Many cities, in recent years, have initiated tree-planting campaigns to offset carbon dioxide emissions and improve urban microclimates. In 2007, New York City launched MillionTrees NYC, a program designed to plant 1 million new trees along streets, in parks, and on private and public properties by 2017. They hit their goal two years ahead of time. These programs are popular for a reason: Not only do trees improve the city’s appearance, but they also mitigate the urban heat island effect–the tendency for dense cities to be hotter than surrounding areas. Studies have shown that trees reduce pollutants in the air, and even the mere sight of trees and the availability of green spaces in cities can decrease stress. But as I show in my new book, Seeing Trees: A History of Street Trees in New York City and Berlin, trees weren’t always a part of the urban landscape. It took a systematic, coordinated effort to get the first ones planted. A landscape that was hot, … [Read more...] about How a 19th-century doctor saved New York–by planting trees

New year, new Twin Cities-area restaurants coming
For the past few years, the restaurant scene in St. Paul has been absolutely booming. This year, it appears to be going a little slower, but there are still a whole lot of projects we’re excited about, in both major cities and in the east-metro suburbs. Here’s what we know is coming in 2019. JANUARY LOLITO LoLo American Kitchen and Craft Bar owners Brad Nordeen and Joe Ehlenz are busy changing over the former Pearl and the Thief space two blocks away from LoLo in downtown Stillwater. Here’s How To Escape New York City During A Doomsday Scenario
As the head of the NYC Preppers Network, New York City firefighter Jason Charles spends his spare time thinking about what would happen in the event of a catastrophe, planning for everything from the weather-related, like a hurricane, to the more sinister, like a mass chemical attack. It isn’t necessarily fun, but Charles believes it’s incredibly important to prepare for every contingency possible. This is the type of “game” that all preppers, a subculture made famous by National Geographic’s TV show Doomsday Preppers, take part in. A game of chess, says Charles, where winning or losing means life or death. Unlike other preppers, many of whom live in less populated areas, Charles has to contend with one major obstacle to surviving any apocalypse: living on the island of Manhattan. “The biggest problem is getting off this rock,” Charles told Business Insider from his Harlem apartment. “People in a town or a landlocked city can just walk … [Read more...] about Here’s How To Escape New York City During A Doomsday Scenario
