A family has paid tribute to a passionate fisherman and motorcyclist with a heart of gold, who died on Father's Day.Grandad Barry John White was rushed to hospital after a crash outside Cobtree Manor Park in May. The Burham father-of-two died two weeks later at King's College Hospital on June 16.His daughters have shared a moving tribute to the 71-year-old, who leaves behind an older brother and three grandchildren.It reads: "Our dad wasn't a person you could sum up in a few words. He was a multifaceted character who would do anything for anyone and always offer help and advice when he could."We haven't heard anything other than kind words about him, even being told how he helped people to turn their lives around and aspire to be better people. It's more than 10 years since Austria opened the door to a new generation of voters, allowing sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds to choose their representatives at all levels of government. In March this year, Malta lowered its general voting age from 18 to 16, becoming the second European Union country to do so at national level. In Germany, local elections in ten federal Bundesländer-states include under 18s, as do regional polls in Estonia and Scotland. Ireland could become the next country to lower the voting age, according to Tamara Ehs chairwoman of the Austrian interest group "IG Demokratie". A pan European change? A couple of years ago, the European Parliament passed a resolution calling for a lower voting age throughout the EU. In June, an amendment to the European electoral law was adopted to this effect, which includes a general recommendation to lower the voting age. The head of a Los Angeles County business organization has accused a high-level advisor to Mayor Eric Garcetti of threatening to punish her group over its opposition to a tax proposal supported by the mayor.The proposal — Measure EE on the June ballot — would raise money for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Garcetti has made passage of Measure EE a priority.Tracy Hernandez, founding chief executive of the Los Angeles County Business Federation, known as BizFed, said Measure EE campaign manager Rick Jacobs told her during a phone call last month that BizFed members who campaign against the measure won’t do any business in the city of L.A. for the next four years.Hernandez said she took the comment to mean that BizFed members would be blocked from getting things done at City Hall. But Amanda Lumley doesn’t think people know the true story. And now, with the 400th anniversary coming up next year, Lumley says telling the breadth of all of it — from the Pilgrims’ time across the pond to their first interactions with the Wampanoag tribe — will be a core focus of a series of commemorative events. “We want people to understand it was not as straightforward as a lot of people wanted to leave and they got on a ship,” said Lumley, chief executive of Destination Plymouth, in Plymouth, England.
