Make that four weeks in a row of gains for the U.S. stock market, as the rally has become undeniable. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both climbed more than 3% last week, with the the Dow up 2.9%. The S&P 500 has now climbed 15% from its lows in mid-June, while the Nasdaq has clawed back 20% since then. That could technically be described as a new bull market for the index. A 20% retracement from a recent low fits the bill—or the bull—but there are a lot of opinions about that. But we can't deny the strength of the rally, especially when we dig into the charts. The average stock in the Nasdaq Composite index is up 34% from its lows. Remember, just a few months ago, we were talking about the average Nasdaq stock being down 50% from its highs. The pendulum has swung back in a big way. Across the market, the breadth thrust has been pretty impressive. And no, that's not a swimming stroke. The breath trust indicator is a technical indicator used to ascertain market momentum … [Read more...] about Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals

‘The Last Movie Stars’: The Coveted HBO Max Limited Documentary Series Appeals To All Ages
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As cultures and communities evolve, TV and streaming genres do as well. So, it is particularly refreshing to see how positively the audience (and the critics) have responded to HBO Max’s limited documentary series The Last Movie Stars . Designed both as a showcase for the older generation familiar with the body of work on film by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and for the younger generation, perhaps, not as aware of them (if at all), The Last Movie Stars breaks the stereotype that viewers of a specific age range will only consume certain types of content. Fans and viewers of all ages have responded to this documentary tale of these two film legends who, surprisingly, kept much of their lives private. “They had love, they had family, and they were ethical citizens,” noted director Ethan Hawke in the film, who in this six-part tour de force assembles a wide array of celebrities (including George Clooney as Paul Newman … [Read more...] about ‘The Last Movie Stars’: The Coveted HBO Max Limited Documentary Series Appeals To All Ages

Books as enemy of the state?
For the third time in the last six months, books have been the target of Red-tagging by certain peripheral government agencies. The latest is the move last week by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) stopping the publication of three books and the distribution of two more for allegedly being “subversive” and for promoting “antigovernment ideologies.” In March, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-Elcac) was blamed for the spray-painting of anticommunist slogans at Solidaridad and Popular bookstores. In May, it was the turn of Adarna House, whose bundle of children’s books on martial law was accused by the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency of trying to “subtly radicalize the Filipino children against our government.” Last year, several reading materials were removed from the libraries of state universities—Kalinga State University, Isabela State University, and Aklan State University—for allegedly having references to communism and socialism. … [Read more...] about Books as enemy of the state?
Organic Reach in a Free Fall? Here’s Exactly Where You Should Spend Your Social Media Budget
In case you hadn't heard, consumers love Instagram Stories. And because of that, brands do too. There are over 500 million daily active Stories users worldwide . Younger users are particularly active on the platform: 59 percent of millennials and 70 percent of Gen Z watch stories, and many engage with brands by swiping up on content and clicking through to shop. For those new to the platform, Instagram Stories are images and videos located at the top of the Instagram app that last for 24-hours then disappear. When users finish a story, the next one starts playing immediately. The nature of IG stories--one image or clip appearing on your screen right after the other, makes the medium ideal for advertising. Since the ads flow along with the organic content, some users don't even realize they are watching them at all. Others actually welcome the interaction from brands that they like. A recent study reveals that a quarter of millennials and Gen Z check out IG … [Read more...] about Organic Reach in a Free Fall? Here’s Exactly Where You Should Spend Your Social Media Budget
