WASHINGTON — Ruth Bader Ginsburg was in her usual spot on the U.S. Supreme Court bench Tuesday, returning to the courtroom for the first time since undergoing cancer surgery in December. She walked with her colleagues through the velvet curtains behind the bench promptly at 10 a.m., looking as fit as she did before the surgery. And, as is often her custom, she asked the first question during Tuesday's argument in a patent case. Doctors removed a portion of one of her lungs just before the holidays after finding three cancerous lumps. As she recovered at home, she participated in the consideration and decision of the eleven cases argued in January, by reading the legal briefs and oral argument transcripts. In mid-January, the Supreme Court's spokeswoman, Kathy Arberg, said an evaluation by doctors after the surgery found "no evidence of remaining disease, and no further treatment is required." Ginsburg turns 86 on March 15. She has said she will remain on the court as long as her … [Read more...] about Justice Ginsburg returns to the Supreme Court after surgery

Justice Ginsburg misses Supreme Court oral argument for first time
WASHINGTON — Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was not at the Supreme Court on Monday, missing a courtroom argument for the first time since she became a justice 25 years ago. Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Ginsburg, who is 85, was working from home while recuperating from surgery. Doctors removed a portion of her lung on December 21 after cancerous nodules were detected, and she was released from the New York hospital four days later. Ginsburg will participate in deciding the cases argued Monday by reading the legal briefs and a transcript of the oral argument, Arberg said. There was no word on when she would be back on the bench. She has made a point of returning to the court promptly after two earlier surgical procedures for cancer in 1999 and 2009, and she was undoubtedly aware of the potent symbolism of those appearances. The cancerous spots on her lungs were detected when she sought treatment on November 7 for three ribs that were fractured when she fell in her court … [Read more...] about Justice Ginsburg misses Supreme Court oral argument for first time

If Bill Clinton had never been president, Democrats would be better off today
Visit The Boston Globe Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Comment on this Scroll to top of page Neil Swidey July 10, 2018 AS FLEETWOOD MAC took the stage in January 1993, awkwardness hung in the air. It was, after all, the full band’s first performance since an acrimonious breakup many years earlier. When the familiar chords of “Don’t Stop” filled the stadium, Lindsey Buckingham managed to ape his acrobatic guitar playing from the ’70s. His voice, however, refused to come out of early retirement. Stevie Nicks wore an unfortunate Mad Hatter cap and a confused, bug-eyed expression that hinted at some kind of hostage situation.Yet as soon as a band member called out, “Sir, would you join us, please?” everything began to feel right. The youthful president-elect, Bill Clinton, looking dashing in his tux, glided onto the stage for a gala on the eve of his inauguration, joined by his wife and daughter, and then Al and Tipper Gore. … [Read more...] about If Bill Clinton had never been president, Democrats would be better off today
