Reports that Amazon is launching its own line of grocery stores raised eyebrows about how their debut could ricochet through America’s trillion-dollar grocery industry. Amazon owns Whole Foods, but that business revolves around higher-priced natural and organic groceries. Now as its rivals amp up their own grocery delivery and pickup services, experts say Amazon could be forging a path to lock into another part of customers’ shopping habits — and convert those people to Prime members along the way. On Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon plans to open its first grocery store in Los Angeles, possibly by year’s end. The Journal reported that Amazon had signed leases for at least two other grocery locations that could open early next year. Discount signs adorn the window of a clothing store Monday as last-minute shoppers finished up their Christmas lists at a mall in Denver. It's too soon to know the full picture about holiday retail sales through the end of the year. But a wave of post-Christmas data puts the industry on track to meet record-breaking expectations. On Wednesday, MasterCard SpendingPulse -- which tracks retail spending trends -- said Christmas sales had seen the strongest growth in the past six years, surging 5.1 percent to more than $850 billion. Meanwhile, Amazon touted strong sales on millions of Amazon devices, and broad use of the company's free holiday shipping perks. "In sales terms, this has definitely been a very strong holiday -- one of the best since 1999," said Neil Saunders, managing director of research firm GlobalData Retail. That’s according to new research by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners suggesting that in the past year, Prime memberships grew 8 percent – the lowest annual rate since the group began tracking the data in 2012. The group also put the number of U.S. Prime members – a stat Amazon has famously kept under wraps – at 97 million, with Prime shoppers spending an average of roughly $1,400 per year, compared to $600 per year for non-member shoppers. Amazon is reportedly in the running to purchase Landmark Theatres, a small chain of movie theatres that primarily show independent and foreign films, Bloomberg reported Thursday. Owning Landmark would give Amazon another physical space to connect with customers, according to GBH Insights’ Daniel Ives. A purchase could be another sign that Amazon is looking outside its traditional growth area – customers’ homes – to grow sales and Prime memberships. Amazon might be looking to make a mark at the movies. The retailer, known for its vast product selection and fast, free shipping, is reportedly looking to purchase Landmark Theatres, according to a Bloomberg report from Thursday.
