Wall St ends sharply lower as Powell warns inflation fight continues
Traders react as a screen displays the Fed rate announcement on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., March 22, 2023. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid NEW YORK – Wall Street gyrated to end sharply lower on Wednesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve delivered a widely expected 25 basis point policy hike, while hinting that it was on the verge of pa us ing future increases in view of recent turmoil in the financial sector. The three major U.S. stock indexes, which were mostly directionless prior to the Fed announcement, jumped higher then deflated as investors digested the accompanying statement and Chair Jerome Powell’s subsequent Q&A session. By closing bell, all three indexes were off more than 1.6 percent. “The market was encouraged when it heard that the Fed had considered pa us ing completely and then it was disappointed when Powell clarified that their hands weren’t tied and that they can keep raising rates if they need to,” said Chris … [Read more...] about Wall St ends sharply lower as Powell warns inflation fight continues

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Contributing authors: Marilyn Chinitz and Morgan Fraser Mouchette When it comes time to divvy up assets in divorce, many couples focus on the major markers of their shared wealth like real estate, business interests, savings, and personal property. But plenty of other valuable belongings accumulate during a marriage and have to be accounted for. From our extensive experience advising high-net-worth and celebrity couples in divorce and marital agreements (pre-nuptial and post-nuptial), we can honestly say that all relationships can benefit from carefully cataloging assets in the marital estate, especially those that are held in unconventional ways. Recent publicity around certain celebrity divorces has shed some light on how to approach an equitable (or at least agreed-upon) division of the assets that aren’t necessarily top of mind, offering an instructive roadmap that all couples can benefit from. Here are some … [Read more...] about What Kim Kardashian, Brad Pitt, And Cheryl Burke Can Teach Us About Dividing Unconventional Assets Throughout A Divorce
Number of newborns in Korea hits record low for January
A father meets his twin babies through a video call. [YONHAP] The number of newborn babies has hit another rock bottom. The dire demographic news comes just a few days ahead of a presidential committee meeting to draw up plans for combating the falling birth rate. There were 23,179 new babies born in January, a 6 percent decrease on year, according to a report released by Statistics Korea on Wednesday. This was the fewest babies born in the month of January since the agency began data compilation in 1981, and half of the 46,747 babies born in January 2008. The on-year decrease in the number of newborn babies has been going on for 86 months. Crude birth rate, or the number of babies born per 1,000 people, dropped to 5.3 from 5.7 in January last year. “Fewer babies were born because there were fewer marriages during the first half last year,” said Lim Young-il, director of the population census division at Statistics Korea, adding that the number of new babies and marriages … [Read more...] about Number of newborns in Korea hits record low for January
