Design used to be simple. Create the most beautiful objects and experiences you can to solve problems big and small. Today, it’s complicated. Any new design must be weighed against its impact on the environment and human equity as much as its own purpose or practicality. AUSTRIA – Austrian Police have made a grisly discovery of dozens of migrants found dead in the 7.5-tonne lorry stopped on the A4 motorway near the town of Parndorf, apparently since Wednesday, Hans Peter Doskozil, police chief in the province of Burgenland, told a news conference. He said he could not put an exact figure on the number of victims, whose bodies had begun to decompose. “We can assume that it could be 20 people who died. It could also be 40, it could be 50 people,” he said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the discovery had shaken European leaders attending a Balkans summit. It may have started with a dress code. advertisement advertisement When tech entrepreneur and investor Tom Chavez was a senior at Albuquerque Academy in the 1980s, he bristled at the private school’s clothing rules—no jeans, collared shirts—a holdover from the school’s roots as an elite boys’ prep school. “I thought it created an income-sorting, elitist atmosphere,” he recalls. So Chavez, a straight-A student who attended the school on a partial scholarship, successfully lobbied to get administrators to allow jeans and tamp down on flashy designer logos. “I remember being in college, thinking, ‘Way to go, Tom. I wish I could do that,'” says Chavez’s older brother, Marty, former CFO of Goldman Sachs and vice chairman at money management firm Sixth Street Partners. “I don’t have that direct rebellion in me.” call for regulation of Big Tech while funding and incubating businesses that serve as antidotes to what he sees as some of the sector’s ills. … [Read more...] about ‘I’m getting invited to fewer parties,’ says a tech insider turned critic
Hundreds of testimonies have recently been appearing on social networks denouncing cases of GHB intoxication and sexual assaults in bars and nightclubs all over Europe. In the UK, a startup has created a new app to help stop this disturbing phenomenon. The Where You At startup has designed an app with the ambition of helping women feel safer when they go out to a nightclub. It allows clubbers to stay in touch with their friends at any time during their night out, even if they have no network inside a bar or a nightclub. The app relies on accurate “micro-location” and Bluetooth mesh networking to allow any user to share their exact location in often dark and crowded spaces. An offline messaging service and SOS functionality are also built into the app to provide an added layer of security for night owls. According to trade publication MusicAlly , this information could be shared with the police if a woman is sexually assaulted or drugged without her knowledge. A long-ignored … [Read more...] about This app was designed to help keep women safe when out at night

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Great Resignation has left millions of positions unfilled, as US workers continue to leave jobs in record numbers. Where is the change management that will turn the tide ? Employers are hungry for new ideas to help keep workers engaged, while reducing turnover. Despite current change management efforts, 55% of workers plan to seek new opportunities (according to Bankrate.com ). Job security and better pay are top concerns for employees. But those concerns are topped by family matters. So, evidently change management isn’t managing what matters. And that’s why workers are going to continue to make decisions that change the status quo. Americans are prioritizing flexible work arrangements (56 percent) and greater job security (47 percent), according to that Bankrate survey. Employers struggle to find the change management magic that can deliver on those concerns. Indeed, it is a delicate balance between what companies … [Read more...] about Why Change Management Doesn’t Work: Millions Are Still Leaving The Workforce—Should You?
by Anthony Lark “Let’s say goodbye to all that stale pretence and manufactured pomp” Until the collective nightmare that was 2020, many of the so-called high-end hotels had a reputation for trying to convince guests to pay for often dingy guestrooms lacking any real views inside an otherwise ornate structure with a storied, celebrated past, where the first impression was a check in often akin to applying for a bank loan. Defined as “luxury”, in the good old days they got away with it. Over the thirty years I spent running Amanpuri and Trisara on Phuket, I heard hundreds of people complain of feeling ripped off at “legendary” and “iconic” hotels by staff that rudely treated them as anything but guests. How many of us did not tip the head waiter after dinner on the first night, to return the next evening and find ourselves stashed at a table by the kitchen door, or getting ushered past the prime and utterly empty deck chairs (with a book on them) by an indifferent pool boy … [Read more...] about What has the pandemic taught hotels about luxury. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The educational system in the United States is flawed. And any college graduate (or parent of a college graduate) has felt the pain of working with Career Services, in preparation for entering the workforce. While universities are busy developing critical thinking skills, practical thinking skills are rare. Coaching, mentoring and leadership programs are filling in the gaps—but preparing for the future of work means understanding what’s missing in our current educational system. In a Forbes article entitled The Mindblowing Hypocrisy of Elite College Admissions, Ryan Craig points out the do-or-die mentality of parents who will risk everything to find a top college for their kids. Beyond the sacrifices that make headlines, are students really prepared for what’s next? Welcome to the real world, she said to me, condescendingly... First, a bit of context for where we are today. Based on the Prussian system of … [Read more...] about Why Coaching Is Vital For Young Leaders
