(Honda) Honda The dogged persistence Honda has shown in its decades-long quest to perfect hydrogen as a zero-emission replacement for gasoline can be seen as quixotic or futile. But the quirky company that makes motorcycles, lawnmowers, jets, humanoid robots, boat engines and a few million cars soldiers on, along with GM, Toyota and Hyundai, in the face of haphazard government support for hydrogen, minimal consumer awareness and withering critics like Elon Musk , a tireless advocate for Tesla’s battery-powered cars. All the sweat equity Honda engineers have invested in its fuel cell program, year after year, has yielded a remarkable new version of the Clarity sedan, the most compelling argument yet for the potential hydrogen cars still hold. Yet for all its technological sophistication, … [Read more...] about Honda’s Dogged Hydrogen Push Yields A Remarkable New Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan

Taking A Closer Look At Molnupiravir. Is Continued Use Justified?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This article is part of a larger series on the risks of molnupiravir. For a summary of the risks at the level of the individual, see here , and for an overview of the risks on a societal level, see here . Mutations to the SARS-CoV-2 genome, especially in the spike protein, help the virus elude vaccines, natural immunity, and monoclonal antibody treatments. Such mutations can also help improve viral fitness, including quicker viral replication, shorter incubation periods, and increased immunosuppressive capabilities. Together, these issues pose a serious challenge to pandemic control. One potential area of hope are antiviral drugs. Unfortunately, none of our current options are effective in preventing infection. In fact, one of the more widely-used drugs against Covid-19 —molnupiravir— may supercharge viral mutation and spawn new variants. When I first voiced this concern , it was sidelined as largely … [Read more...] about Taking A Closer Look At Molnupiravir. Is Continued Use Justified?

It’s A Gas: Hyundai Hopes To Regain Hydrogen Leadership With Futuristic New SUV
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hyundai Motor reveals its new FE Fuel Cell Concept, indicating the design direction for the ... [+] automaker's new fuel cell car, due out next year. JUNG YEON-JE/AFP/Getty Images Hyundai Motor announced last week that it will try to reclaim its early leadership in hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by releasing a new fuel-cell SUV next year with an industry-best range of 500 miles. Corporate cousin Kia will produce its own fuel-cell vehicle by 2020, the Korean automaker said. The new hydrogen car is part of Hyundai’s plans to put 14 more eco-friendly vehicles on the road by 2020. The question now is: Can any automaker get consumers to care about fuel-cell cars? Hyundai began its fuel-cell program in 1999 and stuck with it as other automakers waned or dropped out and was the first to start assembly-line production of a fuel-cell vehicle – the Tucson Fuel Cell – in 2013. But a lack of hydrogen fueling stations – … [Read more...] about It’s A Gas: Hyundai Hopes To Regain Hydrogen Leadership With Futuristic New SUV
Toyota Adapting Its Hydrogen Car Technology To Power Exhaust-Free Heavy Trucks
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and even appears first on the Periodic Table . But as a vehicle fuel, it’s pretty scarce. No automaker has worked harder than Toyota to change that, promoting it as the emission-free fuel of the future with its Mirai sedan that’s sold in Japan and in some U.S. markets. Now the world’s largest automaker is planning to scale the fuel-cell technology used in its mid-size Mirai to power heavy commercial trucks. Will Receptor Decoys Both Prevent And Treat SARS-CoV-2 Infection?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A new ACE2 decoy mechanism efficiently neutralizes a variety of Covid-19 variants, including Omicron strains. With the continuous evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus over the last three years, the pathogen has become more efficient at infecting our cells and evading our immune defenses. One crucial aspect of this efficiency is affinity to the ACE2 receptor, a major selection criterion in virus evolution. The ACE2 decoy mimics the host cell ACE2, similarly engaging the virus and inhibiting viral entry to a real cell. Using receptors as decoys is not a novel concept. In connection to SARS-CoV-2, ACE2 decoys were tested against closely related viruses, SARS-1 and HIV, in recent decades. The decoy did not come to fruition against these viruses for myriad reasons. For SARS-1, the strategy showed some signs of reduced symptoms in mouse models, but the outbreak calmed before further animal and human testing could continue. For HIV, … [Read more...] about Will Receptor Decoys Both Prevent And Treat SARS-CoV-2 Infection?
World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
Dr Sewanti Limaye, Director, Precision Oncology, HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre. Cancer is among the most researched diseases in the world. For most cancers, early detection is rare, and there isn’t enough consensus among oncologists, researchers and practitioners of non-Western medicine on its exact causes. Overall, a few broad causes have been conclusively established: Cancer may arise as a consequence of genomic abnormalities such as mutations, or when the body’s immune system weakens or collapses, or due to external assaults to the body such as tobacco use, exposure to chemicals and radiation and certain infections. But much like the human body, much of this disease is a mystery. There is no one cause and there is no one cure. As Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee has written in his cancer magnum opus The Emperor of All Maladies , “That this seemingly simple mechanism—cell growth without barriers—can lie at the heart of this … [Read more...] about World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
Does ChatGPT mean the end of ‘thought leaders’?
