Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Global surveillance is increasing, with governments requesting almost 40 per cent more user data from Apple, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft during 2020 than in the year before. According to a report from privacy firm Surfshark, the US topped the list, with nearly two million user accounts affected since 2013 and 469,000 in 2020 alone. This represents a little over 585 accounts per 100,000 population. Second on the list was Germany, with 489 requests per 100,000, followed by the UK, with 486. Singapore and France round out the top five. Anti-party-hopping law expected to be enforced by mid-September, says Wan Junaidi
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): The constitutional amendments to prohibit Members of Parliament (MPs) from switching parties are expected to be enforced in the middle of September at the latest, said Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) said this expectation is consistent with the timeline set out on the tabling and approval of the constitution amendment Bill, which requires the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. “I am very confident that His Majesty is sensitive to this Bill, and if my reading is right, not later than middle of September (its enforcement). “Of course, we are hoping (for it to be enforced before the 15th general election). I can’t predict but once we have sent to Istana, we need to give time to His Majesty to study the Bill before giving his consent,” he told a press conference at Parliament building on Tuesday (Aug 9). The hidden cost of free lunches
A crowd at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh. (Image Source: AP/File photo) The prime minister has set the cat among the pigeons, with his fusillade against election freebies while inaugurating the Bundelkhand expressway. He said the culture of garnering votes by promising freebies harms the country’s economic development and warned the youth, ‘Your present will be lost and your future pushed into darkness.’ Those who believe in distributing freebies, he said, would never build infrastructure, sorely needed for securing the country’s future. That little speech succinctly lays out the rationale against populism---it promises instant gratification, at the cost of future penury. Predictably, the speech drew the ire of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, who defended his trademark policy of giving away free power. His promise of giving 300 units of free power to each household if his party wins the Gujarat elections is estimated to cost the state Rs 8700 crore a year. It is policies such as … [Read more...] about The hidden cost of free lunches
Women will be inducted in Maha Cabinet in next expansion: Devendra Fadnavis
Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis (File image) Facing flak over non-representation of women in Maharashtra's expanded Cabinet, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said female legislators will be surely inducted in the ministry in the next round of expansion. Forty-one days after taking oath, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde earlier in the day expanded his cabinet by inducting 18 new members – nine each of the rebel Shiv Sena group and the BJP – but no woman legislator found a place in his team, inviting criticism from opposition parties and activists. With the expansion, the strength of the Shinde ministry has gone up to 20.Responding to the criticism, Fadnavis said in Mumbai, There will be women in the next cabinet expansion for sure. Earlier, people were critical of us for delay in the cabinet expansion, but now they have come up with something new. When Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray-led government had taken oath (in November 2019), there was not a … [Read more...] about Women will be inducted in Maha Cabinet in next expansion: Devendra Fadnavis
China, Taipei battle over projecting soft-power through Mandarin
US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (left) with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen. (Image: AP) As tension rises in the Taiwan Strait following China’s threatening live-fire drills in the wake of Nancy Pelosi’s visit, a tussle between Taiwan and the mainland to influence the world through Mandarin learning centres has come back in focus. Mandarin is spoken widely on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. But as Sino-American relations became strained over trade and technology in the past few years, Washington made a conscious effort to curb Chinese cultural activities in the United States and encouraged Taiwan to fill that space, especially for learning Mandarin. Under Donald Trump’s presidency, the US Congress in 2018 passed a bill to cut funding for Chinese language and culture programmes offered by Confucius institutes at universities that host them. The US State Department labelled the institutes `foreign missions’ of the People’s Republic of China, and part … [Read more...] about China, Taipei battle over projecting soft-power through Mandarin
