Viral Video: Japanese Supercomputer Shows How Coronavirus Spreads In A Dining Setting
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its guidance to say that the Covid-19 virus can “linger in the air for minutes to hours” and occur between people spaced more than six feet apart. This followed a CDC study last month that found that adults with Covid-19 were twice as likely to have dined out at a restaurant within two weeks prior to being infected. A new simulation from the Fugaku supercomputer in Japan demonstrates how the seating arrangement can make a difference to how easily the coronavirus is transmitted to dining companions at the same table. Japanese researchers from Kobe University and the research giant Riken tasked Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, to model how the coronavirus spreads in a typical dining situation. The simulation shows the emission and flow of aerosol particles when four people are sitting a table and speaking … [Read more...] about Viral Video: Japanese Supercomputer Shows How Coronavirus Spreads In A Dining Setting

German Surfer Breaks World Record For Biggest Wave Ever Surfed
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For the uninitiated it would be easy to guess the biggest waves in the world likely break off the shores of Hawaii or perhaps Australia. But over the last ten or so years, a wave known as Nazaré (pronounced ‘Naz-a-ray’) located off the beach of Praia do Norte in a picturesque town on Portugal’s rugged west coast has been drawing the best big wave surfers in the world like moths to the proverbial flame – or in this case, inferno. Nazaré is a true monster – the wave it’s claimed is most likely to break the magical one-hundred-foot-high barrier that has long been the Holy Grail of big wave surfing. It is a freak of nature created by the Canhão da Nazaré , the largest underwater canyon in Europe. Reaching depths of 16,500 feet, the canyon tapers to a point as it meets land, funneling the swells that have been building and traveling through the Atlantic Ocean upwards into gargantuan towers of water that, when they crest, have … [Read more...] about German Surfer Breaks World Record For Biggest Wave Ever Surfed
See Why The Biggest Wave Ever Surfed Is Not All It Seems
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Everyone loves a beach vacation, right? And while for some it’s all about lying back with a cold cocktail and good book, others like to take a more… active approach. One such person is certified Brazilian hellman Rodrigo Koxa who earlier this year was inducted into the Guinness Book of Records for an 80-foot wave he rode off the coast of Portugal in late 2017. On November 8th, as an unprecedented and massive swell started pounding the cliffs at Nazare, Koxa climbed into his wetsuit, motored out into the most alien environment on Earth with his waveski driver Sergio Cosme and hurled himself down the face of a moving mountain. Human characteristics like “empathy and affect” are key for building trust with people, he added. “These attributes have become more important in these times of the ongoing pandemic, when so many of us have lost someone we love,” he said. “While AI can’t eliminate that pain of loss, it can definitely make their memories last.” ALSO READ: Amazon has a plan to make Alexa mimic … [Read more...] about Amazon’s Alexa impersonates grandma, creeping out Internet
Poaching and coaching in Kota: Race for $500 million education hub heats up
Hemant Kumar Bhadoriya (name changed) was travelling in a chauffeur-driven sports utility vehicle on a Saturday afternoon in Kota, seemingly headed to Jaipur, where people typically go on weekend getaways. Unlike the others, though, Bhadoriya was not out on a leisure drive. Neither was he actually going to Jaipur. He was, in fact, just sitting in the car and talking about money. Crores of rupees. Bhadoriya is not a lawyer or an investment banker. Neither does he deal in illegal activities. He is a maths teacher at Kota’s top coaching centre and was negotiating with a potential employer, one of the country’s biggest edtech companies. The edtech startup had offered him a 40 percent hike on his existing salary of Rs 1.65 crore. “At first, I was shocked and a bit sceptical when I heard about the offer as every day we have been reading about how hundreds of employees were getting laid off by startups,” said Bhadoriya, 46. “But then it was for their offline classes and I have been … [Read more...] about Poaching and coaching in Kota: Race for $500 million education hub heats up

Since Title IX there have been significant strides for women, including recent achievements like the overall college enrollment rate for 18- to 24-year-olds being higher for women than for men since 2000. The intentions of Title IX are noble and there should be no doubt that this law has made an indelible mark on generations of women and girls. At the same time, we must also reflect on whether Title IX is fulfilling its promise of protecting women from discrimination and underrepresentation in their educational and … [Read more...] about Title IX At 50: Are Women And Girls Being Treated Equally?
