as a police officer knelt on his neck for approximately 9 minutes on a street in Minneapolis. Had Darnella Frazier, then 17, not captured the murder on her cell phone and posted it to Facebook, Floyd would have been yet another Black man to die in police custody – a statistic. Instead, George Floyd became a powerful symbol of persistent inequality and systemic injustice against Black Americans and a wake-up call for all. The response was historic – from the scores of leaders making forceful statements every day about racial justice to the $50 billion that U.S. companies pledged (but not necessarily paid) to support Black communities. To understand the complexities of where we stand as a nation, though, look no further than the racially motivated mass murder at a Buffalo grocery store on May 14. In an effort to capture the reality of being Black in America, we decided that we wanted to hear from leaders in the community. Here are … [Read more...] about Two Years After George Floyd, Black Leaders Reflect On Change
The Surprising Way Companies Like Netflix and Amazon Do Market Research
So far in this eight part series titled "8 Reasons Subscribers Are Better Than Customers," we've seen how subscribers boost the value of your company , increase the life time value of a customer and smooth out demand . Today, we look at how the subscription business model gets you closer to your customers--for free. In a traditional business, the customer buys your product or service once and it is up to you to try and convince them to buy again in the future. You often have no idea if they liked what they bought and what would have made them buy more so you're left having to guess or invest in costly market research. In a subscription business, you have what I call "Automatic Customers" who agree to purchase from you into the future as long as you keep providing your service or product. Through the research for my new book , I've discovered there are nine different subscription models that are leveraged by everyone from accounting firms to art teachers to better … [Read more...] about The Surprising Way Companies Like Netflix and Amazon Do Market Research
Congress defers canvassing of votes from Surigao del Sur due to missing COCs
FILE PHOTO: The plenary hall of the Batasang Pambansa. Screenshot from RTVM Youtube Live MANILA, Philippines — The two chambers of Congress, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), on Tuesday night suspended the canvassing of votes for president and vice president from Surigao del Sur due to missing certificates of canvass (COCs). During the proceedings, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said the COCs from Surigao del Sur that were supposedly inside the ballot boxes transmitted to the Senate were missing. He also said that what Congress has is just the electronically transferred COCs. Congress then directed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to explain “within the hour” the case of missing COCs. “What you’re saying is we have the electronically transferred COCs but the manually transported COCs to the Senate, when the boxes were opened, do not contain the COCs for president and vice president for canvass for the province of Surigao del Sur,” Zubiri said. … [Read more...] about Congress defers canvassing of votes from Surigao del Sur due to missing COCs
Biden’s latest Taiwan gaffe stokes tensions with Beijing
- A + A (May 24): President Joe Biden is seeking to show US resolve against China, yet an ill-timed gaffe on Taiwan risks undermining his bid to curb Beijing’s growing influence over the region. Whether intentional or not, Biden provoked China with a vow to defend Taiwan militarily. After saying that US policy on Taiwan “had not changed at all” during a news conference in Tokyo, he then answered “yes” when asked if the US would act “militarily” to defend the island in the event of a Chinese attack. “It’s a commitment we made,” Biden added. White House officials later walked back the remark, saying the president was only promising US aid to help Taiwan defend itself in the event of hostilities. That would be akin to what the US is doing in Ukraine, where Biden has vowed not to send troops. “The policy has not changed at all, and I stated that when I made my statement,” Biden said Tuesday when pressed by reporters to clarify the US position. The president’s … [Read more...] about Biden’s latest Taiwan gaffe stokes tensions with Beijing

Duncan Taylor Releases 50- And 51-Year-Old Whiskies From Caperdonich And Kinclaith
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky , one of Scotland’s legendary independent bottlers, has released two exceptional, ultra-aged whiskies as part of their “Rarest of the Rare” portfolio. The Kinclaith 51-year-old and Caperdonich 50-year-old both date back to 1969. They form part of a collection of rare whisky casks from closed distilleries, which Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has matured in their warehouse for half a century. Both whiskies come from what the Scotch whisky industry terms “lost distilleries” - these are distilleries that have been closed and subsequently demolished. Kinclaith’s existence ended in 1975 and the production of Caperdonich from Rothes finished in 2002. Once the existing stock of whisky is depleted, it will never be available again. Kinclaith’s origins date back to 1957. Located on the south side of the river Clyde, this small malt distillery was located within the grounds of the massive … [Read more...] about Duncan Taylor Releases 50- And 51-Year-Old Whiskies From Caperdonich And Kinclaith
Activists pushed the IRS to drop facial recognition. They won, but they’re not done yet
(CNN) In mid-February, privacy and digital rights activists were buzzing about a recent victory: Earlier in the month, the Internal Revenue Service said it would back away from a controversial plan to force taxpayers to use facial-recognition software before they could log in to its website. "This has definitely been a major team effort — the hook, right, left uppercut," Joy Buolamwini, the founder and executive director of the Algorithmic Justice League, said excitedly during a Twitter Spaces session. "So many people coming together for this win." In addition to the Algorithmic Justice League, which raises awareness of the consequences of artificial intelligence, these people came from groups such as Fight for the Future, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the American Civil Liberties Union. All have been vociferous critics of the IRS in recent months, contacting reporters and urging individuals, legislators, and the IRS itself to halt a plan that, starting this … [Read more...] about Activists pushed the IRS to drop facial recognition. Q&A: John Legend On Activism, His New Album, Playing Live And Marvin Gaye
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At only 43, John Legend has accomplished an incredible amount already in his career. He was the first Black man and youngest artist ever to achieve the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). For Legend, all of that success was so he could make a difference in the world. As he recalled when we spoke over Zoom last week he won an essay contest at 15 by saying he would become a famous musician use that fame to make the world a better place. He is helping do that this Memorial Day Weekend when he will headline the Northwell Health "Side By Side" benefit show this Saturday, May 29, at New York's UBS Arena. Legend will perform with Jason DeRulo at a gig that raises money for healthcare services for veterans and their families. I spoke with Legend about why it was especially important for him to support our military during these difficult times, his love of playing life, how artists like Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder and … [Read more...] about Q&A: John Legend On Activism, His New Album, Playing Live And Marvin Gaye
When It Pays to Have an Ugly Website
When Wikipedia revealed its massive website redesign last week, not everyone was thrilled. One reader called the new columns "ludicrously narrow," while another said an image surrounded by white space was "a really bad idea." The larger font and pictures looked nice, but Wikipedia's users liked the old site design , thank you very much--the one that hasn't changed much since the site launched in 2001. Craigslist is another example of a site that refuses to update its look and feel. It relies on email to correspond with users, even in the era of SMS and social networks, and has rarely, if ever, changed its text-heavy design. You can add Drudge Report and Amazon to the same list. These sites might be ignoring design innovation but they seem to be doing just fine. "The desire to redesign or change often comes from the internal people wanting to mix it up or remind people they're out there ," says designer Shane Mielke, who's worked on campaigns for Mazda and Call of … [Read more...] about When It Pays to Have an Ugly Website
