By Dan Neil WSJ Andy Pasztor WSJ Thu., April 11, 2019 After spending the past decade eclipsed by the exploits of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space company is over being small and done with being quiet. Ten years ago the company consisted of the Amazon magnate himself, a few researchers and an experimental lander that fit on a flatbed truck. There was no sign outside its industrial park headquarters in a Seattle suburb, and the boss didn’t talk to the media, period. Today the company—funded by Mr. Bezos to the tune of $1 billion a year—employs more than 2,000 people at five sites, including a launch facility in West Texas where later this year it will begin manned tests of its suborbital space tourism rocket, named New Shepard, in honor of American space pioneer Alan Shepard. Blue Origin’s next project literally dwarfs New Shepard: the mighty New Glenn, a 300-foot orbital, reusable rocket, due to fly first in … [Read more...] about Can Jeff Bezos Make Money in Space?

Over 1 million American households took the plunge in the third quarter of last year. In the fourth quarter, the total number of pay-TV households dropped 4.1 percent. Experts say the cable TV companies are bracing for a grim 2019.Me, I’m not feeling so grim. I disconnected from Comcast/Xfinity last month and couldn’t be happier. The average cable bill, per Fortune magazine, was $107 in 2018, but if you want any sort of extras, premium services, specialty tiers, or extra cable boxes, the cost can escalate quickly. I’d been a Comcast customer since returning to the Boston area in 2002 and as of … [Read more...] about Thinking about cord-cutting? Our film writer did it. Here’s what he found out

Amazon There are hundreds of high-quality routers on the market, and if you are using a model that was supplied by your internet service provider, you are missing out. When you get down to the nuts and bolts of the Linksys Max Stream EA7500, it is packed full of features that allow you to use several devices running high-bandwidth applications. I especially like that the Linksys app gives you control over which devices get priority, when devices can access the internet, which websites they can access, and managing passwords. Though it isn’t the cheapest on the market, the Max Stream EA7500 has a mid-range price (currently $139.99 on Amazon) while providing high-end features. If you are reading this, chances are you are having … [Read more...] about I no longer have to worry about my Wi-Fi speeds now that I have this blazing-fast $140 router
NASA’s New Horizons probe successfully flew past a space rock called Ultima Thule, also known as 2014 MU69, on New Year’s Day. Ultima Thule, which is 4 billion miles from Earth (and 1 billion miles beyond Pluto), is now the most distant object humanity has ever visited. The nuclear-powered spacecraft recorded hundreds photos of Ultima Thule, and it will beam that data home over ther next two years. The flyby may reveal secrets of how planets in our solar system formed some 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists just flew NASA’s nuclear-powered New Horizons probe past a mysterious, mountain-size rock beyond the orbit of Pluto. The object – called Ultima Thule (pronounced “tool-ee”) – is located more than 4 billion miles from Earth. It’s 1 billion miles beyond Pluto, which New Horizons visited in July 2015. The spacecraft phoned home at 10:39 a.m. EST, confirming it wasn’t destroyed by the manoeuvre. This makes Ultima Thule the … [Read more...] about NASA just pulled off humanity’s farthest-ever visit to a space object — the New Horizons probe’s successfully flew by Ultima Thule
