Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline New York state and city officials filed lawsuits Wednesday going after gun distributors who sell “ghost guns” that can escape firearm restrictions and be harder to trace, as the state tries to crack down on gun violence and do more to limit firearms after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York’s concealed carry law. Key Facts New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York City Mayor Eric Adams filed lawsuits in state and federal courts, respectively, against multiple national gun distributors that have been linked to “ ghost guns ,” firearms that are privately assembled and don’t have serial numbers, meaning they can’t be tracked and aren’t subject to background checks on purchases or other restrictions. The lawsuits allege the distributors have sent “unfinished” firearm frames and receivers to people in New York who then use those parts to assemble working guns—without including serial … [Read more...] about New York City And State Sue ‘Ghost Gun’ Distributors — Hit Back After Supreme Court Knocks Down Gun Law

ESG fund launches in doubt as anti-greenwash rules hit industry
Bloomberg filepix for illustration purpose only - A + A COPENHAGEN (June 30): Investment managers are likely to hold back from introducing more ESG funds, as they try to gauge the risks posed by the new regulatory environment, according to Europe’s biggest fund association. “I sense that we will observe a pause in the launch or repurposing of funds, pending further regulatory developments,” Marc-Andre Bechet, deputy director of the Association of the Luxembourg Fund Industry, told Bloomberg . That’s despite “pressure from distributors and intermediaries” to provide more sustainable products, he said. The assessment follows a shift in the regulatory landscape around environmental, social and governance investing since the police raid on the offices of Deutsche Bank AG and its fund unit DWS Group in late May. Despite the absence of clear rules, lawyers advising ESG fund managers have warned that regulators seem to be preparing for a wider crackdown. A slowdown … [Read more...] about ESG fund launches in doubt as anti-greenwash rules hit industry
US Supreme Court nixes religious challenge to New York vaccine mandate
- A + A WASHINGTON (June 30): The US Supreme Court on Thursday declined to hear a challenge to New York's mandate that healthcare sector workers be vaccinated against Covid-19 brought by a group of doctors, nurses and others who objected on religious grounds. Turning away an appeal by 16 healthcare workers, the justices left in place a lower court ruling that rejected their claim that the mandate violates the US Constitution's First Amendment prohibition against religious discrimination by the government. Most of the workers either resigned from their jobs, lost hospital admitting privileges or were fired for refusing the vaccine. Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, dissented from the decision to deny the appeal. The Supreme Court previously rejected other challenges to vaccine mandates including one focusing upon Maine's lack of a religious exemption for healthcare workers. New York's Department of Health last Aug 26 ordered … [Read more...] about US Supreme Court nixes religious challenge to New York vaccine mandate
Jet Airways likely to sign deal for new planes in next couple of weeks: Sources
Representative image. Jet Airways is in the process of finalising a new deal for its fleet and is expected to sign the deal in the next couple of weeks, multiple sources aware of the matter told Moneycontrol . “The timeline for delivery of planes is being finalised as the airline is very keen to start increasing its operations once it takes flight. Once the timelines are finalised, the deal will be signed and announced,” a senior company official said. He added that at the moment Jet Airways has not made a final decision on the type of aircraft it wants to procure and the contract is mostly going to depend on the manufacturer’s ability to deliver planes in a timely manner. “Jet Airways wants to start taking delivery of new planes by the end of 2023 or even before that and will look to take delivery of around 20 planes every year for the next four years,” an industry insider aware of the discussions said. On June 27, Bloomberg reported that the once-defunct Indian … [Read more...] about Jet Airways likely to sign deal for new planes in next couple of weeks: Sources
Supreme Court Curbs EPA’s Power To Regulate Emissions And Fight Climate Change
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Supreme Court has made it more challenging for the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gases and fight climate change, as justices ruled Thursday in favor of Republican-led states and coal companies that asked the court to limit how much the EPA can control emissions from power plants. Key Facts The court ruled 6-3 along ideological lines that the EPA does not have the authority under the Clean Air Act to create caps for greenhouse gas emissions and create “generation shifting” requirements (the method by which power plants can reduce emissions). GOP-led states and coal companies had sued the Biden administration to limit how much the EPA can regulate emissions from power plants, even though the administration hasn’t actually come up with a rule for those emissions yet. The challengers wanted the Supreme Court to preemptively decide how far the Biden administration can go … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Curbs EPA’s Power To Regulate Emissions And Fight Climate Change
Supreme Court Delivers Massive Blow To Biden’s Climate Agenda
The Supreme Court dealt a critical blow to the Biden administration’s wide-ranging climate goals Thursday, limiting the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. “Congress did not grant EPA in Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act the authority to devise emissions caps based on the generation shifting approach the Agency took in the Clean Power Plan,” Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion. The case was centered around a 2015 Obama-era EPA climate rule known as the Clean Air Act, which sought to cut carbon emissions from power plants by 32% by 2030. The Supreme Court delivered a massive blow to the Biden administration’s climate change plan Thursday, severely limiting the power of federal agencies. The Court, in a 6-3 decision on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), limited the agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases from power plants, significantly curtailing the power of … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Delivers Massive Blow To Biden’s Climate Agenda
Nearly 200 nations near a deal to slow global warming
French President Francois Hollande, left, French foreign minister Laurent Fabius, center, and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon applaud at the COP21, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Le Bourget, north of Paris, Saturday, Dec.12, 2015. Fabius says a “final” draft of a global climate pact would be legally binding. AP LE BOURGET, France— France presented negotiators from nearly 200 nations with what it called a “final draft” of an unprecedented climate deal to slow global warming and urged them to approve it on Saturday. The deal would slow rising temperatures and sea levels, and eventually hold man-made emissions to the levels that nature can absorb. If the pact known as “the Paris agreement” is approved, countries would be committed to keeping the rise in global temperatures by the year 2100 compared with pre-industrial times “well below” 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and “endeavor to limit” them even more, to 1.5 degrees Celsius. That was a … [Read more...] about Nearly 200 nations near a deal to slow global warming
