- A + A CANBERRA (June 23): A landmark inquiry into Australia's mining sector has uncovered dozens of shocking cases of sexual harassment and abuse of women workers at companies including BHP Group and Rio Tinto Group. The Western Australia government report released on Thursday described "horrific" incidents at the workplaces, which it labelled both a failure of the industry and an oversight by government. Among recommendations were the payment of compensation to the many workers who became victims of bosses and colleagues on remote projects. "I was shocked and appalled well beyond expectation by the size and depth of the problem," Libby Mettam, chair of the inquiry, said in the report. "To hear the lived reality of the taunts, attacks, and targeted violence, the devastation and despair the victims experienced, the threats to or loss of their livelihood that resulted was shattering and completely inexcusable." US prosecutors seek jail term of 30 to 55 years for Ghislaine Maxwell
- A + A NEW YORK (June 23): Ghislaine Maxwell should be sentenced to between 30 and 55 years in prison after being convicted of helping the sex offender and globetrotting financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls, US prosecutors said on Wednesday. Maxwell, 60, was convicted in December by a federal jury on five charges, including sex trafficking, for recruiting and grooming four girls between 1994 and 2004 for sexual encounters with Epstein, then her boyfriend. In a sentencing memorandum filed in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors called Maxwell's conduct "shockingly predatory." "She was a calculating, sophisticated, and dangerous criminal who preyed on vulnerable young girls and groomed them for sexual abuse," they wrote. "Her practice of targeting vulnerable victims reflects her view that struggling young girls could be treated like disposable objects." Circuit Judge Alison Nathan, who presided over Maxwell's four-week trial before being … [Read more...] about US prosecutors seek jail term of 30 to 55 years for Ghislaine Maxwell
Elizabeth Holmes sentencing hearing set for September 26
(CNN Business) Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos who was convicted earlier this month on four out of 11 federal fraud and conspiracy charges, will not be sentenced until September 26, according to a new filing. The prosecution and defense had proposed September 12 for a sentencing hearing in a court filing Tuesday, stating in the filing that "following Labor Day 2022 would be appropriate in light of ongoing proceedings in a related matter," a reference to the upcoming trial of Holmes' second-in-command at Theranos who faces the same charges as her. In a court order signed Wednesday, Judge Edward Davila, who is presiding over Holmes' case, set her sentencing hearing for later in September. By that point, it will have been more than a full year since her trial kicked off. Until then, Holmes remains free on a $500,000 bond secured by property, according to the earlier filing from the prosecution and defense. CREATING CONTENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Most producers focus on producing content for full-length films or television series, which creates a glut of producers (supply) compared to potential distributors of that content (demand). This imbalance leads to inevitable results under the law of supply and demand, putting producers at a distinct disadvantage. Given the bourgeoning means of distribution in this digital age, producers would gain an advantage if they focused on creating content for alternative platforms. I routinely hear from budding producers with grand plans for the next “Star Wars” franchise before they get their feet wet with smaller projects, which is just not going to happen. If they gained traction and credibility by proving their chops by producing content for alternative platforms, they would have more leverage in later creating film and TV content if that is their desire. One way to gain traction is to create shorts that can be shown on social … [Read more...] about CREATING CONTENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA

The arrests followed a police raid on the area. The couple were brought to the local police station. While her boyfriend was beaten and tortured in a separate cell, Adinda was blindfolded, drugged and gang-raped by police officers over four days. The police demanded Rp95 million (US$6,500) to end her ordeal and drop all charges – an unfathomable amount for someone earning below the poverty line in Indonesia. My latest research shows that experiences similar to Adinda’s rape, physical abuse and extortion at the hands of police officers are rampant in Indonesia. … [Read more...] about Research shows how Indonesia’s drug control victimizes women and puts their health at risk
